A week passed, and Maya's training continued.
She was getting stronger. Faster. More in control of her wolf. She could shift at will now, though she still struggled to maintain control when her emotions ran high.
Kai was patient. He never pushed her too hard, but he also never let her give up. He was always there, guiding her, encouraging her.
And slowly, Maya began to see him differently.
He wasn't just her Alpha. He wasn't just her mate. He was kind, protective, and surprisingly gentle. He always made sure she was safe, always checked on her, always put her needs first.
She was starting to fall for him.
But she was still too stubborn to admit it.
One evening, Maya woke to the sound of shouting. She sat up in bed, her heart racing, and ran to the window.
What she saw made her blood run cold.
A group of wolves was attacking the pack house, savage, snarling, and relentless.
Maya ran out of her room and found Kai in the hallway. His silver eyes were glowing, and his body was tense.
"Stay inside," he ordered.
"No," she said firmly. "I'm not hiding."
Kai looked at her, and something shifted in his gaze. "You're not ready."
"I don't care," she said. "I can fight. Let me help."
He hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Stay behind me. And if I tell you to run, you run. Understood?"
She nodded. "Understood."
They ran outside together, joining the battle. Maya shifted into her wolf form and attacked one of the intruders, biting deep into his leg. He yelped and retreated, but another wolf lunged at her,
Kai intercepted him, slamming into the wolf with a force that sent him flying.
"Don't touch her," he snarled, his voice filled with fury.
The battle raged on, but slowly, the Silvermoon Pack gained the upper hand. The invaders retreated, vanishing into the darkness.
Maya shifted back and collapsed to her knees, exhausted. Kai was at her side in an instant.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
"I'm fine," she gasped. "We won."
Kai pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "You were incredible," he murmured. "But if you ever scare me like that again..."
"You were scared for me?" she asked softly.
He pulled back and looked into her eyes. "I'm always scared for you," he admitted. "Because I can't lose you, Maya. I can't."
Her heart pounded. And before she could stop herself, she leaned in and kissed him.
