Chapter 2

The weeks went by and I knew I was passing my potions class, but other classes I couldn't seem to understand. I understood what was supposed to happen, but I just couldn't understand it. My only joy was potions even with all the girls flirting and making it drag sometimes with personal questions. I'm not going to lie and say he wasn't good-looking but comments about his hair and how it hit the right point at his shoulders. Or the silky black it was. Or even how his eyes were the best color brown like milk chocolate. Who cares he was older than us and to him were students and that was all. I had gotten my list of grades to see where I was in the class. Finding out that all my classes except for potions were super low like I was failing them. They were hard for me to understand. The ideas were simple, the completion was a different story. I went to Professor Lucas' office. He was the only professor that didn't scare me. I knocked on the door. Then opened it. He was sitting at his desk looking over a book. He lifted his head. "Miss Russel what can I do for you?" I moved towards the desk and sat across from him. This was the first time I was ever in his office. He had so many books and the ingredients too. He had a couch that looked worn probably from the previous professor. "I have a question and you're the only one I feel I can ask." I felt so nervous. "Okay?" He looked more concerned than I felt. "I'm not doing well in my other classes. It's like I get it but I can't get the results. I'm wondering if you know how I can get the results. Potions are, so much easier." I moved my head down. "Okay, so you're asking me how to get better at other classes?" I looked up and nodded. He looked more relaxed. "When I went to school, potions weren't the easiest for me until I looked at it differently." My jaw dropped. "So don't worry, and talk to your other professors, they will try their best to get you to understand." "Thank you." I got up from the chair. "That's all?" He had the confused look again. "Yes." I went out the door and bumped into a girl who was going to walk in. I went to my room to look over my books again hoping that something would click. I read for hours and never made it to dinner. If I had a friend I know that I would have made it to eat, but I didn't allow myself to be open to others to make friends. Not sure what time I fell asleep with the books but I know it was the early morning. I look at the books still unsure of what I was missing when I understood. I changed into clothes I hadn't slept in and went walking around. It was still too early for anyone to be up, but I was hoping a sunrise would help me clear my mind. I walked out onto the grounds to take in the dewy morning air. It was peaceful without all the other students chattering. “Miss Russell, what are you doing up this early?” Professor Lucas asked. “Getting some thinking done. Hoping that everything from my other classes will finally make sense.” I told him. “I’m sure talking to your professors will do more good than hope.” “I know sir, I just don’t have a connection with those classes and I feel my professors know it, but I do plan on today asking them.” “You are still learning and they will be more helpful if you ask them now instead of later. I’m glad that you plan on asking now. Good luck.” He said as he went in another direction. I did as I said to the professor I had asked my others for help and they all agreed to help. I had set up a schedule that worked for me to get help every day of the week for a different class.
