When we reach the border the car comes to an abrupt stop, Elijah climbs out and walks to the front of the vehicle and is conversing with The Crimson Shadows border patrol. I try to make out what they are saying, but it is no good. The conversation seems to drag on for hours before Elijah turns and makes his way to my door before opening it and helping me out of the car.
“What’s going on?” I ask Elijah with concern written all over my face.
“I have to stay here; I can’t cross the border without an invitation” his face was filled with worry and concern. He takes my head in both of his hands “take care of the pack. I will stay right here. If you need me get Emmet to mind link me. I will not hesitate to jump across that border to ensure your safe.”
“I can’t go without you” tears starting to fill in my eyes as I remembered how distant I’ve been with him this past week. This could be the last time I see him again. I can’t bear to think of losing him.
“Ellie, I will be right here, I will not leave until I know my pack and you are safe.” He kisses my forehead before pulling me to the car behind his. He opens the door and picks me up to put me inside. I kick and scream not wanting to leave him but my fists do no damage to his strong, alpha form.
As soon as the door is closed the car pulls away, going around his SUV that stays stationary. I look out the window not able to take my eyes off of him as tears fall down my face. His figure gradually becomes smaller in the distance as I see he is still watching the car leave him at the border.
The funeral was beautiful; so many people came to say a final farewell to my mother. I sat as far away from my father as I could manage. I did not want to see him right now. Hunter was also nowhere to be seen. We walked slowly out of the pack house and to the garage where all of the SUV’s had been parked, it was time for the blue moon pack members to leave and I didn’t feel right staying here without them. Emmet pulled me into a big bear hug and whispered in my ear “Stay strong Ellie. If you need me just call.” A small, sympathetic smile creped on my face as we let each other go, suddenly a loud growl could be heard from behind us, I swirled round and there stood a furious Hunter, his eyebrows had become one with a frown on his ferocious face and his canines started to extend looking at us, Emmet’s grip on me tightened as he pulled me behind him in one quick move, he stood in a protective stance in front of me and I could see he was starting to shift, not a second later Cameron was at his side defending me from Hunter.
“MINE!” Hunter growled in alpha tone.
A large group was now surrounding us as Emmet and Cameron both looked at each other in shock then turned to face me. Then it hit me. The smell of fresh roses filled my nostrils and my body tingled and relaxed as I locked eyes onto Hunter. My wolf growled in a defensive stance in my mind “Mate” she said in anger. My face turned from lust to pure rage, as Hunter noticed the change in my expression he started to walk towards me. As if I couldn’t say it fast enough I stood straight and spoke in a tone that could be heard for miles, stopping Hunter in his tracks. “I, Eleanor Hale, Rogue from the Crimson Shadow pack, reject you Hunter Green as my alpha and mate. Do you accept this rejection?” His frown long gone and pain crossing his face before he replied with anger and sadness “I do not accept your rejection, Mate.”
His eyes suddenly darted to Emmet and Cameron “Leave or you won’t live another second to regret it.” Emmet let out a warning growl in return then looked at me for advice. I nodded my head to tell him it was time to go and that I would be ok. With understanding he did a slight nod back before turning and climbing into one of the cars. They left in an instant as Hunter grabbed my arm and yanked me into the Pack House before picking me up over his shoulder and carrying me towards his office. My screams could be heard by everyone, as we passed people I seen them either look down or gaze at me with sadness. My kicks and slaps on him weren’t doing me much luck and before I knew it I was chucked to the ground as he slammed the door behind us and started to pace back and forth combing his hand through his hair.
I looked up at him worry clear on my face as I pulled myself up and stood leaning on the far wall.
“f**k!” he screamed while continuing to pace back and forth in front of the door.
I stood frozen not knowing what to do “Hunter…” I spoke softly. I was not scared of him. His blue eyes locked on mine as he stopped instantly but made no move to come closer. Sadness was clear all over his face.
“This isn’t right, this isn’t how it was meant to be” he shook his head I could hear his voice starting to break.
“Hunter we can’t be mates. I won’t accept you. I can’t. What you did-…” I couldn’t finish my sentence as he turned and smashed his fist through a wall behind him making me jump.
I watched his every move closely as I seen his breathing start to go back to normal. He turned to look at me once more, his eyes black as a single tear rolled down his face. He turned on his heal and swung his office door open leaving me in the room alone as he disappeared down the hall towards the stairs. I could feel how hurt he was through the mate bond and I sunk to the floor feeling exhausted, I rested my head on the wall and brought my knees up to my chest thinking about what this meant and how this wasn’t going to be as easy as I originally planned.
