Chapter 2: Hospital Visits and Devastation

1450 Words
We arrived at the hospital and I immediately ran in, Angie close behind me. On the way in I saw dozens of other people there as well but there was one lady who had caught my eye for about two seconds she was elderly and weeping in the corner. Then I spotted who I needed, the nurse at the reception desk. "I need to talk to Alicia!" I said rushed even though I was trying to sound calm.  "What for?" the receptionist asked politely.  "She said that she had information about my dad that she couldn't share over the phone. Please?! I need to see if my dad is okay!" I pleaded with her.  "Of course, I'll let her know you're here right away." she said calmly. "What is your name?"  "Georgia Evans" I said panicked.  She picked up the phone. " Dr. Alicia Brown to the front desk for Georgia Evans please. Dr. Alicia Brown to the front desk." While she did Angie rubbed comforting circles on my back to say that she was her for me without using words.  Within seconds a woman broke through I didn't pay any attention to her features I was way too anxious to hear what was going on with my dad. I immediately walked over to her. "What is wrong with my dad??" I immediately asked. "Georgia Evans?" she questioned. I nodded my head furiously "Yes please I need to see my dad!" "Follow me." she said. Unfortunately Angie had to stay back since she wasn't family.  The doctor and I entered the doors to the hall and walked straight back to the very last door in the hall. I immediately cursed the universe for making the walk so far as we headed there. It was as if the reason why it was back so far was to build up my anxiety and the suspense that already had so much of.  As I got closer to the room I took a breath of relief when I heard a consistent beep coming from the heart rate machine but then as I walked in I saw the most horrific sight. When I saw my dad I immediately froze on the spot outside the door. All I could see was the blood and bruises that were all over my dad. I soon recognized that he had a neck brace and a cast on his left arm. You could see that a couple of his ribs were broken as well.  When I finally broke the horrific trance I was in I stepped into the room and that's when I heard the last sound I wanted to hear in this situation. The consistent beep I heard not even ten seconds ago changed to one long high pitched sound. "He's coding!" Dr. Alicia yelled running in and pushing the code button. Nurses and other doctors immediately started piling in. One of them guiding me out to the hall asking to go back out to the waiting room.  I reluctantly went back to the waiting room with a stoic look on my face. I had no emotion I was in shock everything seemed surreal everything moving in slow motion. When I walked back through the doors at the end of the hall and into the waiting room Angie immediately rushed over to me.  "Georgia what's going on is everything okay?.." I knew she was saying things to me asking me questions but I was so in shock I had the inability to answer her I couldn't even move my mouth my face was frozen and all I could hear was my own heartbeat in my ears.  A half hour later Dr. Alicia came out with sweat on her face and asked to pull me into a quiet room. After she said that I told Angie she could go home, she was reluctant but did leave. I knew what Dr. Alicia said couldn't mean anything good. As we walked back I finally took time to look at her; she had dirty blonde hair pulled back in a pony tail, dark purple colored scrubs on and black glasses.  After we were both sat down she explained to me what had happened. My dad had been in a car accident. Some i***t was driving on the wrong side of the road and my dad never noticed because he had just helped a woman jump her car on the side of the road. He pulled off the shoulder and two seconds later he was in a head on collision. After hearing this I broke down bursting into tears of course that would be how my dad died. Helping someone, he truly was the most kind-hearted person I knew.  She then explained that he was still alive but in rough shape when he arrived as one of his lungs had collapsed. He had me in his phone as his emergency contact in his phone. Which is how the doctor knew my name and why she had his phone when she called me. She later explained that he died because he lost too much blood too fast because all of the blood was rushing to his lung that had collapsed and the heart was working too fast to provide good circulation to the rest of his body. She then expressed her deepest condolences to me saying she did everything she could and she was sorry for my loss. After a bit of silence that acted as a break in the conversation, Alicia spoke again, "The woman he stopped to help is here. She would like to come in and meet you and apologize. We completely understand if this is too soon but if not may we bring her in?" I nodded. I wanted to meet the woman and give her the chance to have closure even if it was with me.  The woman stepped in and I realized it was the same elderly woman that had caught my eye out in the waiting room. She had hair so white it almost appeared silver and she was dressed in teal khakis with a mint green blouse and a yellow sweater to wear over her shirt. Her outfit was so bright it was a stark contrast to the conversation we were about to have. "I am so sorry if I had of just ditched my old rusty car like my family pleaded me to, this would have never happened." she sobbed. I shook my head and walked over to her "Please don't apologize this was not your fault. That was just the kind of man my dad was he would always do what he could to help anyone and everyone, including strangers. Besides it is not your fault a drunk man was driving on the wrong side of the road." I reasoned with tears streaming down my face. The woman walked over and hugged me "I'm so sorry this happened darling. If there is anything and I mean anything that I can do please let me know." She handed me a piece of paper that had her name and number on it. I nodded my head thanking her for her kind offer. Not knowing what else to say she left the room, leaving me to my thoughts. Ever since second grade, after my mom and dad got a divorce, it was just me and my dad. He had been there for everything I did. From the recitals I had as a kid, to the choir concerts I had up til now. My horrid mother was never there for any of it which I was glad of. Most would have been disappointed when their mother didn't show up but not me. Even as a kid I never wanted to see that woman's face again. That's when it hit me.  I'm 17, still a minor where am I going to go??  My dad never had any relatives?  I thought to myself.  Dr. Alicia entered the room with another woman. Her look screamed professional with her hair puled back, wearing black slacks with a navy blue dress shirt tucked in to her gold-buckled belt under a black blazer. She also was was wearing a gold necklace and two gold bangles. "This is a social worker even though you're quite older than most kids she deals with, you are still a minor. So, she is going to handle your case take as much time as you need." Dr. Alicia explained.  The social worker sat down. "It appears as though your dad no longer has any relatives living?" she questioned I nodded confirming it. "So since that is the case, because you are a minor, you will be living with your...."  My heart froze.  As if things couldn't get any worse. I now had to move towns and live with no escape from the she-devil herself. My mother.
