I didn't know what to do. It was only a fourth way through the year and I'm heading to professor Lucas' office instead of lunch. I walk in and sit on his couch grabbing my book to read to get my head clear, but the words on the page didn't make sense and the thought of shock has taken over my mind that I can't read my book. I feel shaking and look to see the professor looking at me in worry. His mouth is moving but I don't hear any words. I close my eyes and take a second before opening them again to look at him.
"Are you okay?" He asks and I can finally hear his voice.
"Uh, yeah, sort of," I say slowly but not fully sure.
"Why aren't you at lunch?" He asked me. I see that he has food on his desk.
"Well, I don't really want to see anyone with things spreading fast around here," I tell him vaguely.
"What do you mean?"
I put my mouth in a thin line before I opened it to tell him.
"Draven broke up with me, but after I caught him cheating on me." I don't cry, I feel relieved. I had spent so much time with him I started to feel suffocated.
"I'm sorry." He moved to sit next to me. "Wouldn't you want time with your friends though?" To me, his question sounded stupid. They couldn't make me feel better when I had a place like this where I was able to zone out with potion books.
"Well I-." The girls came storming in.
"I told you she wouldn't be in the dorms," Gina told Allie.
"I would have gone there." Allie countered.
"Then you don't know her well enough to know that she isn't like you." Gina put her hands on her hips.
At that moment I saw everything move slowly. My two friends who should have been by my side hugging me and telling me that they were there for me were standing in the middle of the room arguing. The professor moved away from me and headed toward the door to give me privacy with my friends.
I sat there and waited for them to actually notice me. I wasn't going to get involved when I had things I needed to deal with. I decided to grab the book and have it the right way to tune them out.
After a bit, I felt the movement on the couch and both girls had stopped fighting.
"Lena we heard, are you okay?" Gina asked as she put her arm around my shoulders.
"First, what did you hear to see if it is actually what happened to me?" I needed to know the story Draven was telling people.
"That he decided he wanted to see other people and that you didn't handle it well." Allie chimed in.
"Nice to know he left out the part where I caught him kissing another girl and he then told me it was over," I tell them.
"Woah, I guess what they were whispering was true," Allie said quietly but loud enough for both Gina and me to hear. This caused both of us to look at each other and then at her.
"Allie, what are you talking about?" Gina spoke before me, but she also had the words I didn't.
"Well in my class level there have been talks about Draven going around with the girls in my level."
"Yet you never told Lena?" Again Gina had words and my throat had gone dry from shock.
"I just thought it was a rumor and didn't want to upset Lena."
"Makes a lot of sense," I say quietly.
"What does?" Gina asked.
"Why the past few weeks he's been gone a lot," I say to them. "I thought it was to give me some more space to not feel suffocated even though I never told him. I guess I wasn't what he was really looking for."
"Lena, don't cry." Allie wrapped her arms around me tightly.
"Allie she isn't crying." Gina pries her off of me. "Lena, why aren't you crying."
"I don't feel the need to cry." I tell them. It was the only way to explain it. "I do want to avoid the looks and whispers that will be going around. Since many of them will get worse the more that people talk and change things." I talk honestly.
"Where do you plan to spend your time?" Allie asked.
"Here mostly, the professor won't mind and I can get farther on my work." It was the plan I thought of right after Draven broke it off with me.
