Chapter 6

EDNA Malrick was right. Even my home wasn’t safe anymore. I pressed my lips together, blood boiling with the rage that was seething through me. What exactly does he want from me now? He had been so eager to end the marriage and now that it’s over he won’t stop finding me. Before Malrick could step down from the car, I grabbed his arm lightly to stop him. “No, I’m following you.” I replied and he frowned, but I didn’t allow him to say anything before I added, “This is my issue and I will handle it.” I had already shown weakness to him earlier and I didn’t want that to repeat itself. Malrick might be my childhood friend, but I had made up my mind to stop showing anybody what lay behind my face. Like Colin, he might just take advantage of it. Yes, I admit that after what happened with Colin, I found it hard to trust anyone anymore. It couldn’t be blamed on me, I just couldn’t bring myself to. Malrick and I locked gazes for a few seconds and after a while, he had to relent. A resigned sigh escaped his lips and he nodded, “Then I will allow you to follow me. I want to see what that bastard can do to you in my presence.” I said nothing to that and after a second, I stepped down from the car. Colin’s eyes followed my every move sharply and intently. There was something about his eyes that I didn’t like, it had a predatory glint that was never there when we were together. It made me utterly disgusted and cautious around him. It was as though he had turned to a different person. I stopped before him and folded my arms calmly, “Yes? What do you want?” Colin studied me for a second before putting on a smile, “Nothing much, Edna. I just want to have a calm conversation with you.” I sneered, “Calm? You mean strangling me and almost ripping the air out of my lungs?” His smile faltered slightly, but he quickly regained his composure, “I was not in my right senses then. I was drunk, so I deeply apologize.” I gave him a slightly surprised look. He apologized so quickly, what was he up to now? “Why are you here?” I wasn’t in the mood to entertain his nonsense, breathing the same air as him irritates me even and I wanted him to leave as soon as possible. “Edna, you know better than anyone else how a cooperation between the Parker’s industries and my company would benefit everyone. This is even a chance for the Parkers to have more network, this deal will only benefit us both and benefit the Parkers even more.” He explained earnestly, and I just watched him. “Oh? Why do you think I will accept?” I asked. I should be happy that he was begging me, but I wasn’t. I want to see him crumble. I want to see what he has ever worked for get destroyed under his eyes, the despair I had once experienced, I want him to face it. Someone like Colin, who never batted an eye when I was dying does not deserve to be happy. “What do you want?” He asked through gritted teeth. I was about to brush him off when a thought occurred to me and I smiled. “What do I want? Simple. Just ten percent shares from your company’s liquidity and I also want you to send this woman away forever.” The composed look on Colin’s face finally changed drastically. “Edna, don’t bite more than you can chew, you know that is not possible. I only have forty percent shares, how can I…” Now this is the real Colin I know. “If you can’t do that, then forget about it.” I said, smiling to myself. Stacy glared at me. I know she’s probably itching to pick up a fight with me but because of Colin, she’s probably holding back. “Edna…” “Right, I’m not done yet.” I cut him short. “You must also apologize for how you had treated me in public, I will gladly invite the reporters over.” Colin gritted his teeth and glared at me, “Edna, what…” “Forget cooperation between both companies if you can’t do all these things, I have been lenient enough.” I replied calmly, hiding the scheming glint that flashed in my eyes. After a while, Colin finally spoke up, “Okay, I agree to your conditions.” I wasn’t so surprised that he did. His company was going through financial difficulties at this moment and though he never said anything about it, I knew. With these difficulties, cooperating with just any company would be a loss for him, so he needed a bigger fish. And the Parkers were exactly what he needed. I was just starting. “Apologize to the press tomorrow and I will sign the agreement. I also don’t want to see Stacy anymore, that’s all.” With that said, I turned around to leave with Malrick who has been silent ever since. “Edna, why are you leaving with this man?” Colin’s voice suddenly rang out behind me and I rolled my eyes. I turned and gave him a look, “When does what I do have anything to do with you?” Colin’s eyes flashed with something I couldn’t quite name, but it was unsettling. “Edna, you think you are safe with him? He is not as clean as you think. In the business world, everyone knows he uses women like trash, his name isn’t exactly flawless.” He said earnestly and I just stared at him. Malrick couldn’t even be bothered to reply to him, he stood beside me calmly, staring at Colin like he was looking at a clown. A brief silence followed, then I laughed. But it was mirthless. Colin’s expression stiffened, “You are laughing?” “Do you really think you are in any position to speak of another man’s character when you are the worst of your kind?” I asked and his jaw tightened. I scoffed lightly and this time, I didn’t turn back around. Inside Malrick’s car, nobody spoke for a while. I turned sideways to see that Malrick had a frown on his face as he stared ahead. Was he angry because of the way Colin had spoken to him? Malrick might seem calm, but as my childhood friend, I believe I know him more than anyone else. He’s actually a prideful man. “Don’t think too much about what he said, he is just running his mouth for no reason.” Yet, he shook his head. “Why should I be worried about someone like him? I’m worried for you. How can you agree to cooperate with his company just like that? I have told you, I can help you deal with him.” It’s true. Malrick has all the means to deal with Colin and his company. But no. One thing was that I didn’t want to owe anybody a favor and the second was that I wanted to use my own hands to destroy Colin. I didn’t reply to Malrick and merely dialed a number. When the call went through, I said, “Send me the clip now.” “Yes ma’am.” It was Stella, my assistant. In a second, my phone vibrated and I handed it over to Malrick. When he watched the content, he was slightly surprised. “When did this…” “So, rest assured. I have my reasons.” Tomorrow, I want to watch how Colin would embarrass himself.
