the girl who lived next to the lake
Lily and her family had moved to many different places over the years. Her mom had married James, a professional football player, and because of his job, they always had to move to new cities. This time, they ended up in a small village next to a lake, surrounded by a thick forest. The house was nice, but Lily couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
James, her stepdad, was always busy with football. He would practice or play games most of the day. Her mom took care of her little brother, Timmy, who was too young to be left alone. Lily felt alone, she often went for walks by the lake and in the woods, hoping to feel better. But recently, something about the forest made her nervous.
One afternoon, Lily decided to walk deeper into the forest than she had before. The trees were tall, and the air felt heavy, like something was watching her. Then, she heard it, whispers. At first, they were soft and barely heard, but soon, they got louder.
“Lily… Lily…”
Lily looked around but couldn’t see anyone. Her heart started to race. She quickly ran back toward the house, feeling like someone was following her. The whispers didn’t stop, they seemed to echo in her ears the whole way back.
When Lily got home, she tried to tell her mom and James what had happened, but they didn’t believe her. Her mom thought she was just tired from all the moving, and James didn’t even seem to care. They told her to go to therapy. They all thought she was imagining things.
But the whispers didn’t stop. In fact, they got worse. Lily could hear them even when she was alone in her room. Sometimes, she would hear footsteps behind her when she walked near the lake, but when she turned around, no one was there.
One evening, Lily couldn’t take it anymore. She had to know what was happening. She sneaked out of the house after everyone went to bed and walked toward the lake. The whispers grew louder as she walked, and she felt a chill in the air.
When she reached the water, she saw it, the figure. It was tall and thin, with glowing eyes. It didn’t move, but it stared at her. The whispers became even louder, like a thousand voices calling her name.
“Lily… Lily…”
Lily froze. She tried to turn around and run away, but her feet felt heavy, like the earth was holding her in place. The figure began to move toward her, its long fingers reaching out. She screamed, but no sound came out. The air around her grew colder, and the ground seemed to pull her closer to the water.
The figure almost reached her when Lily was suddenly pulled into the water. She fought to get out, but the cold water surrounded her, making it hard to breathe. She looked up at the shore, and there it was, the figure, standing and watching her drown. Its glowing eyes never blinked.
The next morning, Lily’s family searched the house, the lake, the village, and the forest, but there was no sign of her. The villagers thought that perhaps she had run away, but some of them whispered that they knew the truth. They knew something dark had taken her.
Lily’s family moved again, but no one wanted to live near that lake. The house sat empty, and the forest waited, silent and still, for the next person to hear its call.
