Chapter 22
Vicky puts a call through to me.
‘This guy’s getting angry. He’s already left a message.’
‘Right,’ I say, ‘I’ll take it.’
I smile in preparation.
‘What’s the problem?’ I say, sounding perky and friendly. He is not sounding the same way.
‘Are you in charge here? I said I wanted to speak to someone in charge.’
Why me? Where’s Emily?
‘I’m Juliette, the senior property manager.’
‘Well, you’ll have to do.’ He can’t see me raise my eyebrows.
‘I rang Mandy this morning and left a message about the cracked tiles that have been replaced in my property. I want them checked. Do I have to do that myself? I thought that’s what I’m paying you for.’
‘Mandy’s been out at an appointment this morning.’ As I say this I wonder where she has gone with her hangover and her arrears-problem
