Meeting the new guy
“Liz, get up, you are going to be late for work.” Shouted mum, waking me up for the fifth time. God I hate getting out of bed in the morning. I knew she was right, so up I jumped and ran straight to the shower to wake myself up ready for the long day ahead of me. “You don’t have time for breakfast, here have my toast and go before you are late again.” Mum rushed me out the door, only just managing to get my coat and keys on the way out, I tripped over the doormat and I was out. I suppose she had a point, it was the last day of school before the summer. Maisie my best friend, met me halfway to school as she normally does, we always have a good catch up before and after school as we only have 2 classes together. She has always been my rock not just through school but for everything for as long as I can remember. Maisie lives just a few blocks down from me, our parents have been friends just as long as us. *** As we walk into the school gates I notice a new guy stood by the entrance, girls surrounding him so I already know he’s good looking. Although I wanted to see for myself, Maisie and I head our separate ways to class. “See you at break!” Maisie caked through the crowd of people. I just nodded knowing my voice would be lost over all the commotion of the new guy. I could hear someone shouting my name on the way to class but I knew I would be late if I stopped so I carried on going. Someone grabbed my arm making me jump, it was Jack. Jack is Maisie’s friend, she spends all her time with him when she’s not with me, I get on well with Jack he is a nice guy but we have never really hung out without Maisie. “Hey! I wanted to talk to you about Maisie’s birthday next week?” Ah yes, how could I forget, she’s only mentioned her birthday every day for the last two weeks! “Walk and talk.” I replied not wanting to be late for class. “Uh..umm, so I was thinking about throwing a house party at mine for her, my parents are out of town for the weekend.” He explained. “You know she doesn’t like surprises right? She will kill you.” I laughed. He grinned knowing full well I was right. “Just a few people ? Nothing big.” He winked. “Fine!” I gave in. “We can meet up later and arrange it?” I said sitting down at my desk. “Awesome!” He sat at his desk in front of me. The hour went by reasonably fast for maths, it was over before I knew it. Maybe i just wasn’t paying attention because it was the last day of school, I couldn’t wait to get home and plan Maisie’s birthday ! Jacked walked with me to our next class, History. I could see a spring in his step knowing Maisie will be there. There is definitely an unspoken thing between them, it’s written all over their faces. Maisie has never said she likes him but it’s so obvious they are always flirting. Our history teacher decided to let us spend the lesson relaxing outside as there was no work to be done and he had papers to grade and hand back to the students. We weren’t going to argue with him on that one! Maisie and Jack were messing around and flirting as always, Jack stealing her bag, and her running after him. I sat there watching them and laughing she is was too slow to get that back, I giggled to myself. I found myself thinking about how good looking Jack actually is, I had never really seen it or thought about it before but if he cut his dark scruffy hair he would actually be really hot! His clothes fitted and suited him well as Maisie max sure if that with all of their shopping trips. I soon snapped out of my thoughts when I went all dizzy and faint, I quickly sunk down to the floor huddled in a ball rocking back and forth like a little kid, this usually helped but I could feel it getting worse. “Hey, are you ok?” I hear in a faint unfamiliar voice. I try looking up but my eyes just go blurry and I could manage was a mumble. “Here.” An arm pulled me up and sat me down on the bench around the corner. “Drink some water.” Said the voice handing me a bottle. I took the bottle, eyes still blurry, and tied to drink some and compose myself a little, the dizziness was fading slowly. “Thank you.” My voice sounded weak as I turned to my helper. My eyes focused and I let out a little whimper. It was the new guy, the one all the girls were surrounding at the start of the day. Oh god. He is beautiful. “Are you ok?” He asked with the perfect smile. Jesus even his voice is perfect. “I...I’m ok.” I stuttered. “Have you eaten ?” He sounded concerned. “I’m fine, thank you for your help.” I composed myself. It