Chapter Five: The Luna’s Betrayal Astrid’s POV "Beta Kennen is currently paralyzed." My hands fell off Mary's hold. She stopped in her tracks as well, frozen, and body slightly shaken. I overheard the Alpha's wife talking to someone whose scent was familiar… our Delta, Thalia. "After their honeymoon, Sabrina would be the new Alpha.” I overheard the Alpha's wife say. She had already picked a new Alpha while the Beta just fell sick and Maya was still very much alive. My heart grew cold and I pushed Mary behind me. I kicked the door down, standing before the two while my chest heaved up and down. I had the words to say but I couldn't open my mouth for fear of screaming instead of speaking. I suspected foul play! Kennen was healthy just this morning. How could they talk about a new Alpha when I was still alive! Sabrina had no shred of Alpha blood! "Sabrina will not be Alpha while I’m alive." I sounded more calm than I felt. The Alpha's wife stepped back, looking me up and down in surprise. Then, her blue eyes fixated on me but like always, I could never tell what she was thinking. I needed her to dare me to anger and I’d release all the pain that I felt, but the Alpha's wife stayed composed. “What are you doing here? You are supposed to be married to the Crown Prince—” “He didn’t want anyone but Sabrina.” I replied, concealing the actual truth. “Take Sabrina to him instead.” She had a slight panic in her eyes. Of course, no one would dare go against the Crown Prince’s wishes. After all, in her words, we had to do as they wanted so the pack would survive. "Sabrina is married…” She turned to Mary. "Let Maya go..." Delta Thalia snapped her head to her. "Are you crazy, Luna? Maya is only three." The panic in The Alpha’s wife’s eyes grew more intense. "You can't give the Alpha to a Crown Prince!” "Astrid said she doesn't want Sabrina being the Alpha." Delta Thalia said, taking my side, and facing the Alpha’s wife. "And only two children were present in the will, so only either of them can be the Alpha or coronate the next Alpha." The Alpha’s wife’s face lit up. “Then Sabrina will be the Alpha. She’s the Alpha’s daughter.” The Delta was quiet, before she sighed and said, "The actual Alpha of this pack is Alpha Xenia, Maya's mother and aunt of Astrid.” Delta Thalia replied. “In her will, only Astrid or Maya will be the next Alpha. Sabrina is Alpha Reed's stepdaughter. Did you forget?” I hadn’t forgotten. My hand tightened around Mary. "Then, we will have no Alpha till Kennen gets better. Sabrina will rule as his Luna for now.” My stepmother said with finality. That was another way to do it. If there's no Alpha in a pack, then the Luna would handle everything. But I stepped forward, blocking the Alpha’s wife from going any further. “But for the Luna to take the role of a figurehead, that will mean that the current Luna would be disposed of, and the council body would allow the new Luna to take her place.” My green eyes narrowed at her, and I made sure she understood where I was coming from. Her lips pressed together and curved downwards. She must have understood. If she wanted her daughter to get a chance at being the Luna, she would have to remove herself from that position, and leave her daughter’s election as Luna to the council. And the council wouldn’t dare do that unless the next Luna had good ties to a current Alpha. She lowered her head in defeat and the heaviness in my heart lightened. But not for long. “If there’s no Alpha around, what stops my daughter from being the next Luna or even Alpha?” She addressed that question to Delta Thalia. “Wouldn’t the only surviving child of an Alpha be the next Alpha whether or not they are in the will?” I tilted my head, keeping my eyes on her. What was that question supposed to mean? Sabrina could never be the only surviving child of an Alpha while Maya and I were alive. Unless… She raised her head, and there was no light in her eyes. Mary stepped away first, pulling me with her. The Delta opened her mouth to speak, but the Alpha’s wife yelled out. “Guards, seize Astrid Reed and Maya Ayana for the crime of harming the Beta of Writhed Rose Pack!” “What!” The Delta and I screamed. Mary quickly sprinted out first to find Maya, and I didn’t know if I should follow her or stay behind to fight against the approaching guards. “Luna, that is going too far!” Delta Thalia admonished but the Alpha’s wife shoved her hand aside. “Next, I will kill you too, Thalia!” She pointed at the Delta. There was nothing else to do but run, and I did. Shamelessly again, after facing yet another humiliating ritual of my own pack chasing me and their future Alpha out of our home. But I knew this would happen sooner or later, hence my decision to leave of my own accord. “Big Sis.” I heard Maya’s small voice call me. She was held by Mary who had strapped herself with the two heavy bags, and stood by the door with fearful eyes. I hated that she had to get dragged into any of this, but she was safer with us than with them. “Let’s go.” I ordered, before shifting into Eve. The door was broken into by raging warriors so I jumped off the window, landing safely down three floors and making a dash for the main gate. The warriors followed, and their stomping feet matched the quickness of my beating heart. But this was the only way to save Maya. The Alpha’s wife might still find a way to make her get married to the Crown Prince because the Prince wouldn't want someone else's bride. Or she’d kill Maya. I heard a warrior grunt first, before feeling the sharp sting at my side. Eve growled lowly in pain, and jumped over the wall, galloping heavily like her life depended on it because it did. All our lives did. “My lady, he struck you!” Mary screamed, confirming the pain on my side. It broke my heart because Maya soon began crying. The spear was still buried in my wolf but Eve made sure to keep moving. Any display of weakness and the warriors would close in on us. “I am fine.” I told Mary in mind-link. The whole pack was already on the sid of the Alpha’s wife. How did it happen so quickly under my nose? I shook that thought aside and concentrated on escaping. Saving Maya from the Crown Prince and getting stronger for revenge was all that mattered. “W-Where are we going, my lady?” Mary asked amidst sobs. "Don't worry.” I assured her in mind link. “We'll survive this, and we'd be back to take back what is ours."
