Henry ignored the agitated murmurs of the she-wolves and continued at a louder volume. With their werewolf hearing, he didn't need to raise his voice. But Henry liked hearing his voice dwarfing the annoying chatter of the shaken females.
"To qualify for a post in the palace, you need to excel in at least 2 of the evaluation topics. After that, the more evaluation topics you successfully complete with excellent marks, the higher your post in the Crescent Palace will be. Is that clear?"
"Clear, Instructor Henry!" The she-wolves chorused.
"Good. Now go and get prepared. You have 15 minutes before the evaluation begins." Henry's gaze inadvertently swept over to Yusria. The female was wolf-less but her combat strength and intelligence were above ordinary she-wolves.
With her skills, she would have no problem clearing two-three evaluations. But now that Henry had decided to take her to the Research Institute, he needed to keep her out of the Emperor's eye.
His expression turned grave as he sank back in his seat and his vision thoughtfully drifted to three she-wolves huddled together in a suspicious manner.
'Hmmm...Maybe...I don't need to do anything.'
The Delta Instructor's lips stretched into a wide smile. He carelessly leaned back in his seat and watched the females leave the training field.
Yusria waited until the she-wolves cleared the field before she turned and made her way toward the restrooms. Sweat poured down her forehead, mirroring the state of her body under the long-sleeved dirty green blouse and heavy skirt.
The broiling late-summer sun was merciless, relentlessly beating down on her and cooking her under her heavy clothing. Yusria was afraid to wear more open clothes. As time passed and she grew stronger, the little creatures that swarmed around her grew in numbers.
All she needed to do was expose her wrist for butterflies to flutter over her arms and annoying bees to buzz around her head. For her milk-white skin to light up like a lightbulb and attract everyone's attention.
To cover up the many abnormalities around her, Yusria wore as many layers of clothes as she was comfortable with and did extra laps to purposely sweat, allowing her to use them as a cover-up for her still fair skin and glowing face when the she-wolves grew too curious to maintain their hostility and questioned her.
But most importantly, the dragging skirt covered the view of the grass that bent down at her every step and the water that split apart at her feet.
"After the evaluation is over, we'll no longer have to gather on the training field. I'll finally have a little bit of time to myself." Yusria wanted to take advantage of the short buffer time before the emperor's arrival to explore the changes in her body.
Even though she called herself a wolf-less female, at this point, Yusria wasn't even sure of what she was anymore.
And this frightened her.
The training facility's restrooms were made out of wood with a modern set-up of sinks, showers, and marble floors to make it convenient for the she-wolves to take a quick shower after a tiring work-out session.
Yusria hurried to the sink and opened the cold tab. She scooped a handful of water and splashed it on her face, instantly sighing in comfort at the immediate relief. Folding up her sleeves and leaning on the counter, she blissfully washed her arms and neck.
Yusria was so caught up in the act of washing herself, humming and twirling in delight, that she failed to notice the slight click of a lock falling into place.
"I needed that..." Finally satisfied after splashing herself for over ten minutes, Yusria rolled down her clothes and headed to the door.
But when she pulled on the door handle, the door did not budge.
"Is it jammed?" She put more force on the handle, pulling the door inwards to force it open. However, even after she placed all her strength into the handle, the da** door refused to move a smudge.
A bad feeling pervaded Yusria's heart. The restrooms in the training facility were set up for the personal and private use of the she-wolves. They were kept open during the day and were only locked at night with the keys placed in the hands of...
Haily, the nominated leader of the she-wolves.
"Goddess! Did they just lock me in the bathroom!?" Yusria shrieked.
She was panicking now. Yusria knew the instructors didn't like her. If she fails to make it on time for the evaluation, then they will never give her the chance to retake it. On the contrary, they would directly fail her on the basis of not taking the assessment seriously.
She couldn't allow that to happen. If she failed to pass this evaluation, then she would never step foot in the Eastern Crescent Empire.
"Hey! Anyone out there!? Open the door!? There's someone in the restroom! Open the door!"
Yusria screamed and shouted until her voice turned harsh, and her throat became sore. But no matter how loud she yelled and how desperate she cried, no one came to open the door.
"Please...someone...open the door..."
