The solo slayer
Afternoon, 4:00 p.m. The roads buzzed with traffic, the sharp blare of car horns echoing through the bustling environment. A young, muscular man strode through a construction site, a bag of freshly bought vegetables dangling from his hand. A terrified young woman suddenly sprinted toward him, her face pale with panic. She stumbled and fell at his feet, her breath ragged. Lifting her head, she locked eyes with him, desperation in her gaze. “Please, help me! They… they’ll kill me!” she cried, tears streaming down her face. From the direction she’d fled, a group of armed gangsters emerged, their guns glinting in the afternoon light. “Hey, big guy, hand over the woman, or we’ll kill you too,” one of them sneered, his voice dripping with menace. The young man fixed them with a piercing stare, his eyes cold and unyielding. “Really?” he said, his voice low and menacing, carrying a weight that chilled the air. The gangsters froze, their bravado crumbling as they met his gaze and heard his tone. Their bodies trembled, and their guns slipped from their hands, clattering to the ground. Fear etched itself across their faces. “Larkin…” one whispered, voice quivering. “It’s… him.” The woman, confused, scrambled to her feet and hid behind the man named Larkin, clutching his arm for safety. But one gangster, oblivious to the terror gripping his companions, raised his pistol and fired at Larkin. With a flick of his wrist, Larkin deflected the bullet with a pen, as effortlessly as swatting a fly. The gangsters’ eyes widened in shock, their fear spiking to new heights. “Hand over the girl, or you’ll pay for it!” they shouted, already turning to flee in a panic. Larkin turned to the woman, his sharp gaze softening as he took in her striking beauty. Her delicate features and wide, frightened eyes made his heart pound in his chest. For a moment, they stood frozen, staring at each other, the world fading around them. “Th-thank you for helping me,” she said, her voice soft and sweet, like a melody cutting through the chaos. Larkin averted his eyes, a faint blush creeping onto his cheeks. “You’re… welcome,” he murmured. Suddenly, the woman swayed and collapsed against him, weak from exhaustion and hunger. Larkin caught her gently, concern flickering across his face. Without hesitation, he scooped her into his arms and carried her to his nearby apartment, a modest 1 BHK flat. He laid her carefully on the bed and headed to the kitchen. The aroma of cooking vegetables and spices soon filled the air, warm and inviting. The woman stirred, waking in an unfamiliar place. Panic flashed in her eyes as she glanced around, her heart racing. Larkin entered the room, balancing two plates of steaming food—healthy vegetables and rice. “Relax, you’re safe here,” he said calmly, handing her a plate. She hesitated, then accepted it, her hunger outweighing her caution. “Thank you… again,” she said softly, digging into the meal. Her ravenous bites confirmed she hadn’t eaten in days. Larkin sat on a chair beside the bed, eating his own portion quietly. “What’s your name?” he asked between bites. “Siya,” she replied, her voice sweet and melodic, soothing his ears. “And yours?” “Larkin,” he said simply. Siya’s eyes widened, her fork pausing midair. “What? L-Larkin? As in… the Solo Slayer Larkin? The strongest man on Earth? The assassin who took down a president in Z+ security?” Her voice trembled with awe and disbelief. Larkin shrugged, his tone flat. “Yeah, that’s me. But I’m not an assassin anymore. I quit.” Suddenly, Siya dropped to her knees before him, tears welling in her eyes. “Please, help me! I’ll give you anything—my wealth, anything you want! I beg you!” Her voice broke as she pleaded, her face streaked with tears. “Hey, what are you doing? Get up!” Larkin said gently, crouching to her level. “What’s wrong?” “They… they want to kill me,” she sobbed. “They murdered my family, and now they’re after me.” Larkin stood, his expression softening. He sat beside her on the bed, wiping her tears with a careful hand. “It’s okay. Don’t cry. Calm down.” Siya took a shaky breath, steadying herself. “Who’s after you? And why?” Larkin asked, his voice calm but firm. “I… I don’t know his name,” she said, fear creeping back into her tone. “He’s a powerful underworld mafia boss. I’ve been running from him for a year.” “Why?” Larkin pressed. Siya hesitated, her eyes darting away. Whatever the reason, it was too heavy to share. “Okay,” Larkin said, respecting her silence. “You don’t have to tell me.” Suddenly, a grenade crashed through the window, rolling across the floor. Larkin reacted instantly, pulling Siya behind the bed as the explosion rocked the apartment. Dust and smoke filled the air, but they were unharmed. “They’re here for me,” Siya whispered, her body trembling as she clung to Larkin. “We need to get out!” Larkin placed a reassuring hand on her head. “Don’t worry. I’m here,” he said, his voice steady and warm. Siya looked up at him, a strange sense of safety washing over her. She nodded, trusting him. Four armed men burst through the door, guns raised. In a blur, Larkin grabbed a knife and dispatched them in a single, fluid motion, their bodies crumpling before they could react. He turned to a glass case on the wall, where a sleek, bluish sword gleamed. With a swift punch, he shattered the glass, seizing the weapon. Stepping outside, Larkin faced seven more mafia members, their guns blazing. He moved like a shadow, dodging and deflecting bullets with his sword in a display of superhuman skill. In one swift swing, he cut them down, their bodies falling before they could comprehend their fate. Siya watched from the doorway, her jaw dropping at his speed and precision. “So this is the power of the world’s strongest assassin,” she whispered, awestruck. “The Solo Slayer, Larkin.”
