The next morning, Kai woke Maya before sunrise.
"Get up," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "It's time to train."
Maya groaned, pulling the blanket over her head. "It's too early."
"You're a wolf now," Kai said, pulling the blanket away. "Wolves don't sleep in."
Maya glared at him. "I hate you."
"No, you don't," he said with a smirk. "Now get up."
She dragged herself out of bed and followed him to a clearing in the woods. The air was cool and crisp, and the first rays of sunlight were just beginning to peek over the horizon.
"This is where I train," Kai said. "And now, this is where you'll train."
Maya looked around nervously. "I don't know how to fight."
"Then I'll teach you," he said simply.
He started with the basics, stances, punches, and dodges. Maya struggled at first. Her movements were clumsy and uncoordinated. But slowly, something began to shift.
She felt her wolf stirring inside her, guiding her movements. Her reflexes sharpened. Her speed increased. She started to anticipate Kai's moves before he made them.
"Good," Kai said, a hint of pride in his voice. "You're a natural."
"I don't feel like a natural," Maya muttered, panting.
"Your wolf is learning," he said. "And so are you."
He stepped closer, his silver eyes intense. "Now let's try something different. I want you to tap into your wolf. Let her take over."
"What do you mean?"
"Close your eyes," he instructed. "Feel her. The warmth in your chest. The fire in your veins. She's there, Maya. Let her come forward."
Maya closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She felt the warmth he was talking about, a fire that burned deep inside her. She reached for it, felt it pulse and grow.
When she opened her eyes, something was different. Everything was sharper. The colors were brighter, the sounds were clearer, and Kai's scent hit her like a wave—pine and forest and something that was uniquely him.
"There you are," he said softly.
She lunged at him before she knew what she was doing. Her body moved faster than her mind, and she tackled him to the ground. They rolled through the grass, and Maya found herself on top of him, her heart racing.
"Good," Kai breathed, a smile playing on his lips. "But next time, try not to lose control."
"What" Maya started, but then she realized what she had done. She scrambled off him, her cheeks burning. "I didn't mean to"
"It's fine," Kai said, rising to his feet and brushing off his clothes. "It just means your wolf is strong."
"I can't control her," Maya admitted. "She just takes over."
"You'll learn," he promised. "I'll teach you."
