Like the rest of her gang, Haily felt a raging flame in her heart whenever she looked at Yusria. Unwavering and confident in the manner she carried herself, the wolf-less trash exploited the excellent genes of the werewolf race to their fullest extent.
Though she couldn't shift, Haily had an inkling, one she refused to acknowledge, that Yusria's strength was on par with her own.
And this made her restless.
Haily wanted to capture the Emperor's attention. She wanted to become the personal guard or even servant of the Emperor's future Empress. To secure a good future for herself in the Eastern Crescent Empire, the home of her dreams for the past two years, she wanted to impress the master of that empire with her strength, rank, and beauty.
But with Yusria around...
No! Even if the task was more difficult to accomplish than climbing the back mountains, Haily had to do something. She could not allow the sl** Yusria to snatch the spotlight from her.
"Morgan, Grizzell, lend me your ears." She whispered.
"Huh?"
The two girls on the right and left of her looked at Haily in confusion. Seeing her gaze fixed on the hateful Yusria, their eyes widened in understanding and they smirked.
Then, under the cover of those standing next to them, the three girls huddled together. Their conversation was barely above a whisper, and although the other she-wolves couldn't hear what they were saying, the excited gleam in the three females' eyes made them aware of the fact that they were up to nothing good.
"Sigh. Yusria isn't bad. But she made the foolish decision of flaunting her prowess before Haily, Morgan, and Grizzell. These three are ruthless and will probably not go easy on her."
"I hope that whatever happens, the sight won't be too gruesome."
"Breaking a bone or two, and a little disfigurement should suffice."
Though the other females sighed heavily and looked pitifully at Yusria, their words and the gleam in their eyes that said they were looking forward to watching a good show exposed their malicious hearts.
Yusria's lips twitched uncontrollably as she forcefully suppressed the mocking laughter in her eyes upon hearing the she-wolves' words.
Such hypocrites! She wondered if their faces ever hurt from speaking so much nonsense. They spoke softly and gently, yet their callous words were enough to chill a person's heart. She couldn't understand.
Being females that escaped captivity and trained together for two entire years, didn't they feel disgusted to spew such words? Shaking her head, she focused her attention back on the instructors.
After two years of hard work, Yusria had finally managed to become what she had desperately wanted to be in her past life; strong.
Her wolf didn't appear, but she felt something in her being that both strengthened her body and boosted her abilities. Excavated her potential and sharpened her senses.
Wolf or not, Yusria had managed to hone a level of strength that surprised even herself. She had uncovered abilities that she feared to even display before her instructors and co-trainees.
As such, she only displayed a meager of her strength. But that was enough for her to capture the attention of all the individuals in the training facility.
The Head Instructor of the training facility swept his gaze over the assembled females and smiled. He watched these she-wolves enter this facility two years ago looking weak and feeble, close to dying on their feet. Two years later, the same females that were on the brink of death had transformed and evolved to the point of being impossible to associate them with the same batch of she-wolves with vacant looks.
If he said he didn't feel pride swell up in his heart on witnessing their incredible transformation, then he would be lying.
Head Instructor Tim emotionally cleared his throat and hollered. "Everyone, the past two years have been tough on you, we know. You woke before dawn and slept after twilight. You trained day and night under our strict guidance and pushed your limits. And even though we have lost a few of you, I'm proud to proclaim the half of you still remaining as the first female warriors of the Eastern United Pack of the Eastern Empire!"
On hearing his speech, the she-wolves felt their eyes sting and in the next instant, they raised their fists into the air and cheered at the of their lungs.
"Yay!"
"We did it! We will see the Lykan Emperor!"
"We can go to the Eastern Crescent Empire!"
The deafening cheers resounded in the back mountains for a long time, carrying hope, expectations, and anticipation for a new beginning, a new future. The instructors smiled knowingly among themselves and allowed the she-wolves to rejoice for a while longer before Head Instructor Tim burst their bubble.
"Alright, that's enough! Although you managed to successfully complete the training, you still need to pass the evaluation to be placed in the Crescent Palace. Yusria, even though you don't have a wolf, I still have great expectations for you. With your skills and abilities, you have a chance of earning the Emperor's favor. Do your best and make us proud!" The Head Instructor looked at the she-wolf with admiration.