Tears of despair and hopelessness streaked down her cheeks. Yusria's body lost all strength as she slumped on the metal door and slowly slid to the floor.
It was over. Her dreams, her aspirations, her hope for a brighter future...
In a matter of a few hours, everything would turn to dust. Though the walls of the restrooms were made out of wood, the door was made out of absolute metal. It could neither be broken nor smashed down. It was made this way to provide a sense of security to the she-wolves that would be training in the middle of nowhere with a group of male deltas high on hormones.
Sadly, this same metal door has sealed her fate today.
Back on the training field, Morgan walked toward Haily and Grizzell in a bright mood. A wide smile stretched across her lips as she practically skipped her way to the two.
"So? Is it done?" Haily merely glanced at the dark-haired she-wolf. She didn't need to hear the other she-wolf's answer. From the excited gleam in her eyes and the broad smile on her lips, she could tell Morgan had accomplished the task.
But for formalities sake and her own peace of mind, she still asked anyway.
"It's done. The bi**h won't be able to appear until the last two of the evaluations. And that's only if Head Instructor Tim returns and specifically looks for her."
The Head Instructor's goodwill towards the wolf-less wench wasn't lost to them. But even if he likes her, so what? Yusria was locked in the bathroom. She wouldn't be churning any waves even if she appeared later.
Because by that time, the combat and strength-related evaluations, the only topic they were formally guided through by the instructors, would be concluded.
With nearly zero knowledge of the other topics of evaluations, they wanted to see what waves Yusria would be able to cause.
Coming to the same conclusion as her friend, Haily's brown eyes flashed with a triumphant smirk as she snickered. "Good job, Morgan. Let's do well in this evaluation and enter the Crescent Palace together. I'll be sure to look after you and Grizzell."
"Yes, beta! We'll be counting on you!" The two girls, both of gamma lineage, were beyond ecstatic to receive the beta's goodwill. With the backing of a beta on their side, their lives in the Crescent Palace might be one straight out of a dream.
The surrounding she-wolves caught the furtive exchange between the three females. Their expressions turned a little unnatural when they noticed Yusria's absence but took no action to point it out.
Because even though they felt uncomfortable with the way the she-wolves were plotting against the wolf-less female, they didn't mind having one less formidable opponent to compete with.
Each with their own thoughts, the she-wolves shuffled and reshuffled, switching instructors to take the evaluations they felt most confident in passing before proceeding to the harder ones.
All the she-wolves successfully passed the combat portion of the evaluations. But when it came to the politics and diplomacy portion, only the red-head Yusria rescued, Haily, Morgan, and Grizzell managed to achieve the bare minimum.
Around mid-noon, Head Instructor Tim finally came back. And just as the she-wolves suspected, his sight immediately began to search for Yusria.
"Where is that she-wolf? It can't be she's done already, right?"
Henry only grunted in reply. He hadn't seen the wolf-less female, but he wasn't about to share that with the Head Instructor. He had an inkling of what was going on and wished for time to speed up so they could quickly conclude the evaluations.
Once the evaluations were concluded, it wouldn't matter whether Yusria appeared or not.
However, Instructor Henry's thoughts completely strayed from those of Haily and her two friends. Unlike Henry, they didn't want to keep Yusria from taking the evaluation. They only wanted to make it so that she wouldn't outshine them.
As such, the moment they saw Head Instructor Tim, one of them stealthily removed herself from the group.
"Come quickly and don't let Instructor Tim notice you!" Haily whispered after the other's fading figure.
She received no response, but she knew the other had heard her.
'Click.'
Knock. Knock.
Grizzell unlocked the door and knocked twice before rushing back to the training field. She had unlocked Yusria, and whether the other followed after her or never came was now none of her business.
Yusria was listlessly leaning against the metal door when she heard the click and two knocks. She froze for a brief moment before her eyes lit up with a radiant light. Without a moment's hesitation, she pushed to her feet and yanked the door open.
This time, it opened without a problem.
With a speed that could rival a shifted wolf, she dashed towards the training field.
Even though she was aware she had missed the other evaluations and her chances of clearing two of the remaining evaluations with excellent results were close to none, she didn't care.
"I already came this far. I will not give up without trying."
