ONE: Shattered Under the Moon
LYRA POV
"Lyra Mercer, I reject you as my mate.
The words tore through me like a claw across my chest. I stood rooted to the spot in the middle of the clearing while the full moon hung overhead, a silent and cruel witness to my humiliation.
Hundreds of wolves from the Ravenhill Pack surrounded me with wide eyes, whispers already starting.
My wolf whimpered inside me, curling up in pain as the mate bond that had burned so bright just minutes ago now twisted into something sharp and broken.
I couldn't speak. My throat constricted and for a moment, it felt as though invisible hands were choking the words before they could leave my lips.
The cool night air carried the scent of pine and wild earth, but it mixed with the sharp smell of shock from the crowd.
I stared at Magnus Draven, the Alpha of Ravenhill, the man my wolf had called mine only moments before.
His dark hair fell across his forehead and those piercing blue eyes that had looked at me with such hunger now held something cold and distant.
Just a short while ago, everything had been different, the mating ceremony had begun under the silver light of the full moon. The pack had gathered in the sacred clearing, howls rising into the night as wolves celebrated the bonds forming that night.
I had stood near the edge, my simple white dress brushing against my legs, heart beating fast.
As an omega, I never expected much but when my eyes met Magnus's across the firelit space, the bond slammed into us both.
My wolf leaped with joy inside my mind. Mate! He's ours! The bond snapped into place with breathtaking force, sending a shiver through my body and leaving my knees trembling.
Magnus's gaze snapped to mine. His broad shoulders tensed and I saw the exact moment the bond hit him. His blue eyes glowed with that alpha power and he started walking toward me, pushing through the crowd like nothing else mattered.
"Lyra," he had growled low, his voice rough with need.
He reached me in seconds, his big hand touching my face gently. "It's you, the moon chose you for me."
I had smiled up at him, my silver-gray eyes meeting his.
"Magnus... I feel it too. So strong."
He was overwhelmed, his lips crashed down on mine in front of everyone, hungry and claiming.
The pack erupted into cheers, several wolves throwing back their heads and howling in approval.
His scent wrapped around me-dark woods, strength and something purely alpha that made my wolf spin with happiness.
We slipped away from the main fire to a softer spot under the trees, where the moonlight filtered through the leaves like a blessing.
There, under that full moon, we gave in completely. Magnus's hands were gentle at first, then urgent. He lifted me against him, his tall, powerful body pressing close.
"You're mine," he whispered against my neck, his breath hot. "My mate, my Lyra."
I wrapped my arms around his neck, fingers in his dark hair.
"And you're mine, Alpha."
Our wolves danced together in that moment, the bond glowing warm and bright between us.
We made love with the kind of passion that only fated mates know, skin against skin, soft moans mixing with the distant howls of the pack. Every touch felt right, every kiss sealed something ancient and beautiful. I had never felt so complete.
Now, that memory shattered as Magnus stood before the entire pack again. He cleared his throat, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Lyra Mercer is a weak omega," Magnus said coldly. "She is unfit to stand beside me as the Luna of Ravenhill Pack. The Moon Goddess may have marked her as my mate, but a mate is not always worthy of a throne. This pack needs strength, leadership and power, not weakness."
Gasps rippled through the crowd and I finally found my voice, though it came out small and broken.
"Magnus... what are you saying? We just-"
"Silence," he cut me off, his alpha tone heavy with command. My wolf wanted to submit, but my heart screamed in pain. "I choose Selene Hargrove as my mate and future Luna."
Selene stepped forward from the crowd, her golden hair shining under the moon, green eyes triumphant. She placed a hand on Magnus's arm, smiling softly at him.
"Thank you, Alpha. I will stand strong by your side."
The pack broke into murmuring, while some wolves nodded in agreement, others looked confused. I heard whispers cutting through the night air.
"Weak omega... she was never good enough..."
"Alpha made the right choice. Selene has beta blood."
"Look at her standing there, all shocked and pathetic."
Hot tears welled up in my eyes, but I blinked them back hard, I wouldn't cry in front of them. My legs felt shaky, but I forced myself to stand tall, my long midnight-black hair falling over my shoulders like a shield.
The crescent-shaped Mooncrest mark beneath my collarbone tingled strangely, but I ignored it.
"Magnus," I said, my voice louder this time, though it trembled. "You felt the bond, I know you did. We were together under the moon, how can you throw that away? How can you reject me like this... in front of everyone?"
He looked at me and for a split second, I saw something flicker in his blue eyes-pain, maybe regret but it vanished quickly behind his alpha mask.
"Feelings don't run a pack Lyra, I have responsibilities. Selene understands that well. She's strong and she'll help me lead."
Selene lifted her chin, her elegant dress hugging her figure. "Lyra, I'm sorry it had to be this way but the pack comes first. You know that, don't you?"
I wanted to scream at her but instead turned back to Magnus.
"Is this really what you want? To break the bond? To break me?"
The crowd grew louder, a few of Magnus's close warriors stepped closer, as if ready to drag me away if I caused more trouble.
One of them, a big man with storm-gray eyes, Commander Owen Pierce, looked at me with something like sorrow but he stayed silent.
Magnus raised his hand and the pack quieted. "Lyra Mercer is no longer part of this ceremony, she will leave Ravenhill territory by morning."
My wolf howled inside me, a sound full of hurt and confusion. The mate bond, still fresh and raw, pulled painfully, like a rope being yanked taut.
I could smell Magnus's scent mixed with mine from our time together and it made everything worse. How could the same man who had held me so tenderly now speak these cruel words?
I took a step forward, my silver-gray eyes locking onto his.
"You can't just erase what happened Magnus, the moon doesn't lie."
Magnus's broad shoulders tensed, his jaw clenched tight. I saw his fists ball at his sides, as if fighting something inside himself.
"Enough Lyra, go before I make this harder for you."
My heart lurched to a stop and the world around me faded into silence. I glanced around at the faces I had grown up with, wolves who had shared meals, runs under the moon and pack life. Now they looked at me with pity or disgust.
One young she-wolf whispered loudly to her friend, "I always knew omegas like her dreamed too big."
Another voice, an older male, called out,
"Alpha Draven knows best! Ravenhill needs real strength!"
Selene leaned closer to Magnus and said softly, but loud enough for me to hear, "Let me handle this, my Alpha. She'll understand in time."
Magnus nodded once, his piercing gaze still on me.
"You have until dawn, Lyra. Take what you need, leave and do not come back."
The pain in my chest grew so sharp I pressed a hand there, right over the spot where the mate bond felt like it was snapping.
My wolf thrashed, wanting to shift, to run to him, to make him remember the way we had fit together under the moon but I held her back. I wouldn't beg, not here, not like this.
I lifted my head, meeting his eyes one last time.
"I hope you never forget what you did tonight, Magnus Draven. The moon saw everything."
With that, I turned away from him, from Selene, from the whole pack.
My bare feet moved across the cool grass as whispers followed me like shadows. The night air felt colder now, the beautiful full moon mocking me from above.
Every step away from Magnus sent another wave of pain through the fading bond but deep down, something else stirred-a tiny spark I didn't understand yet.
As I walked into the darkness at the edge of the clearing, carrying only the small bag I had brought for the ceremony, the weight of what had just happened pressed down on me.
I was rejected, cast out and heartbroken.
The trees swallowed me as I left Ravenhill behind, the howls of celebration starting up again behind me for Magnus and Selene.
But my story was only beginning…
