CHAPTER ONE.
Betrayed. After several hours, Samara was finally done with the laundry. She sank down on a seat and took in long deep breaths. Her fingers which had been aching were now cold and numb. Who would believe that her husband, the famous billionaire Noah Edison, has no washing machine in his house? But more unbelievable is the fact that his wife does the laundry. The washing machine had stopped working three months ago and her mother-in-law had blatantly refused to have it repaired or changed. "Samara! Samara!" Agatha, her mother-in-law called interrupting her trail of thoughts. She flinched and stood shakily. "oh no! She's back and I haven't prepared lunch yet." Samara muttered to herself, Fear evident in her beautiful but weary eyes. She's been up since 5am and now, she's exhausted and hungry. She looked unkept, her hair had come loose and was now flying around, some strands sticking to her sweaty face. She felt ill and nauseous but that was the least of her problems because her mother-in-law is back and she's yet to make lunch for the family. "Where is that stupid girl? Samara!" Agatha shouted again. This sure isn't going to end well. Footsteps echoed in the sitting room and then voices. Samara headed out of the laundry room."Yes, mother! I… I'm here ma!" She answered. " What! She didn't make lunch? I'm famished, Mum" Claire, her sister-in-law whined like a toddler. Never mind that she is two years older than Samara. She's been pampered and spoilt rotten. Agatha reached out and stroked Claire's blonde hair fondly. "I know baby. Don't worry I will order something for us…" She paused and glared hatefully at Samara as she entered the sitting room. " After I'm done dealing with this wench, of course." "Wel..welcome back Mother and you too, Claire" Samara greeted them with a faint smile and attempted to take her mother-in-law's handbag but Agatha's right hand fell to her face, smacking her left cheek, and then almost immediately another slap landed on her her right cheek. This time with the back of her hand before Samara could even recover. The resounding slap echoed in the large sitting room as Samara lost her footing and slumped to the floor. The two guards bringing in the bags containing things that had been purchased from the mall gasped loudly. Agatha and Claire had gone shopping earlier after having breakfast, but not before listing out the chores she wanted completed before her return– chores that Samara had single-handedly done without any help whatsoever as her mother-in-law had insisted on taking the two maids with her to the mall. Agatha turned to the two shocked guards. "You Idiots! What are you still doing standing there, huh? Take the bags upstairs and get out this minute!" She shouted. "Yes.. yes Madam!" They replied fearfully before rushing up the stairs, disappearing for only a minute, and then running down and out of the house. Agatha turned to Samara who still sat on the floor, tears rolling down her rosy cheeks that were now red. "You useless girl. You didn't make lunch? What have you been doing since morning, huh? What?" She shouted again. Anger blazing in her eyes. "I'm sorry mother. I've been feeling ill. I… just finished with the laundry. I'm sorry. I will go.. go make lunch now" she stuttered out. And tried standing up but halfway through Agatha grabbed a fistful of her hair. Slapping her again, she pushed her forcefully. "Ahh!" Samara screamed painfully falling down helplessly on the ground. " You ungrateful b***h! How dare you tell me that? You mean you didn't cook lunch just because you were feeling sick? Feelings? Hahaha! You give yourself too much credit. Who cares about your stupid feelings, huh? You lazy, unfruitful thing! You should have just died. And then, your barren self will be out of my sons' life and out of my family forever." Agatha screamed furiously. Samara gasped, eyes wide in shock. unbelievable! How could her mother-in-law utter such mean words to her? Of course she's been nothing but cruel and wicked to her but Samara never imagined that she would wish her dead. More tears streamed down her cheeks. Her sister in-law, Claire, bursted into laughter "Hahaha! I agree Mum. Her death and exit from this house will be a breath of fresh air. Or better still, she should sign those divorce papers and we will all be done with it. Whatever did brother see in her?" Claire scorned and eyed her hatefully. " It's not like she's even all that pretty." She rolled her eyes jealously. Except that Samara is indeed very beautiful and a lovely sight to behold. With her dark brown hair that cascaded down her shoulders, emerald green eyes, that are large and pretty, high cheekbones, small reddish pink lips, and a body that can compete in any modeling competition, and win in a heartbeat, Samara always turns heads in every gathering she attends. Noah always teased his friends, Boasting about having the most beautiful wife, and often showed her off in gatherings. But that's about it. Not like he loves her or cares about whatever happens to her anyway. He will probably be glad to be rid of her as well. Samara shook her head and sniffed in. What was she doing married to a man who only uses her for showoffs? And living with a family that hates her to the point of wishing her dead? " You will better get your lazy ass into the kitchen Samara. My son's returning from his trip this evening and I want a feast prepared. Do you understand?" She asked. Noah's coming back today? And he didn't even bother to tell her– his wife? Not like she was informed about his departure anyway. Why should he tell her about his arrival? They haven't even spoken since he left. Samara thought, then sighed. "I said, do you understand?" Agatha shouted and she flinched. God! Why was she so lost in her thoughts? " I. I understand mother." She replied. Agatha who was about climbing the stairs, stopped abruptly. "For the last time, stop calling me mother! I cannot and will never be your mother. You barren unfruitful thing! " she glared. Samara lowered her head to the ground, trying hard to stop her tears but failed. She knew everything would always boil down to that— Her inability to bear children even after five years of marriage. ????? A few hours later, Samara was done preparing dinner. She stepped into the dining room which had a warmth and inviting presence. She looked around trying to add last-minute touches. Mother had mentioned that Noah was returning with a guest and she wanted everything to be perfect. The table was set with white linen tablecloths, and in the center was a large bowl of fresh fruits all glistening with dew and then a cake. She had taken time to prepare all of Noah's favorite meals. The chairs were upholstered in a deep red velvet, and the chandelier hung above the dinner table, casting a soft glow. Samara smiled, content with the outcome. She's always loved decorating and she's quite good at it. She told the maids to inform her mother-in-law that dinner was set before heading upstairs to freshen up. Cheerful voices sounded in the living room. Noah must be back. She hastily took her phone, stared at herself in the mirror, and smiled. Today is her 24th birthday and she had totally forgotten until she received a text from her best friend Susan. Sweet Su, God bless her kind heart, she thought. She looked into the mirror again, her beautiful reflection staring back at her. She is wearing a beautiful black dress that clung to her body like a second skin. The dress had silver glitters around the chest, and a slit that ran up to her mid-thighs. Noah had gotten her the dress for an opening party they attended months ago. He had said he loved the dress because it accentuated her curves and so, she wore it tonight to please him. Hopefully, they will talk about their marriage and how to make things work after dinner Smiling more, she rushed downstairs. But Samara wasn't prepared for the scene she met on reaching the living room. Her dear husband, Noah, stood with a pregnant lady in his arms smiling broadly, eyes affectionately staring at the woman and not just any woman — it's his secretary.
