ADAM
A new phase of my life is beginning. I’m absolutely uncertain about it.
Next morning, I start my day early mainly because I couldn’t sleep due to the last night’s scenario replaying in my mind and I have to hold the ice pack on my aching jaw. Hopefully the bruise could be covered with makeup. I only have to formulate a lie when Sora or anyone would notice.
It was technically my last working day in this residence. However might be the up and downs I have suffered during my service, I can’t deny few beautiful memories were also created along the years. Mostly it was related to Soraya of course, so to celebrate her happiness further I bought a gift for her.
And to my fellow house help acquaintances, I baked few treats to thank them. I thought of cooking for Richards’s family but I didn’t have any strength to face their condemnatory opinions. And they haven’t recovered from the shock that the Azrael De Luca was marrying a man, me. I wondered what Azrael must have said to shut their objections.
Anyways, the breakfast period with staff in the kitchen was enjoyable, kind of awkward also because they only knew I was quitting my job not the actual reason. I won’t be there to witness their comical expressions once paparazzi release the pictures tomorrow.
Oh my god!!! By this time, entire New York, no entire world would know Azrael was married to plain old me. Judgments, skeptical looks, disapproving comments would become part of my life.
A tap on my shoulder cuts the chain of my stressful thoughts. “Tell the truth Adam Fillips behind your sudden escapades,”
Jasmine with a mouthful of blue berry muffin questions me. I try not to grimace at her manners, awkwardly chuckling.
“Nothing much, I just plan to get on a holiday.”
“You can afford it?” Macy’s lips curl in distaste.
Everyone in the room roll their eyes going back to their work while I give her a fake smile in response and walking out from there. I only get to take third step when my arm is tugged, spinning me in other direction.
“Addy, where the heck were you? I can’t believe you forgot we’re about to get married in couple of hours and you’re strolling around as if we’re visiting a garden. Urgh, only I’m sensible here to actually be serious. And what, you’re thinking of stepping on the altar with bird nest, night pajamas!”
She drags me from one corridor, staircase, all the way to her room. I get out of breath as she seems to be high on caffeine, I knew it was bad idea to let her consume three cups since morning.
“Sora, slowdown will you?”
She huffs pushing the door inside and nearly throwing me in swiveling seat. Ignoring my glare she claps her hand drawing the attention of few people, carrying huge kits with them.
“He is the man of the day, wave your magic wand and transform to his true beauty,”
They didn’t weird out with her dramatics. Instead with a big smile they turn in my direction with different tools, brushes in their hand. I try to melt in the seat, doubtfully glancing at everyone.
“Let’s begin with waxing, I open my mouth to reject the stupid idea. Sora closes my mouth, bobbing her head enthusiastically, “Yes, full body waxing.”
Initially I didn’t understand their odd expressions, then it hit me. “No!!!” my voice was muffled against her hands, I was trying to tug it away.
No one heed my response.
“Oh, c’mon Addy, it wasn’t that bad. See you are radiating after just three hours of session,”
I didn’t bother to argue with her. Only my body knew the torture, heat, pain it went through. One of the makeup artist discovered my fading bruise, I made up some lie diverting his attention. Thank god, Sora didn’t notice.
We’re both glammed up for the ceremony, I was helping Sora with fixing her tiara on her veil. Though my annoyance dissipated the moment I gazed at the complete bridal appearance of Sora.
‘Time surely passes quickly,’
My eyes watered realizing this girl in front of me was the same little girl who’d make me run after her in the entire house for food, doctor’s appointment for her toothache, for one thing or other, every day.
I remember once I was so tired of her hyperactivities that I stopped chasing her. I expected she’d be happy for not being forced to do her daily tasks instead she cried relentlessly. And the answer she gave, shook me to the core.
“Sora, she hums, admiring the small pendant I have gifted her, in the mirror, “do you remember the one time when I left you on your own and distanced myself from attending you?’
She thoughtfully gazes to the side, realizing the incident. “What did you tell me?”
She turns around, reaching for my hand, “How could I forget any moment I have spent with you, Addy? I said, “It was true and still valid. I wanted your entire attention on me so you won’t stop caring for me like my parents did,”
I wipe the small tear at corner of her eye, pulling her in my arms.
“Silly girl, you have my entire life named for you,”
She shook her head, withdrawing, “No, Addy I can’t be selfish anymore.”
I squint my eyes in confusion. “It’s about time that from today, you stop worrying about Richard residence or Soraya. You have to re discover your happiness, your future out of this cage you have created around yourself.”
A shiver ran through me. Hearing the truth from someone was profound than knowing it.
“I have Marcus, I’m going to be fine on my own from now,” she smiles confidently.
I force myself to not visibly express hurt, “Of course, you have a new life ahead. There shouldn’t be any place for me,”
She rolls her eyes, hitting my arm, “Addy, oh god! I seriously forget you are 33 not three yrs. old. You are stupid to think I’d move on leaving you behind. You are irreplaceable Addy, so you are not getting rid of me anytime soon.”
“I don’t want to,” I mumble, rubbing my arm.
She throws her hands in air, “This is what I was telling you! There is more to life than your responsibilities or me. You have to live for yourself, lean your head on someone and relax for once. I’m dead sure, Azrael would rightfully secure the place,” she wiggles her brows.
‘I don’t know about it,’ the flapping in my heart showing disagreement to my doubts.
She gasps in astonishment, once again tugging my arm. “Addy, you talk way too much. Look at the time, we’re going to be late on our own wedding. Let’s go, I have to run in these heels all because of you,”
I try to match her speed, “You should have worn the flat ones like I advised you,”
She scoffs, bunching her gown. We both literally fly through the staircase. “Please, I have every right to be the best today. You should worry about looking like an elf in front of your man,’
The car was already waiting for us, she almost shoves me inside taking her place beside. Rest of the family gave our entire scene an unbelievable kind of look, thankfully driving in separate car.
“Hey, I’m not short,” I counter, brushing my curls from my forehead.
She slaps a wet wipe in my hand, checking her makeup in hand mirror. She is carrying a makeup kit? “But your man is taller. And Addy, don’t trip on the altar, okay?”
My eyes widen, picturing it, “You are so bad, Sora. The thought didn’t even cross my mind. Now, I’m… I’m going to be on edge constantly,”
Giving me an innocent look, she elaborates, “Yeah, it’d be huge embarrassment. You don’t want the paparazzi clicking the pictures of you lying flat on the ground.”
Oh my scuffle!! what if…No, no, don’t think. “You are so mean!”
She chuckles, hugging me sideways, “No, I’m cute!”
