Chapter 3: First Light

2173 Words
The pale morning light filters through rough-hewn logs, painting the cabin in soft gold. I blink away the last threads of a dream and feel the ache in my side where Kael held me close. My heart still pounds from last night’s chaos, but the sharp sting of panic has faded. The small fire in the hearth warms the dim room, and two figures sit across from me. Fear and awe tangle in my chest. They are beautiful and human—no, they are the wolves Kael mentioned. One is tall and lean, her hair the color of autumn leaves. The other is broad-shouldered with coal-black hair and warm brown eyes. Both are wrapped in fur-lined coats against the cold. They look tired but alert. They are pack—his pack. Kael is beside me, kneeling on a fur rug. He smiles gently at me. “Morning, love,” he says quietly. His voice is low, tinged with relief. “How do you feel?” I swallow, the word trembling in my throat. “I—I’m cold,” I admit. My body is stiff and sore, but I feel safe being here, wrapped in the warmth of layers of blankets and fur. My mouth goes dry; panic flutters in my belly. “Where am I?” I whisper, looking at the two strangers. “Who are you?” The tall woman stands and approaches me with kind eyes. “It’s alright,” she says softly. “My name is Mira, and this is Bran. We’re friends of Kael’s. You’re safe here, Miss Elana. You’re with the pack.” She glances at Kael. “He said you need rest.” Bran nods and pushes a mug of hot tea towards me. Steam curls up in the winter air, and the scent of chamomile and mint soothes my tense nerves. I lift it with trembling hands. My fingers brush his hand as he passes it over. A surge of heat spreads through me. Goosebumps rise on my arms. It isn’t just the warmth of the tea; I recognize that feeling from last night—Kael’s presence flooding my senses. My pulse leaps, and I sit up straighter, trying to steady my breathing. Kael smiles at me, worry etched in the crinkles around his eyes. “Drink it slowly,” he murmurs. His warm fingers wrap around mine for an instant, and the soothing power of the bond we share flickers inside me. The cottage feels very small all of a sudden, our bodies so near. I take a breath, focusing on the sound of Mira’s soft voice as she continues. “We tend to the needs of anyone who comes into our den,” Mira says, squeezing my hand gently. “You must have been frightened after what happened last night. You shouldn’t blame yourself.” I tilt my head. “What happened?” My voice shakes. Bits of memory—the laughter of my ex, the cold betrayal, the snow around me—are hazy images. Bran takes a seat beside the fire and offers me a gentle smile. “You were lost, out in the snow,” he says carefully. “Kael found you. You were scared and hurt.” My heart thuds. I stare at Kael. “What…what did he do?” I demand softly. Kael’s face is guarded. He gently helps me sit, propping the pillows behind me. “When I found you, you were in shock. You had frozen snow on your boots and your hands. I brought you back here to warm you.” He brushes a hand through my hair. “I did what any guardian would.” The mention of guardian catches at something deep in my chest. I remember him in the forest, his golden eyes glowing with an inhuman intensity as he pulled me to safety. I feel a blush on my cheeks at the memory. Did he really drink my blood? Did he hurt me? And if he did—why do I trust him so much right now? Mira and Bran exchange a look. Mira says quietly, “Kael has told us of your heartbreak, of your ex. Last night must have been terribly painful for you.” I nod mutely, wrapping my arms around myself. The memory of the betrayal flashes behind my eyes. But Kael’s hands on mine grounding me now, I feel a flicker of something else: empathy. Kael kneels in front of me and tilts my chin so I must look into his eyes. “You are safe here with us,” he says fiercely. “I took you in because you needed help, not because you had anywhere to go.” He searches my eyes. “You aren’t alone anymore.” I breathe in slowly. He does not look like a monster at this moment. He looks protective, strong, and kind. For the first time since that night, I feel… comforted. I swallow past the lump in my throat. “Why are you doing this?” I whisper. Kael’s gaze is unwavering. “Because I’m your mate. Because I promised last night I would take care of you.” My heart hammers. The word mate echoes between us. My breath catches. Last night’s chaos floods back: the strange animal magnetism I felt when he rescued me, the bite to my neck—my neck still tingles in a warm way—and his urgent declaration in the darkness. “Mate,” I repeat as if learning the word for the first time. “But...how...why did you say that?” He glances away momentarily, as if too proud to admit what he felt. Mira steps in, understanding flickering in her dark eyes. “A mate bond is rare,” she explains gently. “It means fate has chosen you two to belong together. It happens only once in a lifetime for each of us.” Bran adds softly, “When two of us find each other as fated mates, it’s said our souls recognize one another. Kael is the Alpha of our pack—our leader—and once he finds his mate, the whole pack will protect her as one of our own.” I press my hand over my still-aching heart. “Protect... me?” I say uncertainly. It sounds impossible. I was just an ordinary college student who believed in fairytales. Now the Alpha of some hidden wolf pack is telling me I’m his soul-bound mate? It’s absurd. But there's warmth in