Chapter 11 Unification

816 Words
That was the last laugh I had for a while. I started getting huge. My back hurt and I couldn't see my feet, much less get up on my own. The doctor put me on bed rest. He said it was just a precaution because he didn't know enough about hybrid pregnancies. I only had two weeks to go, but I was miserable and cranky. Everyone took turns trying to entertain me, but I just snapped at them all. The worst part was Vadik. He was so afraid of hurting me or the baby he wouldn't even touch me. I understood his concerns. I was worried about the baby too, but I craved his touch. After about two weeks of snapping at anybody who even looked at me I realized what a jerk I was being. I apologized to everyone and they were all understanding. They said it's just the hormones talking. I was feeling much better and very energetic. I overheard Vadik yelling at his cousins for not cancelling the ball. I walked in to ask what ball? They all started making me comfortable, and scolding me for getting out of bed. I repeated my last question. What ball? I guess they were afraid my hormones would take over again, because they all answered at once. "The Unification Ball". I'm sure they could tell from my blank look I had no idea what they were talking about. So Vadik began to explain; "The werewolf packs were are all but extinct. Most werewolfs live in hiding in small families or as lone individuals. There lives can be very hard without the protection of a pack. The Petrov pack is the only true pack left and even our numbers are dwindling. I fear for our future if something isn't done. Most werewolves are like us, but some are killers and their deeds attract hunters. I've invited all the law abiding werewolves I could find to come to a Unification Ball. I also invited the hunters. I'm hoping we can form an alliance and learn to live in peace. It will also give the young people a chance to meet their mates. I don't expect it to be easy, I have to try. I know now is not a good time, but Isobel and Clara were in charge of cancelling all the preparations and it seemed to have slipped their minds. I didn't bring it up because I didn't want you to worry about anything.". I threw my arms around him in a vice like hug. I think that's a wonderful idea. You are such an amazing man. Please don't cancel. I bounced from home to home after my parents died. I wish I could have been surrounded by people who loved and protected me. I will be a good girl and not lift a finger, I promise. My husband gently brushed his lips across mine. I could feel my whole body tingle. The baby in my womb did a sommer sault. Vadik looked at me in awe and I couldn't help but throw my head back and laugh. So the Ball proceeded as planned. Guests started arriving the next evening. The entire family and all the staff were in an uproar with preparations. I stuck to my word and didn't lift a finger, but I did have my trusty spy. I had Nikki sneaking me information. We made a game of it. Come to find out he missed me as much as I missed him. Once the Ball was about to start I told him to run and get ready. On his way out he bumped into Vadik. He looked up with guilt, then shrugged his shoulders and ran out of the room. I tried to contain my laughter, but I couldn't hold it in any longer. I laughed so hard tears were streaming down my face. "Should I even ask what that was about". I shook my head no as I tried to subdue my laughter. Vadik came close and gave me a gentle kiss and said he would be in to check on me later. I smiled and shooed him to the party. Vadik wanted to introduce me as his Luna at the party. I felt so honored that I couldn't refuse. Once all the guests had arrived he carried me to the ballroom and introduced me. He told everyone present that I was not only his mate and Luna, but I was the last of the Royal blood line. All the guests started whispering in astonishment. Vadik carried me back to my room. Once he had me settled in bed he looked in my eyes like he was searching for something, then kissed me and went back to the party. My door started to open and I thought Vadik had forgotten something, but instead it was a face I hoped to never see again.
