Chapter 8

EMILY'S POV It was a party arranged by the Lycan King Adrian for the unmated wolves to find their missing pairs. It was my kind of party. Several wolves were standing in pairs, talking and discussing. Some of them just stared, sitting alone on the benches by the pool. Smiling, I headed over to Helena, my friend and a member of the pack. She was chattering excitedly to a handsome, well-bodied young man. When she saw me, she waved, excused herself, and gave me a cheeky grin. “Guess what?” Helena's life was a puzzle, so most times I couldn't guess. She was that wolf whose parents had abandoned her when she was a cub because of how weak she had been as a child. Not only had she survived, she had learned how to be stronger, superior, and far better than most wolves I knew. She jogged almost every day of the week and what she lacked in superhuman combat, she made up for in the physical. She was beautiful, compassionate and that friend who listened, and most times I didn't hesitate to dump my problems on her because she listened. “What?” I muttered, eyeing the young man she had been talking to. He was handsome, his hair was jet black and he had a well-set jawline. He smiled lazily at me, then sat on a bench next to the pool, his eyes seeming to focus on the other wolves in the party. “That was Clark Thomasville. My God, I never expected him to be so handsome in reality. He's the perfect man, my God.” I smiled at her, acknowledging that I too, hadn't even known that it was Clark Thomasville. He was one of the most famous soldiers in the pack for his ability to shapeshift and also his strength when it came to combat, both physically and supernaturally. He was the ideal soldier, but he wasn't famous facially. He was one of those people whose feats preceded their fame, people hardly knew his face, but they knew what he had done, they knew his name. “Well, I didn't know that. Is he also unmated? That's a huge surprise.” Smiling, Helena did a small dance in excitement. “Yes, and I want to be his mate if not for anything. I approached him and talked to him, and I'm down if he's down too. I pray the moon goddess accepts our union though.” I smiled at Helena for I knew why she was already smitten with a man she had met a few hours ago. Since she wasn't supernaturally active in combat, she had always wanted a wolf active in supernatural combat for a mate. That was why she had approached him in the first place. I knew this, but I knew it was better not to say it out loud. Some things were better left unspoken. “So who do you think will be your mate?” I smiled at her, knowing that I had absolutely no idea. I was a sorry sight when it came to men, I was shy and withdrawn, and if anything, I preferred to be training, working on my powers and how fast and sleek I could become. Men made me feel uncomfortable, they made me feel sweaty and made my head spin. I didn't want to perspire unnecessarily today, and neither did I want my head to start spinning of its own accord. “Well, I have no idea. I'm lost when it comes to these things, you know. How's your training coming up? Still doing the early morning jogging?” “Of course!” She shrieked, laying out her hands with a cheerful smile. “Do you think I'll ever stop? It's my life now, unfortunately.” We were laughing when King Adrian appeared on the verandah of the house that overlooked the pool, smiling and raising his hands for silence. I always admired him. His demeanor was always calm and composed no matter the situation, and he was that man you ran to when you needed advice and any training that was proving too difficult to handle. He was the best Lycan king I had seen so far, although I had to admit that I knew only one, but he was the best one regardless. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen of the Bloodhound pack. Welcome to the unmated evening pool party!” He smiled, raising his glass once more while the people cheered, raising their glasses to him too. “While we're here to choose our missing pairs, please don't hesitate to have fun. This is why we're here, to make up for the time we have spent working our asses off in one way or the other. In a few minutes, the moon goddess herself will descend upon us, and link us to our destined mates. Until then, make sure you enjoy the party! I hope y'all have a nice and wonderful time!” The crowd cheered again and the noise returned with full force. I understood what he meant by the moon goddess descending on us. In a few minutes, everyone was going to be hypersensitive, and you would develop an instant connection with your fated mate, you would be able to sense him or her out from a mile away. The famous thing about these unmated parties was the scent of your mate. The air would immediately be filled with sweet-smelling scents, the scent of love, the scent of each and everyone finding their fated and chosen mate. I was ready for this part of the party, and I did a little twirl, excitement, and anxiety starting to build in my system. Who was going to be my fated mate? “Come on, here, have a drink. I believe the whiskey will help with the hypersensitivity too. Come on, drink up.” Shoving a drink in my face, I accepted it wholly, knowing that there was nothing like a “no” when it came to a high and free-spirited Helena. Slurping the whiskey in my glass, I smiled widely, ready to accept who the moon goddess had chosen for me to spend the rest of my life with.
