Say Ah

"No!" she cried. her blue eyes were now watering and her bottom lip pouted in an attempt to make me give up, but not a chance. "Are you ever going to let me fix your tooth?", I sat back in my chair looking at her and her dramatic self. "Nope", she said triumphantly. Well she got better quickly, I thought amused. "Why not" I asked as I drew back from the large chair she was in and put the needle down. "Because my friend told me that dentists drill holes in your mouth!" she argued refusing for me to check her shaking tooth. For a seven year old she was pretty sassy. "So am I a scary dentist?" I put on a hurt look on my face, this face always worked sadly I don't have to do this for the kids only. "No, you're a nice dentist. and pretty" she blushed while looking guilty. "Why, thank you", I smiled at that. I loved when I bonded with someone it makes me feel so much better as an individual than how I felt in high school, it was a constant struggle as a young black girl, all of your friends trying to pressure you into going other directions and not really concerned about your friendship, they only wanted material things from you, but I made it and now I'm here , bonding with the cutest little girl I've ever met in my office. she was currently laid back in my baby blue orthopedic chair in her bright yellow summer dress and white flats, her mother was waiting outside at the moment and I had one other patient then my day was done. "So?" I said noticing her stalling. "What?" Sarah teased. I looked at her, "Don't you trust me?", I tilted my head, I almost really did feel hurt. "Yeah..." she said unsure. "Ok how about a pinky promise?" I said quickly. She still looked unsure, trust issues already? "You can't break one you know" I persuaded, sticking out my pinky, spicing up the deal, by wiggling it around. She giggled at the gesture, "Ok, but promise to never ever make it hurt" she demanded, trying her very best to look stern. "Sarah,I promise to never ever let this hurt", I saluted, with that we interlocked our pinkies. She laughed once more, "Ok", I smiled at her cuteness. "Great", I pinched her cheek then took my needle up. She looked at it, the worry obvious in her eyes, "I promise", I assured. She nodded. I put my mask on, "Now say ahh" "AHH", we giggled at that before I started. I quickly worked on her loose tooth numbing it at the gum first then slowly pulling it out , she twitched every now again but was no trouble, she was being very calm throughout this unlike other kids who would wreck my room before I got the chance to even touch them, the change was good. I finally finished drying up some of the blood with a cotton swab from her gum. I pulled my mask off. "All done" I said with a smile. "Really? that was quick", she tried to touch it. "Because you were a good little girl", I replied. "I know" she grinned exposing the space from her missing tooth. I smiled at her. Then gave her a small lollipop from my jar to reward her great behavior. She raised her hands for a hug it looked like so I lifted her up and carried her out. "Oof your heavy", I exaggerated, wiping imaginary sweat from my forehead. "I eat a lot", she explained. "I see". We talked while I took her into the waiting area. "Mommy mommy! look!" She smiled widely at a polite woman a little shorter than me, very petite with strawberry blond hair which was pulled up into a bun, she smiled at me as I brought her daughter to her. "I see, sugar" her mom smiled taking her daughter from me, Sarah didn't want her mother in the room because she 'wanted to be a big girl'. I pouted at her then smiled as I handed her her daughter. "Bye doctor Powell!" Sarah shouted after her mom paid the bill and they were now on their way out. "Bye honey" I smiled back at her. They left. "Uh Britney, where's my 2:30 appointment?" I asked my receptionist noticing the empty waiting area. "Christopher Noble?" she said looking through some other notes. "Yes of course" "He called saying he would be running a bit late" Britney informed. late usually meant they weren't coming at all, I had a lot of notes to catch up on so I wouldn't mind the extra time. "Ok, I'll give him thirty minutes then I'm-" I was cut off by the squeak of the office door. "Ahem, Christopher noble for his 2:30 appointment?" a deep yet smooth voice said behind me. my first thought surprisingly was that I needed to get that damn door fixed. but that was besides the point. I turned around to see the owner of this manly yet sweet voice...
