Chapter 5: Moonlit Promises

1040 Words
That night I wake to the hush of snow and the scent of pine. The cabin is dim, lit by moonlight filtering through frost-laced windows. I’m alone in the main room on a chair-bed near the crackling fire; the others are in the loft with extra blankets. Kael sits before the hearth in deep thought. There’s a half-finished mug of tea in his hand that he hasn’t touched for a long time. I sit up slowly, my hunger long since satisfied. The quiet night inspires confidence; after days together, I no longer panic when I see him shift between wolf and man. He looks up as I shuffle forward. Our eyes meet. The fierce pride in his amber gaze softens into something gentle, and a warm smile forms. “You’re awake,” he says softly. “The tea,” I say quietly, pointing to the cup. It’s cooling. “Are you alright?” Kael smiles again and motions for me to come closer. “Better now,” he replies, standing. I stand and move to join him by the fire. “I couldn’t sleep without seeing you. I’m glad you’re awake.” My throat tightens. He rarely admits his own feelings so plainly. I realize how intimately we have come to understand one another; it’s no longer awkward that he addresses me by my name when normally everyone would call me by my surname or a formal title. Kael stirs the embers with a log, making them crackle. The glow dances on his face, throwing golden accents on his dark hair. “I wanted to talk,” he whispers. “Tell you something important.” “Tell me anything,” I murmur, my fingers brushing over my necklace—a gift of comfort I now realize he gave last night, a small silver pendant of a wolf. He inhales and turns to face me fully. “Elana, before you came into my life, I felt... empty. We lost many seasons, pack members and mates, to fate and to enemies. I never thought I’d find anyone who could understand, who I would want with me forever.” He pauses. When he finally gazes down at me, I feel as though he’s baring his soul. “Then I found you.” My breath catches. His expression is earnest, almost vulnerable. “I see you every time I close my eyes. Every morning I wake, I thank the stars you’re alive.” My hand goes to my mouth. Heat flushes through me. Only days ago, I had been crushed, heartbroken. Now this man stands before me and says he cares so deeply. The bond between us feels like a living thing—a warmth through my veins. Kael crouches to be eye-level with me, their gazes locked. “You and I—we were meant to find each other. Mate bonds aren’t just stories. I swear, at night, if I think of you, it feels like home. Please, Elana... believe me.” Swallowing, I search his face. He is sincere; I can feel it in every trembling hair of me. “I... I believe you,” I whisper. His shoulders relax, and a smile plays on his lips. Relief floods his eyes. “You can trust me,” he says, stepping closer. I stand on my tiptoes as he bends down, and soon his arms are around me. In the hush, I feel the steady beat of his heart against my cheek. There’s a crackle of magic in the air—as if the moonlight itself listens to our slow breath. Kael cups my face in his large hand, his fingers feather-light on my skin. “I promise to cherish and protect you,” he breathes. My hands move to his chest; I feel his heart beating strong and true beneath the knit sweater he wears. I’ve fallen in love so quickly, but maybe love at first sight truly exists—my chest feels as if it could burst with warmth. He kisses me softly, gently at first. The kiss deepens. My world narrows to the feel of his lips, his mouth, the warmth of his hands holding me close. I feel safe, loved, adrift on a current of emotion. It’s not sudden or frantic; it’s slow and full of meaning. We break apart only when we can no longer breathe. In the silence that follows, Kael rests his forehead against mine. “Your scars,” he murmurs gently. I feel his breath near my ear. “I must have hurt you more than I realized. I’m sorry.” I wince slightly at his mention, but Kael raises my chin and lightly kisses the faint scar on my neck. “But you healed, and so did I.” His voice is soft with wonder. “I felt your blood, our bond forming.” I lean into him. Every movement he makes reverberates through the bond, warm reassurance pulsing between us. “I think… I think I love you,” I whisper, surprising us both. For a heartbeat his grip falters. Then he grasps me tighter, like he might never let go. His eyes glisten with happiness and relief. “I love you too, Elana. So much.” Time stops as the world swells around us. Snow continues to fall silently against the window, oblivious to our joy. He whispers against my lips, “You are mine, always.” My heart is full. I answer with a kiss, the most honest thing I could say. Stars wheel overhead as we stand locked together in front of the fire. Kael’s touch sends shivers of anticipation and desire through me. When he gently guides us to the bedroll on the floor, every step feels like a promise. There, under the comforting plume of sheepskin and with only the moon to witness, he holds me until I drift to sleep in his arms, dreaming of the future we will build together. In this wolf-hide bed beneath the First Quarter moon, we make silent vows. Love fierce as a wolf’s loyalty. Protection as unyielding as the mountain. And in each other’s arms, we find a sunrise that neither of us ever expected but both of us desperately needed.