"Yes, Head Instructor." Yusria politely nodded her head, garnering the hateful and jealous glares of the she-wolves around her.
"Hmm...I know you'll do well. And I want you to know that your unwavering determination will inspire many others out there."
As the head of the instructors, he was aware of the instructors' hidden schemes and manipulations to evict the female from the training field because of her inability to awaken her wolf. While they threw her into dangerous situations with the excuse of evoking the other half of her soul, they had been plotting to break her spirit to force her to willingly withdraw from the training facility on her own volition.
They wanted to stand out from the rest of the training facilities in other parts of the Eastern Empire. However, they perceived the young she-wolf as a liability since she couldn't shift. So forcing her to awaken her wolf or making her willingly leave the facility was the only way they wouldn't have to answer to the Emperor.
Unexpectedly, against all odds and expectations, the wolf-less female not only managed to overcome all obstacles and stuck to the end, but she had also managed to defeat the other she-wolves that awakened their wolves.
Instructor Henry, sitting on the right of the Head Instructor, sensed the appreciation in the latter's voice towards the she-wolf. He frowned and looked at the Head Instructor with an ugly expression on his face.
"Head Instructor, I still say there's something really strange about this female. We all know it isn't an ordinary matter to beat opponents who have their wolves awakened. But this girl is able to accomplish such a task. Truthfully, I find the whole situation fishy. Are you sure you don't want to inform the Research Institute about her? Maybe they can discover something after experimenting on her."
"Henry, we have already been over this topic. I don't want to hear anything about the Research Institute again. This female was brought here by the Black Troop with the rest of the she-wolves. Whether the females are abnormal or not is none of our business. I'll be including a detailed report in the files sent to the Emperor. Now that their training is over, they will no longer be our responsibility."
"But..."
"No 'but', Henry! This topic is over!"
Tim hated the very mention of the research institute. As a place where wolves and creatures of abnormal abilities were held captive and brutally experimented on, he didn't want to be the hand that condemned an innocent soul, or any soul, to their cruelty only on the basis of being different from the majority.
"Now inform the females how this evaluation will proceed," he concluded. He swept over the she-wolf of their conversation with a satisfied smile as he leaned back in his seat.
"Yes, Head Instructor."
Instructor Henry clenched his fists, turbulent emotions flickering in his stormy eyes for a few heartbeats, before he sighed and composed his expression.
He was aware of the Head Instructor's dislike of the Research Institute. But as a loyal subject of the empire and a delta with great ambitions, Henry wasn't convinced of the other's reasoning. He still felt that reporting the abnormal she-wolf to the Research Institute was the right thing to do.
Both for himself and the werewolf race.
After all, there were many wolves that weren't able to shift or awaken their wolves for one reason or another. If the institute could discover how the she-wolf was able to display abilities only a werewolf with an awakened wolf was capable of displaying, wouldn't the entire Werewolf Community stand to benefit?
The more Henry thought in this direction, the more convinced he became that he must inform the Research Institute about the she-wolf's abnormality. Even if it meant doing so behind the Head Instructor's back.
Strengthening his resolve, Henry pushed to his feet and addressed the group of females.
"She-wolves, the Emperor will be arriving in three days to escort you back to the Eastern Crescent Palace. After entering the palace, you will be positioned in a station befitting your abilities and skills. Therefore, to evaluate your abilities and skills, we will be conducting individual evaluations in the areas of foreign languages, foreign affairs, diplomatic relations, emergency drills, leadership skills, unexpected direct physical confrontations, endurance and resilience under pressure, and problem-solving."
Immediately, an uproar spread through the group of females.
"What!? Why are we being tested in so many subjects!? Weren't we only going to display our physical prowess?"
"That's right! We have only been trained to fight, endure, and defend. Why are we being tested in foreign affairs, languages and...what were the rest?"
"This feels more like an evaluation for an administrative or management position than a warrior post. Are all the evaluations for employment in the Crescent Palace this strict?"
Yusria's brows furrowed in confusion as she went over the evaluation topics in her head. As much as she hated to admit it, she couldn't help agreeing with the she-wolves' queries and comments.
Why were there so many topics out of the blue? Were they being employed in an administrative position or a warrior post?
Because this evaluation covered topics beyond her expectations.
