My mother's words gave me a new sense of hope. I had a strong urge within me to change the narrative of my life. I knew I was meant for more and I deserved more.
Just as my mother had said, I was my brother's equal. Society and expectations had only made him seem more desirable. I have always wished to be respected in my rights and given the respect that I am accorded. But it seems that waiting for the universe to deem me worthy was not working. If I wanted people to see my worth, then I had to show it to them. If I wanted respect, then I had to demand it. That I was willing to do now.
"You know, life isn't fair. If you are waiting for someone to give you all that you would need on a platter, then you might just have to wait forever. If you want something, then demand it." Mother said with so much vigor in her voice.
"Thank you so much, Mom," I said giving her a very big and tight hug. This was the second time I was hugging her today, and it was worth it.
"I promise you are going to be proud of the woman I have become. Trust me on that." I promised her.
"Alright now. I know your brother must have ruined everything with his gothic ideas, but it doesn't mean you can't salvage anything. Even if it means ensuring the food is great, please show him that he can't deter you."
I gazed at my mother with dotting eyes. How could one woman care about me so much? This was more than I wished for and I was resolute on making her proud.
"Yes, mother." I kissed her on the cheeks.
Taking my mother's advice, I was able to take charge of the planning of the event. Thankfully, the changes my brother had made were limited to the decorations of the ballroom. I let him rain out all of his silliness there. There was so much about preparing for an event that he did not know about.
I met with the head maid to confirm the lineup of activities for the party and I was annoyed to be informed that my brother had chosen to make the event a closed one. My mother wanted a big party that other members of the park could attend. We had sent out invites to the entire park, asking that everyone attend Luna's birthday, but my brother had asked that they make it open to only noblemen. On a normal day, his ideas would have to be approved by my mother, but since he was set to be the next Alpha, everyone treated him like he was the Alpha.
I knew I had to do something to quell him and formed a plan in my head on how to deal with him.
After ensuring, that the ballroom was not as terrifying as my brother wanted it to be with the horrendous changes he had made, I went into my room to prepare for what I assumed to be my mother's last birthday.
My mother had the older maids help her dress and get ready for the party. I had given them instructions and I knew it would be followed through. I doubt my brother would try to make any changes to her dress since my mother would be there herself.
I took my time in getting myself ready for the party. I needed to look my best. Yes, this was my mother's birthday, but my brother had turned it into a battleground and I was willing to win this war. Looking good was a prerequisite for me to win this war.
When it was time for the party to start, I went to my mother's room and my mouth dropped on seeing my mom. Mom was dressed in the most beautiful flowing dress ever. It was a long white dress made from the finest material. I had personally picked the material from the park's most trusted merchant to ascertain its quality. The royal dressmaker had been given the assignment of making mom's dress and I must say that she did not disappoint. Mom looked so beautiful in the dress that tears sprang to my eyes.
"You look so beautiful, Mom," I said to her, trying that contain my joy.
She smiled confidently as she looked at herself in the full-length mirror. "You made a good choice darling."
Mother's eyes rested on me for a while, and she said, "But you look so good. You seem to be all out to show the world your beauty tonight."
I blushed while bowing my head. I had already gone all out for war. If I began to execute the plans I had in my head, there was no going back for me.
"Yes, mom. But I don't want you to think that I am trying to take your shine away from you. Today is your day and I want you to shine so brightly. Enjoy yourself, Mom. Do that for me." I begged her.
Mom smiled so brightly at me. "You are already giving me all the fun in the world." She reached her hands and rubbed my cheeks. "Proving yourself would be the most interesting thing for me to watch."
My eyes glowed with pride. This was more than an urging. Mother desperately wanted me to show the world who I was. She needed me to level the playing field against my brother. I was just as good as he was. If not better. I owed it to myself and then my mother to let my light shine.
"Let's get going." My mother urged.
"I am right behind you," I said, giving myself some time to collect myself.
Two maids were by her side and helped her walk out of the room. They were there to guide her so that she wouldn't fall off.
I stood in that room trying to collect myself and finally, I was able to calm my breathing. I knew that I could not go out of this room feeling and looking pale. I had to bring my A-game to the war.
Just as I calmed myself down, I could hear the loud cheering from the ballroom. Mother had arrived there. She was being welcomed.
Traditionally, the celebration of a royal birthday usually had the celebrant going into the hall last. But today, I was going to go against the status quo.
