I pressed my hands to my face, partly because of the pain but mostly because I hadn’t expected to be hit. I felt the blood flow between my fingers, but I could already feel the wound begin to heal, so I decided to keep my hands where they were, to prevent the Council from seeing the proof of their suspicion. Matthew’s father grabbed my hands and forced my hands away from my face. I glared at him and was just about ready to kick him where it would hurt the most but knew that it would only make the situation worse. I heard the members of the Council all gasp as my wound closed and left no trace but the blood that was still fresh on my face, dripping on the floor. “Why have you been hiding this from us?” Matthew’s father spat, his anger flaring.
