Chapter 1
The Moon Chose Wrong The Moon Goddess had always been cruel to Selene. At least, that was what everyone in the Crescent Moon Pack believed. She was twenty-two years old, yet she had never shifted into her wolf. While other pups celebrated their first transformation at sixteen, Selene remained human, earning whispers wherever she went. "She's wolf-less." "The future Luna? What a joke." "Alpha Kingston deserves someone stronger." Every word cut deeper than the last. Still, Selene refused to give up. She had loved Alpha Kingston since they were children. He had once protected her from bullies and promised that, when he became Alpha, no one would ever hurt her again. Those promises were now nothing but painful memories. Tonight was the annual Moon Blessing Ceremony. The entire pack had gathered beneath the sacred silver oak tree, where the Moon Priestess would announce the Alpha's destined mate. Selene's hands trembled as she smoothed her silver-blue dress. "Don't be nervous," her best friend whispered with a smile. "Everyone knows you'll become Luna tonight." Selene tried to smile back. She wanted to believe it. She truly did. The ceremonial drums echoed through the clearing. Every member of the pack fell silent as Alpha Kingston stepped forward. He looked breathtaking. Dressed in a tailored black suit beneath a long dark coat embroidered with silver, Kingston carried himself like the powerful Alpha he had become. His piercing blue eyes swept over the crowd without emotion. For a brief second, their eyes met. Selene's heart skipped. Maybe... Maybe everything would finally be okay. The Moon Priestess raised her hands. "By the blessing of the Moon Goddess, tonight we witness destiny." Silver light surrounded Kingston. A golden thread of moonlight stretched into the crowd. It raced toward Selene. Gasps erupted. Tears filled her eyes. The Moon Goddess had chosen her. Before she could take a single step, Kingston's cold voice shattered the moment. "I reject her." Silence. No one moved. No one even breathed. Selene stared at him, unable to understand what she had heard. "K... Kingston?" His expression remained hard. "I reject Selene as my Luna." The sacred light flickered violently. The Moon Priestess's face turned pale. "Alpha... you cannot—" "I can." His icy voice echoed through the forest. "I refuse to accept a wolf-less woman as my Luna." The crowd exploded into whispers. Some laughed openly. Others looked at Selene with pity. Her entire body shook. Every dream she had carried since childhood crumbled in front of hundreds of witnesses. Kingston didn't even look guilty. Instead, he turned toward another woman standing among the elders. Tall. Beautiful. Confident. Vanessa. The strongest she-wolf in the pack. She smiled triumphantly. Selene finally understood. This had been planned. Her chest tightened until she could barely breathe. The Moon Goddess had chosen her... But the man she loved had chosen someone else. Selene's knees nearly gave out beneath her. The laughter began as a whisper before spreading through the crowd like wildfire. "A wolf-less Luna?" "I knew the Alpha would never accept her." "She actually believed she was worthy." Every cruel word stabbed deeper than the last. The silver thread of moonlight connecting her to Kingston flickered violently, as if even the Moon Goddess grieved the rejection. The Moon Priestess stepped forward, her voice shaking. "Alpha Kingston, think carefully. Rejecting your fated mate will have consequences. The Moon Goddess does not bless such decisions lightly." Kingston didn't hesitate. "I've made my choice." He turned toward Vanessa, who stood proudly among the pack members with a victorious smile. "I choose someone worthy of standing beside me." Vanessa walked to his side and slipped her arm through his. She looked directly at Selene, a smug smile curling on her lips. "I suppose fate makes mistakes sometimes." The crowd burst into laughter again. Selene clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palms. She refused to cry. Not here. Not in front of them. Not in front of him. Her adoptive stepmother folded her arms with disgust. "I warned you," she sneered. "You embarrassed this family the day we took you in." Her stepsister giggled. "I hope you finally understand your place." Selene looked around desperately. Not one person stood up for her. Not one. The people she had grown up with... The people she had protected and cared for... They all looked away as though she no longer existed. Kingston's cold gaze finally met hers. "There is one more thing." His deep voice silenced the crowd. "From this day forward, Selene is stripped of every privilege she held within the Crescent Moon Pack." Gasps echoed through the clearing. "The house she occupies belongs to the Alpha's family. She will vacate it before sunrise." Selene stared at him in disbelief. "You... you're throwing me out?" "You are no longer my responsibility." His voice was emotionless. "You are free to leave." The words shattered the last piece of her heart. She had loved this man for years. Every smile. Every promise. Every dream. All of it had been a lie. Without another word, Selene turned and walked away. She kept her head high despite the tears blurring her vision. Behind her, the celebration resumed. Music. Cheers. Laughter. It was as though she had never mattered. ... The cold night air wrapped around her as she entered the forest. Only when the pack house disappeared from sight did she finally stop. A sob escaped her lips. "Why?" she whispered to the silent moon. "What did I do to deserve this?" No answer came. Only the wind rustling through the ancient trees. She sank to the ground, tears flowing freely now. "I wasn't asking to be special," she cried softly. "I only wanted someone to love me." The forest suddenly grew unnaturally quiet. The wind stopped. Even the insects fell silent. Selene slowly lifted her head. A strange warmth spread through the air. Then... She heard it. A deep, powerful wolf's howl. Not from any ordinary wolf. This howl carried authority. Power. Royal blood. Golden eyes appeared between the trees. They watched her without blinking. Selene froze. A towering silver wolf stepped into the moonlight. It was unlike anything she had ever seen. Its fur shimmered like liquid silver beneath the full moon. Its golden eyes glowed with ancient intelligence. Instead of attacking... The magnificent creature lowered its head respectfully. As though bowing before her. Selene's breath caught. "What... are you?" The wolf stared into her violet eyes. In that instant, a mysterious voice echoed inside her mind. "At last..." "I have found my Queen." Selene's eyes widened in shock. Before she could react, the wolf disappeared into the darkness as silently as it had come. She remained rooted to the spot, her heart pounding. She had been rejected by her Alpha... Yet something far greater had just found her.
