Chapter 2: The Denial

488 Words
Maya spent the next three days in denial. She refused to accept that she was a werewolf. She refused to accept that Kai was her mate. She refused to accept any of it. She told herself it was all a dream—a strange, impossible dream that she would wake up from at any moment. But she didn't wake up. Every morning, she opened her eyes to the same unfamiliar room. Every morning, she felt the same strange energy pulsing through her veins. And every morning, she felt the pull, the invisible thread that connected her to Kai. It was maddening. On the fourth day, she decided to leave. She packed her small bag and walked out of the room, determined to find her way back to her old life. But as she walked down the hallway, she heard voices coming from the main hall. "Alpha, the Shadow Pack is getting bolder," a deep voice said. "They've been crossing into our territory. They're testing our borders." Maya froze. She peeked through the doorway and saw Kai standing with a group of men. They were all tall, muscular, and exuded an aura of power. Kai stood at the center, his silver eyes sharp and commanding. "They want a war," Kai said, his voice cold. "And I'll give them one. But not until we're ready. I won't risk the safety of this pack." Maya's heart pounded. War? This was real. This was dangerous. She needed to get out of there. She turned to run, but a voice stopped her. "Leaving so soon?" She spun around. Kai was standing behind her, a knowing smile on his face. He had moved so quietly, so quickly, that she hadn't even heard him approach. "I'm going home," she said firmly. "I don't belong here." "You do belong here," Kai said, stepping closer. "You're my mate. You're part of this pack. Whether you accept it or not." "I don't want to be your mate!" she shouted. "I didn't ask for this! I want to go back to my life, my normal, human life." Kai's expression softened. "I know this is hard, Maya. I know you're scared. But I can't let you go. Not only because you're my mate, but because you're in danger." "What are you talking about?" "The Shadow Pack," he explained. "They've been watching you. They know you're my mate. And they will try to use you to get to me. If you leave, you'll be walking straight into their hands." Maya felt a chill run down her spine. "You're lying." "I never lie," he said, his silver eyes locked on hers. "I will never lie to you, Maya. I promise you that." She stared at him, searching for any sign of deception. But she found none. "Fine," she said quietly. "I'll stay. For now. But this doesn't mean I accept you as my mate." Kai smiled. "I'll take what I can get."
