Cold Slaughter
Allison's Pov
"Wait!"
A voice tore through the silent crowd like a razor. I tilted my head to the back as I watched my best friend, Katherine stepped forward from the crowd.
"She doesn't have a scent because she's not one of us, Damian. She's an enemy."
"Woah!"
The crowd gasped, whispers erupted from everyone. Katherine looked at me, her eyes gleaming with a malicious triumph. She pointed a trembling finger to me. I stood confused, at the sudden allegation my best friend had made.
"Check the records of the great purge eighteen years ago," Katherine shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Check the faces of the Quick Silver hunters who slaughtered our kind. You will see a woman that looks exactly like our dear Allison. That is Allison real mother! Her beta father, betrayed our kind and mated with a werewolf huntress!
The gasp from the crowd was a collective roar of fury.
My world tilted. I turned, my eyes wide and searching until they landed on my father. Silas, the Beta of the Alpha king, he had never in his life told me about this. He kept telling me one day, I would shift, I was special.
"Dad?" I whispered, my voice cracking. I bolted towards him, grabbing his heavy cloak. "Dad, tell me it's not true. Tell her she's lying. Tell me...!"
My dad didn't answer. He didn't even look at me. His head dropped, his shoulders sagging under the weight of a secret he had carried for two decades. I tilted my head toward my mum. Not my mum anymore, but my step mum. She kept quiet. Her head cowered down. That proved only one thing. She knew. She had known about the secret to my birth all this time.
"Tell me!" I screamed, shaking him.
But it was the high Alpha Thorne who spoke, his voice a low terrifying rumble. "The silence of a Beta is a confession, Silas. You brought a slayer into our own world. You betrayed our entire race by sleeping with a hunter. How dare you try to give a huntress to my son as Luna?!
In an instant, the ceremonial guards, I had watched protect me all my life half shifted into their wolf form. They surrounded my mother, brother and sister in a circle.
"Alpha, please!" My dad dropped to his knees, his forehead hitting the stone. "It was a mistake! Please spare my family! I thought she would have my wolf blood in her. If we give her few more years she would shift.
"A traitor's seed is a traitor's crop," Thorne spat. "And a beta who lies is no Beta at all. You are stripped of your rank. Your bloodline ends tonight."
I turned to Damian, screaming at the top of my lungs. I was so sure he was my mate. We spent years planning our future, he had told me he could smell my scent before.
"Damian," I sobbed, lunging for him. "Please tell them you can smell me. Remember you told me that's, how you knew I was your mate. Please say something. Tell them!"
I reached for his hand, but he didn't take it. Instead, he planted his palm against my shoulder and shoved me. He didn't use human strength, he used the crushing force of a future Alpha.
I hit the stone floor hard, the air leaving my lungs in a pained wheeze.
"You aren't my mate. I never told you anything about your scent," Damian said, his brown eyes burning with a disgust that withered my soul. "You're a mistake. I am glad the moon corrected. You belong in the dirt with the rest of the human filth. You deserve to die, with rest of your family!"
He didn't even wait for me to stand. He turned his back on me and reached for Katherine.
"The moon has revealed the rot," Damian announced to the hall. "I claim Katherine as my Luna. The true blood. The loyal blood."
I watched, paralyzed as Damian pulled Katherine into his arms. Right there, over the sound of my father's desperate pleas, Damian pressed his lips to Katherine in a deep possessive kiss.
"Kill them," the High Alpha commanded.
In one swing, my siblings throats were slashed with claws. They fell flat on the floor, blood gushing out of their necks in a horrifying speed, tainting the scared hard floor.
"No!" my dad cried out, lunging for their bodies. I stood frozen in terror, looking at the lifeless bodies of my elder brother, Caleb and my sister, Elena. She lay on the floor, her eyes wide opened in terror as life drifted from her slowly.
My parents were seized and pinned down to the floor. I tried to lunge at the guard but before my weakly muscles would react, I was thrown to the wall just with one shove. I saw stars instantly, my vision began to blur as I watched my father fighting like a demon, but he was outnumbered.
"Run, Allison!" my mother's voice yelled to me, as a guard thrusted his claws to her stomach, her mouth bubbled with blood, her eyes frozen as she stared at me one last time. Within seconds she fell with a light thud on the floor.
"Sarah!" My father lunge to her, but the Alpha king was too fast. With his two hands he dug his claws in my father's chest.
My father tilted his head toward me, hot tears streamed down his eyes, I didn't know what it was but his eyes screamed to me, "I am so sorry!" I was sure that was the exact words he wanted to say to me.
My father's knees dropped on the floor, one and then the other.
"Allison, just go!" his voice echoed, I scrambled up from my feet, the guards already heading toward me. I took one last glance at Damian who was chattering with Sharon. In this intense moment, the both of them had the audacity to laugh.
I ran as fast as my human feeble leg could carry me. I didn't look back. I kept running. I ran past the ritual fires, past the rows of chanting wolves, and dove through the glass window of the great hall. The glass shattered, cutting my skin into a thousand maps of fire, but I didn't stop.
Behind me, the howling began. The sound of a hunt. I hit the grass and kept running. It was a full moon night, the forest a wall of suffocating black.
Behind me, the heavy thud of paws hit the bare earth. They weren't just chasing me, they were playing with me. They wanted to feel the terror before the kill.
"There she is! Don't let the traitor's brat reach the border! a guard howled.
"She is bloody human! How is she running so fast?! the voice of another roared behind me.
My lungs burned. My heart was drumming against my ribs. I burst through the tree line, my feet hitting the cold, hard asphalt of the mountain highway.
I stumbled, my vision blurred by tears and blood. The woods behind me erupted with the glowing eyes of wolves. They skidded to a halt at the edge of the road, snapping their jaws, I didn't know why, but they suddenly stopped, maybe anyone up there who was protecting me just wanted me alive.
I looked back, my breath coming in jagged gasps. Just as I turned to run across the dark road, my world was swallowed by light.
Boom!
I saw myself fly high in the air, as I fell with a heavy thud, on the hard mettalic iron. My vision was failing, the world turning into a blurry mosaic of black and white. Through the ringing in my ears, I heard the distant howling of the pack, celebrating my death.
They thought I was gone, I thought, my breath hitching in my throat as the last of my strength drained away.
I looked at the moon one last time and whispered into the void.
"I pray to whichever deity cares to listen. If you give me one more chance, I will avenge the death of my family and purge the earth from these lowly beasts that slaughtered my family."
The darkness finally surged forward, cold and absolute.
I promise.
