The Night Of Choosing
Chapter One: The Night of Choosing
The moon was full.
Not just bright, but commanding. It hung in the sky like a silent ruler, watching over the forest and everything beneath it.
Amara stood at the edge of the clearing, her fingers nervously twisting the fabric of her dress. The air felt different tonight thick, charged, almost alive.
Tonight was the Full Moon Ceremony.
She wasn’t supposed to be here.
Everyone knew it.
The Nightfang Pack gathered in the center of the clearing, their presence powerful and overwhelming. Laughter, low voices, and the occasional growl filled the night. These were wolves—real wolves. Strong. Confident. Certain of who they were.
Amara was none of those things.
“Relax,” Lila whispered beside her, nudging her arm. “You look like you’re about to run.”
“I am about to run,” Amara muttered under her breath. “I don’t belong here.”
Lila rolled her eyes. “You were invited. That means something.”
Or maybe it means they want to watch me embarrass myself, Amara thought.
She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ignore the stares. Even among humans, she had always felt different. Here, surrounded by wolves, that feeling only grew stronger.
Like something was… missing.
A sudden hush fell over the clearing.
Amara’s heart skipped.
He had arrived.
David.
The Alpha.
Even before she saw him, she felt it—the shift in the air, the way every wolf instinctively straightened. Power moved with him, heavy and undeniable.
Then he stepped into the clearing.
Tall,composed, Calm, Dangerous.
His presence silenced everything.
Amara lifted her eyes and for a brief second, their gazes met.
Something snapped.
It wasn’t a sound, not really. More like a feeling. A pull. Sharp and sudden, like an invisible thread tying her to him.
Her breath caught.
What… was that?
David froze.
Just for a moment but it was enough. His expression hardened, eyes narrowing slightly as if trying to understand something he didn’t expect.
The connection tightened.
Amara felt it in her chest, in her veins, in the very air she breathed.
Warm. Unfamiliar. Terrifying.
Around them, murmurs began to rise.
“The Alpha…”
“Who is she?”
“That’s not possible…”
Amara’s pulse raced. She didn’t understand what was happening—but every instinct told her one thing:
This was important.
Dangerously important.
David took a step forward.
So did she without thinking.
The distance between them closed.
The bond pulsed stronger.
And then—
“Mate.”
The word wasn’t loud.
But it echoed.
Through the clearing. Through the pack. Through her.
Amara’s world tilted.
Mate?
No… that couldn’t be right.
She wasn’t even a wolf.
Silence followed.
Heavy. Suffocating.
Then came the shift.
The warmth in David’s eyes disappeared, replaced by something cold. Calculating.
Doubt.
The whispers grew louder.
“She’s human.”
“She has no wolf.”
“This is a mistake.”
Amara felt it all crashing down at once. The stares. The judgment. The sudden weight of something she didn’t ask for.
David’s jaw tightened.
For a moment, just a moment, it looked like he was fighting something within.
Then his expression went completely still.
Controlled.
Distant.
And Amara’s heart began to break before he even spoke.
