Chapter 5

*Kol's POV* Mother looked extremely beautiful in her dress. I had to commend the dressmaker. She always made my mother look so good with her dresses. The material was beautiful and kept the eyes of everyone in the ballroom on her. I smiled at her and she smiled back at me. Everyone kept on cheering at her until she took her seat beside me. "You look so beautiful, mother," I commented, happy that my mother was as beautiful and charming as she had always been. "Thank you, son." Mother said. "You know, your sister made all the selections. She is such a smart and wise girl." My head threatened to explode in anger at my mother's words. My mother had yet to say a word about my choice of decorations in the ballroom and she was already singing praises over my sister who was absent right now. I wondered where my sister could be when the announcer at the door announced her coming. In a not-so-confident voice, the announcer announced the entrance of my sister. "And just coming in, the Princess of the Fire Park, Princess Sahara Rosenbaum." My eyes left my mother and shot straight at the door. There, my sister was, standing with her head held high, her shoulders laid back, and her back straight. She had the confidence of a gazelle and the countenance of a lioness. Something in her spoke war. There was a dominance about her and I hate to admit it, but it suited her well. Sahara knew how to draw the necessary attention and she was doing it just now. She walked slowly, basking in the attention of everyone in the room. Men of noble blood looked at her with thirst. If this was not a noble gathering, they would have rushed her like a piece of meat. The women however were filled with envy and anger. Only a few appreciated her boldness and confidence. I was banking on the silent competition between women to deal with my sister later on. My sister arrived at the table where my mother and I were seated. If looks could burn, then my gaze was enough to burn off my sister to ashes. "Hello, brother." She smiled icily at me. I was temporally paralyzed by my sister's guts. Yes, she had guts, but she was taking this to a whole new level. A level that I was willing to meet her at. To my surprise, my mother smiled brightly at my sister, rubbing her hand, and declared the party started. I was boiling with anger, but could not express it. This was a noble gathering and I had to show my fellow noblemen that I was more worthy of the title of Alpha. Despite being named as the next Alpha, I knew that I wasn't yet the Alpha and if someone supposedly better than I stepped forward, then I could lose my position. I was not ready to let that happen. I held myself back and watched as the party began to flow. This was a war, and if letting my sister win one battle wot enable me to win the entire war, then I was willing to play games. *Sahara's POV* I could feel my brother's gaze on me and it was filled with fury. He hid his anger so well from the group of noblemen here, but I knew him too well. We are twins. We have lived together our whole lives. I know more about him than anyone else. If my brother cared more about me, then I could refer to him as my second half. Knowing that we were conflicting ideas apart, I could not call him that. My eyes stayed on my mother for a minute longer and I was so happy she was helping me play this game. She was looking around, enjoying the company of everyone who had come to party with her. I was proud of the last-minute changes I had made in the ballroom. The place no longer looked like a goth house though it held the major themes my brother wanted. "Where is everyone?" Mother asked with her eyes darting around the room. My eyes twinkled in delight as I saw the perfect opportunity to show the world what a tyrant my brother was. At that moment, protests from the other members of the park who were not allowed to come into the castle began to drift into the ballroom. Due to the Alpha blood in us, we could hear them loud and clear. "Mom, Kol canceled the invites to other members of the park. Somehow, he has managed to make your party about him." I said to my mother while ignoring my brother's eyes completely. "Mom, that is not completely true." My brother tried to defend himself. "This is a highly royal event and I thought it wise to make it as sacred as possible. If we allow everyone to come in here and celebrate, the party will cease to be a royal one." "But we all know I treat people equally." Mother said without trying to be discreet at all. "If I say I want the rest of the park at my party, then I want the rest of the park at my party. How would you make a great Alpha if you can't take everyone along and listen to instructions?" Kol's face was ashen with shame. I did not expect that Mother would be this harsh towards him, but I was enjoying what I was watching. I had deliberately kept this part of the changes Kol had made away from Mother while I drafted my plan. Now, it was paying off. As soon as I had heard that Kol had made the party open to only werewolves of noble birth, I had sent a maid to inform the rest of the park that the castle ground was open to them. I knew that with the right protests, mother would hear them and Kol would be in for trouble. I moved my eyes from Kol to Mother, watching as the both of them shot heavy looks at each other. Kol was trying to get his mother to respect him as the Alpha. Mother however was not ready to back down from a cub she had birthed herself. Before I could guess what was on Mother's mind, she stood up and without the aid of the maids, walked briskly to the castle doors. The protests from the other werewolves were louder now. Mother ordered for the doors to be opened and the werewolves were welcomed into the castle. It was a sight to behold. Some ladies from the park bowed at me as they walked into the castle. No one accorded Kol the amount of respect they accorded Mother and me. When they were all done coming in, Mother took one look at us and returned to the ballroom with the help of the two maids. As soon as Mother was out of my sight, my brother walked up to me and frowned. "Have you seen what you have done? I hope you feel better now.," I looked him in the eyes and smiled. His gray eyes were hard and cold and I knew just how to turn them into liquid. "No, I am not happy. I won't be happy until someone better than you replaces you as Alpha." The look in my brother's eyes at that moment was priceless.