fell silent, I couldn’t stop thinking how gorgeous he is. I’m going to have to say something, anything after embarrassing myself in front of the new guy already. “You’re new here?” I blurted out breaking the silence. “Yes.” His smile perfect. “I live on Prince street.” He informed me. “Me too!” I shouted before sinking into the bench, face bright red. He laughed. “I’m Dean.” His smile showing his perfect white teeth. “I’m Liz.” I chucked. “Nice to meet you.” He sighed and got up, “Walk with me?” He started to walk away not waiting for an answer. I got up carefully, not wanting to get dizzy and embarrass myself again, and followed him. “How are you feeling?” He asked looking over at me. “Umm, good, I think.” I giggled, making him grin. “So where on Prince street do you live?” He asked. “If you walk home with me after school I can show you.” As soon as it was out I regretted it, did I really just say that? I am never that forward or confident. I blushed bright red, looking down and hoping he would say something, anything. He started to chuckle to himself but then stopped abruptly and turned to me. “Do you often walk home with people you just met?” His face deadly serious. “I could be a psycho for all you know.” He gave me a huge smile and waited for me to answer. God his smile is so perfect. “No I don’t and you’re not a psycho.” I could hear the uncertainty in my laugh, he’s not a psycho right? I hope not. I just offered to walk home with him and he knows I live on his street. “Well ok, if you want.” He smiled and I couldn’t tell if he actually wanted to talk with me or if it was out of pity. “Are you an only child?” He was looking over at Maisie and Jack now. I had completely forgotten all about them, Maisie was now messing around with jacks scruffy hair, no doubt she was trying to get him to cut it again. They hadn’t even noticed I was gone. “Yes, that’s my two best friends. Well Maisie is anyway.” I said laughing at Maisie trying to cut Jack’s hair with scissors. “How about the other one?” He asked with a serious face, more interested in him than Maisie. “Jack, I don’t know as much, he’s more Maisie’s friend.” I shrugged. “So not a boyfriend then.” He smiled. “No.” I laughed too hard at that, “He’s not my type.” I explained. I turned back to Dean who was staring at me with curious eyes. He sat down on the wall we had gotten to and turned a bit so his whole body was facing me, bringing his legs up to cross them on the wall, eyes locked on mine. “So what is your type?” I moved to sit the same as him on the wall, and locked eyes with him, which was a big mistake. “Green eyes.” I looked away quickly trying to think of how to change the subject. “What kind of green?” His smile was controlled as I looked back at him. “You colour green, not dark but not light either, they stand out.” I smiled as his grey wider and I carried on, “Tall, funny, short hair, nice smile, caring, Ummm not sure what else.” I finished. He was still smiling. “Age?” He grinned. “I don’t know, definitely not younger than me so older but not too old.” I giggled before turning bright red realising I’ve just described him. Realising it was time for our next class I shor up and shouted for Maisie and Jack. They started to walk over. “I best go.” I said turning to Dean not wanting to embarrass myself any more. “Ok, where shall I meet you to walk home?” He asked. “Umm, I don’t know. By the gates?” I smiled and walked off quickly, getting all flustered as I did so. Surely he’s not actually going to walk home with me? I’m sure he will find any other girl to walk home with. I’m probably the least attractive girl at this school. Jack rushed off to his class in the next block, as me and Maisie headed to our next lesson together. She was grinning at me all the way to class, I didn’t want to talk about Dean so I rushed along to get seated. “You like him.” She teased as we sat down. “Shh. No I do not. We were just talking.” I don’t need her knowing I embarrassed myself in front of him. “Hmm.” She changed the subject. “Jack is going to give us a lift home after school ok?” “About that...” I started. “Dean wants to walk home with me we live in the same street and he doesn’t know anyone.” No way was I telling her I asked him, she would kill me. “What!” She shouted, making the whole class turn and look at us before going back to listening to the teacher. “You don’t know him!” She shouted in a whispered voice making me chuckle. “I will be fine, I’ll text you while I’m walking ok?” I reassured her.