his eyes that feels very real. Kael takes a deep breath. “I know this must be overwhelming,” he says, voice soft. “I didn’t expect it either. But as soon as I saw you, everything changed. I knew you were mine. Only my mate can understand our world fully. You’re safe with me, Elana.” The fire crackles. I stare at the swirl of tea before me, uncertain of whether to feel fear or gratitude. But Kael's sincerity settles around me like a protective cloak, and I realize that for the first time in weeks, I feel a glimmer of hope. Mira stands. “Give them some privacy,” she says to Bran, her voice low. “They need to talk.” Bran nods and rises, giving a polite bow. “Rest now. We’ll be here if you need anything.” He follows Mira out, closing the cabin door behind them. Kael curls onto the floor beside me. His gaze never leaves mine. The bond between us is fresh, fiery, like a brand on my heart. I sense, more than see, the immense power rippling just under the surface of him. He is constantly glowing, even when still. “Kael…” I start, uncertain. He smiles, that gentle, fierce expression that makes my knees weaken. “We can talk about anything.” He reaches to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing the tender spot on my neck. The shiver is not from cold. “You must have a lot of questions.” “You bet,” I whisper, voice trembling. I glance around the cabin. It’s modest and warm. Fur throws, wooden beams, the smell of pine and something earthy—like a campsite. My eyes fall on a fox-shaped carving near the hearth, as if watching me. “I’m sorry, I’m just... I never imagined something like this was real.” His eyes soften. “Wolves are all around you, hidden. We live close but apart, to keep the peace.” Kael’s voice is comforting. “You won’t have to run from reality now. I’ll protect you from anything.” I nod, the aroma of coffee and bacon filling the room as Kael stands and moves to the small wooden table. He hums quietly and starts preparing breakfast: eggs from the chickens out back, crispy strips of something meat-like, warm bread. Even in this altered world, mornings still have bacon. I inhale the scent and feel a pang of normalcy. “I’m sorry for intruding,” I say, voicing what I feel. “You went to so much trouble to help me. I had no idea about any of this.” Kael places a plate of steaming food in front of me. His wolfish grin shows perfect white teeth. “You didn’t know. It's okay. I wanted to find you first before anything happened. It’s too late to run home now, I’m afraid.” Cold reality stabs at me: I have no home to go to if the werewolf world exists now, and I’ve been taken by an Alpha who calls me his mate. Yet, as I look at him stirring his coffee, he’s just a man here. The terror recedes slightly, replaced by a rush of gratitude. “Thank you,” I whisper. Kael’s face mirrors relief. “I promised I’d keep you safe. And I will.” I force a smile and start to eat, muscles loosening. This is surreal, but I'm here, alive, and surprisingly not terrified. The plate is heavy with food, and I feel a tight hunger. The bacon sizzles as I dig in. Kael watches me for a moment, then sits across the table. He leans forward, elbows on knees. “You can ask me anything,” he says. “What did you mean when you said we’re mates?” I say between bites of egg. He gulps his coffee and laces his fingers on the table. “It means we were meant to find each other. Once we meet, neither one of us can be claimed by any other. We share a bond that even time can't break.” I reach out and brush the scar on my neck—the faint crescent mark of his bite from last night. My heart ripples at the gentle memory of his fangs. Maybe it’s because of that bite that I feel so drawn to him. “Do you… feel anything?” I ask softly, uncertain. Kael’s eyes widen. “Yes.” Relief spreads across his face. “I feel you, all the time. I sense your emotions—even when you're far. Last night, your fear was like a howl in my soul. I don’t want you to feel that again. I will protect you.” The intimacy of that confession hangs between us. My chest grows tight at the realization that this man, who I barely know, has already cared so much. “I don’t even know what this means,” I say, voice catching. “I was just a normal woman, and now—” “You were vulnerable and hurting,” Kael interrupts gently. “And now you have a pack and an alpha who cares for you deeply.” He stands and approaches me cautiously. “I know you need time. You can be angry or afraid. I won’t push you.” His words are kind. Our hands find each other on the table again, and I squeeze his fingers. Warmth blooms through me. I remember how jagged and hollow I felt beneath the Christmas tree when I saw the betrayal; here, with Kael’s thumb brushing my knuckles, I feel something else: hope, warmth, maybe even… contentment. “Thank you,” I say quietly. Kael’s gentle smile loosens the last of my tension. “No matter what happens,” he murmurs, leaning in, “you’ll always have me.” He kisses my forehead softly, and the pack is suddenly very real around me. I swallow and let some tears of relief slip out. In Kael’s arms, I might actually survive this new reality. Outside, the first light of dawn warms the sky, spilling golden rays through frosty windows. I lift my gaze and meet Kael’s glowing amber eyes. “I trust you,” I whisper, just for tonight. He nods, satisfaction and love shining in his expression. “Tomorrow, we face everything together.” And for the first time since the heartbreak, I believe him.
