Chapter 2: The First Encounter
Emma’s first day at Blackwood High was a blur of new faces and overwhelming sensations. The school was small, the student body close-knit and wary of outsiders. She felt their eyes on her as she navigated the halls, whispers following her every move.
At lunch, she found an empty table in the corner of the cafeteria. She was unpacking her sandwich when Alex appeared, accompanied by another boy with sandy hair and piercing blue eyes.
“Mind if we join you?” Alex asked, his smile easy and disarming.
“Not at all,” Emma replied, relieved to have some company.
“This is my friend, Liam,” Alex said, introducing the boy beside him. “Liam, this is Emma.”
Liam nodded, his gaze intense. “Nice to meet you, Emma. How are you finding Blackwood so far?”
“It’s… different,” Emma said carefully. “But I think I’ll like it here.”
They chatted through lunch, Alex’s charisma balancing Liam’s more reserved nature. Emma felt a strange pull towards both of them, an attraction she couldn’t quite explain.
After school, as Emma was gathering her things, she heard a commotion outside. Curious, she followed the sound to the edge of the forest behind the school. There, she saw Alex and Liam facing off against a group of older boys. Tension crackled in the air.
“What’s going on?” she called out, stepping closer.
Alex turned, his expression dark. “Just a little disagreement. Nothing to worry about.”
The leader of the other group sneered. “Stay out of this, new girl. You don’t know what you’re getting into.”
Liam stepped forward, his eyes blazing. “Leave her out of it, Derek. This is between us.”
Derek laughed, a sound devoid of humor. “You think you can protect her? We’ll see about that.”
Before Emma could react, Derek and his gang vanished into the woods, leaving a tense silence behind.
“What was that about?” Emma asked, her heart racing.
“Just some local troublemakers,” Alex said, though his tone was anything but casual. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”
As they walked back to the inn, Emma couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the story. Something dark and dangerous lurked beneath the surface of this seemingly peaceful town, and she was determined to uncover the truth.
