Maya had always felt different.
She never knew why. She just knew that something inside her was waiting. Something restless. Something wild.
On the night of her 21st birthday, she found out what it was.
She was at a party with her friends, laughing and dancing, when the first wave of pain hit her. It started in her chest, a burning, searing heat that spread through her entire body. She stumbled, clutching her heart, and her friends rushed to her side.
"Maya? Are you okay?" her best friend Sarah asked, her voice filled with concern.
But Maya couldn't answer. The pain was too intense. Her vision blurred, and she felt like her body was tearing apart from the inside. She collapsed to her knees, gasping for air.
And then she heard it.
A voice. Deep and commanding. It echoed in her mind, resonating in her very soul.
"Maya. You are not human. You are a wolf. And I am your Alpha."
She looked up, her eyes wide with shock, and saw a man standing at the edge of the crowd. He was tall, with dark hair and piercing silver eyes. He was watching her with an intensity that made her heart race.
"Who are you?" she whispered.
His lips curved into a small, knowing smile. "I am Kai. And you, Maya, are my fated mate."
The world went black.
When Maya woke up, she was in an unfamiliar room. The bed was soft, the sheets were silk, and the walls were covered in elegant paintings. She sat up, confused and disoriented.
A voice came from the doorway. "You're awake."
She turned and saw him. The man from the party. He was leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his broad chest. He was even more handsome up close, strong jaw, sharp cheekbones, eyes that seemed to see right through her.
"Where am I?" she demanded.
"My home," he said calmly. "You collapsed. I brought you here to recover."
"I don't even know you!" she said, scrambling out of bed. "Who are you? What did you do to me?"
Kai stepped closer, his silver eyes fixed on hers. "I didn't do anything to you, Maya. What happened tonight was inevitable. You are a werewolf. And I am your Alpha. You are my fated mate."
Maya stared at him, her heart pounding. "That's impossible. I'm human. I've always been human."
"You were human," he corrected gently. "Until tonight. Your wolf has awakened. There's no going back."
Maya shook her head, backing away. "I don't want this. I don't want any of this. I just want to go home and pretend none of this ever happened."
Kai's expression softened. "I understand you're scared. But running away won't change who you are. You're part of my pack now. And I will protect you with my life."
Maya looked into his eyes and saw something she didn't expect. Sincerity. Loyalty. And something deeper, a connection that pulled at her heart, even though she didn't want to admit it.
"I need time," she said finally.
"Take all the time you need," Kai said. "I'll be here when you're ready."
