Chapter 2

EDNA White lights, a beeping sound from a monitor machine, and a pounding head. I groaned, my eyes opening gently. “Hmm.” I lifted my eyes, scanning the room. I was not dead but in a hospital room and my head ached badly. I lifted myself slowly trying to sit up when the door of the hospital burst open letting in a fine young man. Hair sleeked to the back of his neck, strong chiseled jaw, the perfect nose, and the most familiar expression of worry. “Malrick?” My voice didn’t sound like mine, it felt too empty and weak. I adjusted myself gently on the bed and he reached for me immediately. What in the name of God was Malrick Delvin doing here? “You shouldn’t sit yet,” his voice was tender and masculine at the same time and as he helped me lie down on the bed, I took in a whiff of his smell. Musky, a hint of coffee, and gentle. “Are you okay?” He asked and I’d made a small nod to his question. I had so many questions. What was he doing here, how did I end up here, where is Mae and my baby? But I closed my eyes and let myself gather enough strength to ask. “How is my baby?” When I finally opened my eyes, it was the first thing I asked. Malrick’s focusing gaze turned into something more tender or maybe something uneasy. He dragged the stool at the end of the bed and sat right next to me. Heaven! I heaved, hoping he didn’t have bad news. “Do you want me to call the doctor, or do you want me to tell you?” The question felt like a negative answer to my question and I felt myself tremble out of fear that my baby was gone. “Tell me.” I swallowed hard and watched him take deep breaths, his hand in mine as he caressed it softly. “The doctor had explained you had quite a fall and your baby was too weak and it couldn’t make it.” His words were soft and gentle but they were the most painful words I’d heard in a long time. “No! No! My baby.” My scream felt unheard as I cried. Malrick held me in his arms and he let me scream as much as I wanted to. “I dreamt of holding my baby in my arms..” My voice had fallen into a whimper. I had cried for hours and still my baby was gone. Malrick had left me alone for a minute to get some food and I sat alone in the oddly quiet hospital room. My phone sat on the side table staring at me. I grabbed the phone and made a call to Colin, he probably didn’t know I was in the hospital or that I had lost the baby. His voice echoed through the phone as he picked up on the second ring. “You'd better have something important to tell me..” “I.. uhm,” my throat hurt and my words felt muffled as I tried to speak. “I’m at the hospital.. and the baby,” I paused, tears slowly gathering at the corner of my eyes. “We lost the baby..” The words finally came heavy and a sigh extended from Colin’s end of the line. “I don’t care about your goddamn dead baby, don’t ever call me again because we are done. .” The line went dead immediately and so did my hope and every other feeling. I felt numb but at the same time hurt. A wave of reality washed my stupidity away and more tears fell down my cheeks. How could I have been so stupid? “I’ve got food,” Malrick announced, some bags of food in his hand as he walked in. I dropped the phone back on the side table and quickly wiped my eyes with the back of my palm. He set the table and let me eat while he watched me. When I was done, he cleared the table and sat next to me again. Grey sparkling eyes on me, jaw tightening, and the most ordinary expression. “Are you going back to him?” His question was short but it put me in a state of distress. I didn’t know the answer to it yet. When I’d stayed for too long, he shook his head lightly. Was I that stupid? ~~~ The next day, the doctor had discharged me and Malrick had insisted on driving me back to the house. He stopped me right at the gate of the mansion and I walked carefully. When I walked in, an image of Stacy cooking in the apron welcomed me. “What the hell do you think you’re doing here?” she snapped at me. I paused. “I just want to talk to you, Colin.” My voice had echoed out more softly than I had expected. “No, you cannot see him, you cheap w***e. You think I will let you see my man?” She snapped. As she yelled, the stairs thumped and Colin climbed down in a clean white robe. “What do you want, Edna. We are done.” “I’m here to finalize it,” I pulled the document I had in my bag out and handed it to him. “It’s divorce papers from my lawyers, you’ll make no loss, I just want out. So sign them and I can move on.” I handed him the paper and a pen and he grabbed it immediately scribbling on it. When he was done he threw the papers everywhere and I was forced to pick them up. “Thank you for the time we spent together,” I said, gathering all of the papers together. “I will go pack my bag and leave..” “No, you’ll do no such thing. You’ll take nothing with you and you’ll leave.” “I have some important things I need to take.” My words were calm and coordinated but by now I had known Colin and I knew he wouldn’t let me take anything I wanted. “Leave, Colin doesn’t want you taking any of his things, after all he had gotten them for you.” I took a step back and looked at the man I had been married to and only now did I see a monster. He was ruthless and wicked and had taken my love for him for granted. I took another step backwards and turned around and rushed out of the house. When I had gotten out of the mansion, a few more cars had covered the parking space. The door opened and a man in a fine suit walked out. “Miss Parker, we’re sent by your father to pick you up.” The mention of my father’s name sent a shiver down my spine.
