Chapter 3

EDNA Malrick stepped out of his car and came to stand by my side. “Your father wants you back home, Edna. You should go home?” His hand was on my shoulder softly and he urged me to go with them. “I don’t think it’s the right decision.” I expressed. “I think it’s the perfect decision, your father wants you back, go home.” He nudged me and I took one step towards the car, looking back at him he gave me a very warm smile and then waved at me. The car door opened and I got in. My heart reeled with so much emotion. What would my father say, would he be angry? I had left him four years ago for Colin, forgetting everything that belonged to me and the people who loved me because I thought that I was in love with Colin and me. As the car passed through the gates of the Parker Mansion, anxiety crawled through my skin and it felt like I would die of cold in a few seconds. The car came to a halt in front of the mansion and the door was pulled open immediately by the valet. I’d sat for a few seconds just taking in the view of my home. I’d remembered my father and me moving into this mansion after my mother’s death, her death had been a call for a new start. I also could vividly recall throwing my bags out of the window of my room to elope with Colin. I was stupid four years ago but today, I am a free woman. “Ma’am..” the chauffeur called out to me, pulling me out of my many thoughts. “Thank you.” I got out of the car and headed straight into the mansion. My steps were shaky and my breath hitched. My anxiety rose like bile. “Eddy!!” My father squeaked like a child on seeing me and in one second I was a scared, broken woman and the next minute, I was a chuckling child in her father’s arms. The tears I’d held from the beginning of the ride fell the moment I was in his arms. “Oh Edna, my darling girl. You’ve made your father a happy man today.” He beamed, pulling away from me to look at my face. My father had gotten old, his hair was all gray and he looked tired. “I’m so sorry, Dad.” The words slipped from my mouth and the tears wouldn’t stop falling. “I had thought I was making the best decision, but the truth is you’ll always know best for me. I’m sorry for running away and I’m sorry for making you worry. I’m sorry for ever thinking that you hated me.” “Eddy,” he called softly, my hands in his eyes, his brown eyes piercing mine. “I forgave you long ago, princess. I just wanted you home. Back to where you belong and you’re here and I cannot be any happier.” “I’m so sorry..” The mere thought of running away with Colin filled me with so much disgust and hate for myself. “Eddy, one more apology from you and you’re in trouble. Now let’s go in, I’ve had Alma make your favorite food.” My father led me to the dining hall which had remained the same even after I left four years ago. The cutlery clattered on the plates as we ate. “Now that you are back, it’s high time I step down as CEO being chairman and CEO is very tasky, my dear..” “What?” I’d almost choked on my food. “It’s time for you to go back to being the woman you used to be. Get your life back on track. Sulking because of a man who’s not up to your standard is of no use.” My father was right about that, Colin was not up to my standard. I’d remember using my influence to help him get to where he was and I’d never told him about it. He’d never bothered to find out who my family was. I should have known from the start. “What do you say, Edna?” “You’ll have your secretary contact me and give me all the necessary information I need before Monday. I would like to rest for some more days.” “That’s okay.” We both went quiet for a while. “I heard about your baby. She’s with your mom so she’s in safe hands.” My father’s words had moved me to tears. I had spent the remaining days of the week in bed, sulking and trying to move on from Colin, and by Monday, I was officially the acting CEO of Parker Group. “You have a conference by 12 pm, you’re one of the speakers and your speech has been sent to your email, Miss Parker. Please do contact me if there are any mistakes.” My new secretary Stella explained as we walked side by side into the office. The staff stared as I walked in. Maybe it was the fact that I was back or the fact that I looked good but I know the eyes were lingering and it was almost haunting. “I thought I had a meeting by 8:30?” I asked and she nodded. “Yes, and the details about the meeting have been emailed to you.” She explained pushing the door to my office open. The office was clean, with a brown mahogany desk in the middle of the office with my name on it Edna Parker, Acting CEO. The view from the wall to the glass window was magnificent. I took a seat and just basked in the warmth of my office. This is where I belong. Once it was 8:30 Stella informed me that my first client had arrived and I had asked her to send him in. The door of my office opened to the alluring image of the man who had saved me a week ago. Malrick Delvin. “Malrick, hey? I didn’t know you would be the one coming today.” I stood and gave him a peck on both of his cheeks “Some little birdy told me, you’ll be the one finalizing the deal today.” He chuckled and I nodded. We’d sat to talk and all I could think of was how grateful I was to him for saving my life. “I never got to thank you for saving me,” “You don’t have to,” “Thank you for being a good friend to me, Malrick.” Malrick had always been there when I was younger, when my mother had died. He had stayed by my side and even now. “Yeah,” he hummed “That’s what friends are for.” “Yeah. Friends,” I muttered like I was tasting the word.
