I heard Maya's laugh before I saw her. It came from the small courtyard behind the residential building where someone had set up benches and a fire pit. Wolves liked gathering there when they had free time.
I rounded the corner and saw Maya sitting on one of the benches with Lila beside her. Both of them had their heads thrown back laughing at something.
"And then he tripped over his own feet," Lila was saying between giggles. "He just fell flat in the mud in front of everyone."
"No," Maya said.
"Yes! And he tried to play it off like he meant to do it, like falling into the mud was part of his plan."
