"Join hands."

The elder’s command rang through the hall, echoing in Irwin’s ears. Her body tensed, knowing what was coming next. Her hands felt clammy as she slowly raised them, extending her palm toward Dorian.

For the first time, Dorian’s eyes locked onto hers. There was something there, something beyond the cold mask he always wore. But it was fleeting, and before she could make sense of it, he took her hand

The moment their skin touched, it was like lightning struck.

Irwin gasped softly, her whole body jolting as a surge of energy shot through her. Her eyes widened, and she instinctively tightened her grip on his hand. It was like a wildfire spreading through her veins, intense and overwhelming.

The Survival
IRWIN'S POV “Is this really happening or am I just dreaming?” I asked, barely hearing my own voice over the wind. It howled through the trees like a warning. My feet refused to move as I stared at the heavy iron gates in front of me—tall and cold, guarding the Shadowclaw compound like a monster that didn’t want me in. Cain stood next to me. He was the Shadowclaw gatekeeper and he had clearly been waiting for me. His face turned toward me, and his lips twisted—somewhere between a smirk and irritation. “Why do you ask questions you already know the answers to?” My throat tightened. The night breeze pushed into my cloak, making me shiver. But the real cold? It wasn’t from outside. It was from inside me. “But why me? Why did Shadowclaw choose me for this?” I asked, my voice more like a whisper. I wasn’t even sure I wanted an answer. Cain gave a short laugh. “Why not you?” His boots crunched the gravel as he stepped forward and pushed the gate open. The sound echoed in the quiet like a warning bell. “It’s not my job to know why the Alpha picked you, hybrid. But if I had to guess, I’d say it’s ‘cause you were the easiest choice.” He smirked again. That word—hybrid—felt like a slap. I’d heard it all my life. Half-human, half-wolf. Never fully one or the other. Never enough. And now, here I was, about to be dragged deeper into a world I didn’t belong to. I swallowed hard and followed Cain past the gates. “Is this really just about the marriage alliance? Or is there something else going on?” Cain didn’t even look at me. His voice was hard. “You think you’re special? This is about survival. The pack has to protect its future, and you’re just the key to that. Nothing more, nothing less… And for the rest of your questions, ask the council.” My hands balled into fists by my sides. “Doesn’t it bother you?” I asked, trying to hold back my anger. “Marrying someone off like this… just for power?” Cain let out a dry, cruel laugh. “Bother me? Why would it? That’s how the world works, Lady Irwin. Power comes before everything. Even love.” We kept walking. Neither of us said a word. The compound grew darker the further we went. The fortress looked like it was closing in on me, like a cage made of stone and silence. I could feel eyes on me. Wolves hidden in the shadows, watching. Judging. “Do they all hate me that much?” I asked quietly. “Yes,” Cain replied without a pause. “What did you expect?” The honesty stung more than anything else. “Is it because I’m a hybrid?” “That, and because you’re an outsider,” Cain said. “You don’t belong here. You never will.” My chest hurt from his words. “And you? Do you think I belong here?” Cain stopped and turned toward me. His eyes were cold and empty. “Are you seriously asking me that?” He leaned in closer, his voice low and full of disgust. “You’re here. That’s all that matters. But if you think you’ll fit in... you’re fooling yourself.” That hit harder than I thought it would. It was too much. Too raw. We finally reached the council hall. The giant wooden doors stood tall and proud. My stomach twisted into knots. I could barely breathe. Cain shoved the door open. The heavy wood creaked like it didn’t want me there. Inside, five figures sat in a half-circle around a thick wooden table. All eyes turned toward me. Cold. Judging. Calculating. The woman in the center, Lady Gwen, spoke first. “You’re the one who’s supposed to marry into our pack?” Her voice was sharp, cutting through everything. I made myself meet her gaze. “Yes. I am.” She tilted her head slightly. “And why do you think you were chosen, hybrid?” I felt my heart beat faster. I didn’t want to show fear. “I don’t know,” I answered honestly. “Maybe you can tell me?” Her lips curled into a cold smile. “Bold. That’s a start.” She glanced at the others. “But boldness alone won’t save you here, lady.” “Is survival the only thing that matters to you?” I asked, trying to stay calm. “In this world? Yes,” Gwen said. She sighed under her breath. “A hybrid with a lot of nerve,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. Another elder leaned forward. He had grey hair and a deep scar on his face. “Do you think you can survive among us, girl?” “I’ve survived worse,” I told him, keeping my voice firm. He let out a low chuckle. “Is that right? What makes you think you can handle pack politics? You’ve always lived on the outside.” “And that’s exactly why I can handle it,” I said. “I know what it feels like to be rejected. To fight for every piece of respect. I’ve been doing that my whole life.” They looked at each other, exchanging quiet looks. I felt their doubt. But I also saw something else. Curiosity. Cain stood beside me, arms crossed, quiet. Watching. Waiting. “What about loyalty?” Gwen asked suddenly. “Do you even understand what that means, hybrid? Or do you plan to betray us when it benefits you?” I stood straight. “I know loyalty. I have no one else to be loyal to.” Gwen narrowed her eyes. “No one? What about your human side? Think it’ll just vanish?” “They already have,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. The silence in the room got heavy. Thicker. Every word I spoke felt like a test. As they kept talking, I started to notice something. The way they looked at each other. Like they were hiding something. Like this was more than just a marriage talk. “Why do I feel like there’s more to this?” I asked, my voice low. “Why does it feel like I’m being tested for something else?” Cain shifted, but the council didn’t answer right away. Gwen smiled again, that cold, knowing smile. “You’re smart. Good. You’ll need that to survive here.” I felt my heartbeat pick up. “Survive what, exactly?” The scarred elder leaned back, eyes shining like he knew something I didn’t. “You think this is just about marriage, hybrid?” I felt a chill go through me. “Isn’t it?” Gwen shook her head slowly. “Marriage is only a piece of the puzzle. The real question is... what else are you willing to do for this pack?” I licked my dry lips. “What else is there?” Gwen’s smile widened. “You’ll find out soon enough. Just know… your loyalty will be tested. And not just to the Alpha.” I glanced at Cain. My eyes burned, but I refused to cry. Not here. He stayed still. Silent. Cold. “What aren’t you Shadowclaw people telling me?” I asked. “We have nothing else to say,” Cain muttered under his breath. “What happens if I fail your tests?” I asked, barely keeping my voice steady. Gwen’s eyes turned sharp. “Then you’ll die, hybrid. And trust me—I’ll enjoy doing it myself.” A cold wave ran down my back. I looked at Cain again. “What about you? Why are you really here? Just to make sure I don’t run away?” Cain finally met my eyes. There was something in his look—something I couldn’t name—but it disappeared too fast. “I’m here to make sure you live long enough to fulfill your purpose,” he said. My heart dropped. “And what exactly is that purpose?” Cain didn’t answer. He turned and walked away, leaving me standing there under the weight of the council’s eyes. “What is really happening?” I asked myself, trapped in silence.
