Maya's life as Luna was everything she never knew she wanted.
She spent her days training with Kai, learning about pack politics, and building relationships with the pack members. She was determined to be a good Luna, one that the pack could be proud of.
But not everyone accepted her.
Elena continued to watch her with cold, calculating eyes. She made snide remarks whenever Kai wasn't around, and she made sure Maya knew that she was still a rival for Kai's attention.
"You're not good enough for him," Elena said one afternoon, cornering Maya in the training yard. "He deserves a real wolf. Not a human who doesn't even know how to shift properly."
Maya stood her ground. "Kai chose me. The moon chose me. You can't change that."
Elena smirked. "We'll see about that. The Shadow Pack is getting stronger. And when they attack, you'll be the first one to fall. I hope you're ready, little Luna."
Maya was about to respond when a loud howl echoed through the trees. Both women froze.
"What was that?" Maya whispered.
Elena's face went pale. "That's... the Shadow Pack."
Maya's blood ran cold. "They're attacking?"
"Looks like it," Elena said. "Stay here and try not to get killed."
Elena shifted and ran off, leaving Maya alone.
But Maya didn't stay.
She ran toward the pack house, where the battle was already raging. Wolves were everywhere, fighting, snarling, and biting. She searched the chaos for Kai and finally saw him in the center of the chaos, fighting three wolves at once.
He was magnificent.
And he was outnumbered.
Without thinking, Maya shifted into her wolf form and leaped into the fight. She slammed into one of the wolves, knocking him away from Kai.
"Maya!" Kai shouted. "I told you to stay inside!"
"I'm not letting you fight alone!" she said, her voice fierce even in her wolf form.
Together, they fought side by side, their movements perfectly synchronized. Maya's wolf was strong and fierce, and she found a rhythm she had never known before.
The battle was brutal, but the Silvermoon Pack was stronger. One by one, the Shadow Pack retreated, their tails between their legs.
When it was over, Maya collapsed, exhausted, but alive. Kai was at her side in an instant.
"You were amazing," he said. "You're a true warrior."
Maya smiled weakly. "I told you. I'm not running anymore."