I stood and made my way out of the pack house to find Hunter. If anyone knew him and knew what he needed right now it was me! We grew up together and I knew more about him than his parents probably do. I wouldn’t be his mate. But it hurt me to see him hurt. I stood on the porch and seen Hunter slumped on the steps with his head in his hands. His shirt was wet with sweat and his tie was hanging loosely around his neck. When he looked up at me and our eyes locked I could see nothing but hurt and pain in his eyes. We were broken from our eye contact by a loud and painful howl coming from a few miles away, it was filled with anger and pain and it made both of us shudder with fear, and I knew as soon as it had a reaction on Hunter. I knew whose howl it was.

Elijah’s POV
I was pacing back and forth as the border patrol team continued to stare at me watching my every move, something was wrong I could feel it. At some point the border defence team had doubled and there now stood eight men all watching to make sure I didn’t pass. I scowled at them which made them all look at their feet in response. It was good to know I had that response from wolves that weren’t even in my pack. Shane sensed I was on edge as he came to stand beside me, he placed a hand on my shoulder but my head darted to his and a warning growl left my throat, he instantly backed off which made the border patrol team laugh in response, that was until my glare turned back to them and another growl, more dominant and demanding left my lips as my canines started to extend. I could see them all bow their heads once more and shiver with fear.
“What is taking so long? The funeral finished twenty minutes ago!” I looked at my watch and then continued to pace back and forth.
“I’m sure they are just saying their goodbyes to Ellie, Alpha” Shane said while bowing his head feeling my irritation.
I calmed instantly thinking about Ellie and how well her and my pack has bonded since she has been with us. I then saw the SUV’s coming towards us from a distance; they were driving fast, too fast. They all crossed the border when Emmet and Cameron jumped out of the final car running to my side, they looked scared, and out of breath. My anger instantly increased, something happened.
“Alpha, it’s Ellie-…” Cameron said while trying to catch his breath.
“What?! What about her? Is she ok? Is she safe?” my tone was far from calm, I demanded answers.
“She is Alpha Hunter’s mate. She rejected him and he was so angry, he didn’t accept her rejection. He demanded we left and she told us it was ok to leave but as we were leaving he… he was dragging her into the house!” Emmet’s voice was full of panic which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand. My wolf was enraged I could feel him slowly taking control ‘Let’s kill the fucker’ he screamed in my head.
Without taking a second to think I shifted and darted forward, all of the border patrol stood frozen in fear at the sheer size of Konan, my wolf. Five of my pack members stood in front of me trying to hold me back, as if in understanding the eight border patrol men shifted and helped my pack hold me down, knowing that if I crossed onto their land, nothing would stop me killing everything in my path. Shane quickly ran to the car and pulled out a syringe and injected it into my neck forcing me to lose some strength but not enough to stop me from fighting, I tore them all off me one by one and stood before the border and let out an ear screeching howl which caused everyone around me to crouch to the ground holding onto their ears in pain. I needed her. Only her.
As I was about to make my way to the tree line, her scent filled my nose, my wolf eyes darted to all directions waiting to see her face. To know she is ok. Hunter emerged from the tree line holding onto Eleanor’s necklace that I had gifted her causing my wolf to let out a ferocious growl.
“Relax. Eleanor is fine.” Hunter stood looking at me surrounded by about twenty guards. I quickly shifted so that we could talk in person. Shane handed me a pair of joggers which hung low on my waist. I stood up straight and allowed my alpha aura to radiate from my skin as a warning that I am not afraid of him.
He stood his ground and allowed his aura to radiate also. His was nowhere near as powerful as mine but this kid had guts. “Where is she? I need to speak to her.” My voice was filled with anger and concern. Why did he have her necklace?
“She is at the pack house. Her pack house. Her home where she belongs-…” I couldn’t help but scoff and roll my eyes at this fool. So now he cares about her? “A lot has happened today. She needs to rest. I can see you care for her so I will allow you to visit in a few days. But only if she agrees to it.” His words cut deep. Who does he think he is?
“Fine. But if she is not ok because of you, god help me you will not live to tell the story.” He looked at me with shock not knowing how to take my threat.
He walked closer to me, almost close enough for me to grab hold of him and kill him but still on his side of the border “Ellie may not want me as her mate. But I am her friend and I do care for her. So unless you want to start a war right here, right now I suggest you turn around and leave. I will be in touch in a few days.” He spoke with such arrogance it infuriated me.
I allowed my canines to extend as I went to snap at him causing him to jump back, I let out a loud laugh and turned to walk away, knowing I just proved to his pack that he is scared of me. I climbed into my car and drove back to my land. All I could think about was Ellie. I needed her to be safe, please moon goddess keep her safe for me.
