Hopeless romantic Leo believes in meet-cutes and grand gestures, but his reality often falls short of his rom-com dreams. When a misdelivered package leads him to the doorstep of the seemingly straight Enrique, a pragmatic guy from Baguio with a pet snake, Leo can't help but wonder if fate is finally dealing him a hand. Amidst the bustling backdrop of Quezon City and the unexpected bonds formed during a new job training, could a shared laugh over forgotten middle-child status and a gentle pat on the back be the start of something real under the vast Manila sky?

Chapter 1: First Impressions at Twenty-One Floors High
Stepping into the training room on the twenty-first floor felt like entering a meticulously organized machine. The rows of identical computer stations stretched out before Leo, each one sterile and impersonal, monitors dark and waiting. The hum of the air conditioning was a constant, low thrum that instantly raised goosebumps on his arms – a familiar discomfort he always associated with overly air-conditioned spaces, a stark contrast to the humid warmth he was used to back in Cavite. But then his gaze drifted to the expansive windows, and the breathtaking panorama of Quezon City unfolded before him, a sprawling tapestry of buildings and bustling streets so far below. It was a view that simultaneously made him feel insignificant and strangely connected to the vastness of the metropolis. Seven other new hires were scattered around the room, a collection of unfamiliar faces that Leo quietly observed as he searched for an unoccupied station. Near the window, three women in their thirties chatted easily, their warm smiles and relaxed postures suggesting an approachable nature. One, with kind eyes and a gentle demeanor, offered him a welcoming nod – Aisha, he would soon learn. Another, with a more pragmatic air, gave a brief but friendly smile – Carla. The third, her expression thoughtful, simply offered a quiet acknowledgment – Yumi. In one of the middle rows sat two younger women. One, with bright, curious eyes and an energetic bounce to her step, was already engaged in a lively conversation with someone on her phone – Bianca. The other, seated a bit apart, seemed more reserved, her gaze occasionally flicking around the room but mostly fixed on her lap – Sofia. And then, near the front, fiddling with the strap of his backpack, was the guy from Baguio. He was a little younger, maybe twenty-four, with slightly tousled hair and a hesitant air about him. Leo’s initial impression was simply… ordinary. Not particularly striking, but not unattractive either. Just a regular guy adjusting to a new environment. He cleared his throat softly and adjusted his glasses. Leo didn’t know his name yet, didn't know about the pet snake named Kevin or the hamster Hammy. He was just another new colleague in this unfamiliar corporate landscape. Leo chose a station towards the back, wanting to observe for a while before fully engaging. He placed his bag down and took a deep breath, trying to quell the familiar flutter of anxiety that always accompanied new social situations. He reminded himself to just be himself, the easygoing guy his close friends knew. The orientation began with the arrival of the trainer, a sharp woman with a confident stride, followed by the team leader and the quiet QA personnel. The usual introductions and a dry overview of the company and the job they had all been hired for filled the first hour. Leo listened attentively, absorbing the information, his past experience as a freelance social media manager giving him a slight advantage in understanding the digital aspects of the role. Then came the dreaded icebreaker: the tissue roll game. A collective groan and nervous laughter rippled through the room as the trainer enthusiastically explained the rules. When the roll reached Leo, his palms were slightly sweaty. He carefully pulled off eight tissues, more than he had intended. He took a breath and began, his voice a surprisingly steady baritone that belied his inner nervousness. "Hi everyone, I'm Leo," he started, offering a small, genuine smile. "First thing – I'm gay." He met the curious gazes around the room. "And apparently," he added with a touch of amusement, "I don't always look it." He noticed Aisha and Carla exchange warm, understanding glances. "Secondly, I'm the breadwinner for my family back in Cavite. Which means I have a small army waiting for me at home – eight cats and five dogs. It's a chaotic but loving household." He continued, holding up another tissue. "Number three, I am completely addicted to medical dramas. Give me a good emergency room scene or a complex surgery, and I'm hooked. ER and Hospital Playlist are my current favorites." This prompted a nod of recognition from Aisha. "Oh, Hospital Playlist is great!" she exclaimed, a warm smile directed at Leo. "My sister keeps telling me to watch ER. It's a classic, right?" Leo nodded, a small conversation sparking between them about their favorite shows and the appeal of the medical world. He moved on. "Fourth, I actually went to college for Liberal Arts. My parents wanted me to be a teacher. It wasn't my passion, but hey, a degree is a degree." A slight shrug accompanied his words. "Fifth," a touch of wistfulness entered his voice, "I even got into medical school. I loved it. I was so close... but financial issues forced me to stop. Being the breadwinner and all." Aisha's expression softened with empathy. "Sixth," he continued, trying to lighten the mood, "Let's just say my past relationship wasn't exactly a fairytale. It was... not a good experience. Lessons learned." He offered a wry smile. "Seventh, I actually love to sing." This earned surprised looks from the trainer, QA, and team leader. "What?" Leo asked, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "You guys are musicians?" A small connection formed over this shared interest. Finally, "Eighth," he concluded, "I'm generally a pretty easygoing guy. Go with the flow, that's me." Then it was the Baguio guy's turn. He took only three tissues. "Alright," he announced, his voice a bit louder and more animated than Leo's, already hinting at his lively personality. "I have a pet snake named Kevin, and a hamster named Hammy." He launched into a humorous story about Kevin's near-escapes and Hammy's nocturnal adventures, complete with awkward gestures and sound effects that had the whole room laughing. Even Sofia offered a small, almost shy smile. "Secondly," Enrique continued, "I was a freelance software developer for a while, and then I had a six-month stint working in a government office. Let's just say the freelance life suited my sanity better." He rolled his eyes playfully. "And lastly," he said, "I'm a middle child. The forgotten sandwich filling of the family." He threw his hands up in mock exasperation. "Anyone else know the struggle?" Leo raised his hand slightly, a small, knowing smile on his lips. Enrique's gaze met his. "You too?" he asked, a hint of camaraderie in his voice. "It's a tough life, being perpetually stuck in the middle. Not the oldest, not the baby. You kind of get... overlooked sometimes." "Definitely," Leo chuckled. "It's like you're the Switzerland of the family. Neutral territory, but also... sometimes invisible." They shared a brief laugh, a small, unexpected connection forming between them over this shared experience. As the game concluded and the first day drew to a close, the initial stiffness in the room had eased. Small conversations bubbled up. Bianca’s infectious energy drew a small group around her, while Tita Letty offered a few gentle words of encouragement to Sofia, who seemed to appreciate the quiet attention. Packing his bag, Leo exchanged a few more words with Aisha about their shared taste in television. He also noticed Enrique animatedly chatting with Bianca about coding, his initial awkwardness seemingly melting away as he spoke about something he was passionate about. Leaving the cool, corporate air of the twenty-first floor and stepping back into the humid Manila evening, Leo felt a sense of cautious optimism. He had met a diverse group of people, found a surprising musical connection, and shared a small, almost insignificant moment of understanding with Enrique, the slightly quirky guy from Baguio. He didn't know it yet, but this seemingly ordinary first day held the quiet beginnings of a complicated and potentially life-altering story, one that might just involve the guy with the pet snake.
