Chapter 1
EDNA Three weeks ago, the day Colin had handed me the divorce papers and left for a business trip, I had found out I was pregnant. Confusion wrapped me like a second skin. Should I have told him immediately, or should I have waited? Would it save our marriage? “Please be careful,” I said to the housekeeper who had helped me carry the little basket I had made as a surprise for Colin. She placed it on the table which we’d decorated with baby things to announce my pregnancy to Colin. “That would be all, Mrs. Alex, you can take the remaining day off.” I smiled and watched her leave before going to the table to make final touches to the setup. It was just the perfect little surprise. Our baby was going to save our marriage. My hand slid down to the little bump growing on my tummy, gently rubbing it. Our baby. Colin and I had been married for four years, he’d always wanted children, and I wanted children too but I’d had complications, and I had watched these complications turn our lovely marriage into a cold war. Colin no longer looked at me the way he did, he no longer wanted to be around me, and three weeks ago, he’d handed me divorce papers saying it was best if we went our separate ways. After he’d left for a business trip to London, I’d found out I was pregnant that evening, and it’s been a hassle, trying to keep it a secret until he was back. My hand on my tummy as I looked at the beautiful setup, the door to the living room pushed open, I had turned back thinking it was Mrs. Alex, she’d probably forgotten something but the door opened fully revealing Colin, in a beautiful black suit, clean-shaven beard, and his handsome face. “Colin..” My lips stretched out in a smile only stopping when his secretary walked behind him into the house. Did he have a meeting with her? He was only just back. “Hey, you’re back.” I walked to him, stretching my hands apart for a hug but he’d pulled away instantly. “What are you doing here, Edna?” His teeth gritted as he asked. “What do you mean? I live here, silly.” A chuckle escaped my mouth as I slowly walked him towards the table. “ I had asked you to leave,” he said, yanking his hand off me, pushing me aside. “Colin, you told me she was gone. So what the hell is she still doing here?” My head whipped back to look at his secretary. Tall, blonde, beautiful. Stacy. Stacy has always handled all of my husband’s business but I wonder what she was doing here. “Edna,” he grabbed me by my arm pulling me far away from Stacy. “You agreed to sign the divorce before I was back, you should have left before I was back.” “We were thinking about it besides I want to show you something.” I yanked my arm off him and dragged him to the table I had set up. Stacy walked behind him. “I am pregnant,” I announced. “We don’t have to get divorced, I am pregnant, I found out three weeks ago.” Colin’s eyes softened and I watched him take a step back bewildered. I just wanted him and our little family to be complete. “How should he believe you? What if it’s fake, you might have faked it to remain in the marriage because of his money?” Stacy’s voice was loud but her accusations were louder? “What? What gives you the right to say such nonsense? Who do you think you are?” I raised my voice at her. “I am Colin’s girlfriend and for goodness sake, Edna stop acting like you don’t see the chemistry between me and me.” She walked to a bewildered Colin and pulled him to stand beside her. His hand wrapped around her softly. “How do I know that you are not faking it?” Colin asked but that was the least of my problems now. Colin was sleeping with his secretary and I never knew about it. “You’re sleeping with her? You’ve been cheating on me all this time and here I was thinking that I was the problem. You have been cheating on me?” Tears had built up in my eyes. I had known that we were distant because of my inability to give him a child but I never knew that someone was warming his bed for him. I trusted him. “Oh shut up, Edna..” Colin sparked. “I did all you wanted, I quit my job just to focus on our family, I gave up my dreams for you.” And so many other things that I couldn’t tell him about. My father had disowned me because of Colin and today I find out that behind his coldness was his secretary, Stacy. “Your job was useless. Edna, take your fake pregnancy and get out of my house. We are done. We were done the moment you couldn’t give me a child.” He said and my reality snapped. My marriage, four years of togetherness was ending, and my baby? Would my baby grow without a father? No. “ I have proof that I am pregnant. I took a test.” Before I could finish my statement, my legs were carrying me out of the living room and up the stairs to our room so I could bring the test results. I grabbed it from one of the drawers I had kept it in and headed out of the room, bumping into Stacy the second that I walked out of the room. “You should have been gone long ago but you’re so greedy for his money you faked a pregnancy.” Her words were blunt but I took a step away from her and headed to the stairs but another step and she was yanking my hair and pulling me backwards. “A lowlife like you doesn’t deserve a man like Colin. So you'd better leave before I make your life miserable. I’ve been patient with you but your time is up, whore.” I’d never thought that a day would come when my husband’s secretary would speak to me in such a manner but I had no strength to fight a woman because of Colin. I just wanted to prove that I was actually pregnant. “Let go of my hair, Stacy.” I tried to move but her grip on me was tight. I turned swiftly and pushed her away and reached for the stairs but she gripped me again by my neck. “Let me go!” I yelled. I was at the edge of the stairs, one push and I would fall right to the floor. “Stacy let me go,” I yelled at the top of my voice. “Colin!!” “What’s happening?”Colin asked, walking to the foot of the stairs, Stacy swiftly swapped positions, coming in front of the stairs, still holding me tight behind her. If she took another step, she would fall down the stairs. “Edna, what are you doing? Let her be? You’ll make her fall?” “What? She’s holding me. Let go, Stacy.” I yelled. “Please, Edna! Please let me go, I promise to leave Colin, just don’t push me down the stairs.” “I am not holding you..” I snapped. Stacy pushed herself towards the stairs, grabbing me for support and pulling me along with her. “Stacy!!” Colin screamed. My head hit the railing and then the steps of the stairs one at a time. My waist hit each step one at a time until we both rolled to the feet of the stairs. The rusty smell of my blood filled my nose, my body ached, cuts and bruises filled my skin and my tummy was sore. I clutched my tummy softly, groaning. “Help, my baby..” I could barely feel myself. My head ached painfully and I could barely tell where I was. “How could you be so wicked, Edna. You pushed her.” Colin reached for Stacy on the floor, picking her up in one lift. “My body hurts,” she cried and when she looked at me she was smirking. She had caused this. I felt a heavy cramp in my abdomen and screamed. “Help..” “You'd better be gone from my house before I’m back, Edna.” With Stacy in his arms, he’d left and my reality had come crashing down. He never really cared. I felt the thick blood run down my legs and the sharp pain again in my tummy. I managed to find my phone in my pocket and dialed my best friend’s number, she picked up on the first ring and my voice followed immediately. “Please help me, Mae.” I cried. “I’m at home, please help..” Another wave of dizziness hit me and my vision slowly blurred until it was covered with darkness.
