Chapter 3 : THE ALPHA

1167 Words
The doors opened. Every conversation stopped. My heart was pounding like crazy when I entered the ceremony room. Damon was at the end of the aisle. He looked different. Not softer. Not happier. More dangerous. As I approached him, his eyes were staring at me. I momentarily forgot about the deal for one weird moment. I didn't remember the money. I had forgotten all this. There was only him. And the strange attraction I experienced when I looked into his eyes. I got to the altar. Damon stretched out his arm. I put mine in it. As soon as my skin came in contact with his, heat flooded my body. Damon inhaled sharply. My fingers were held by his. The officiant started speaking, but I did not hear him very well. Something was happening. My hand to my chest grew a warm feeling. Damon tensed his face. He tightened his jaw, as if he were struggling with something within himself. Then I heard it. A growl. Not from him. From somewhere deeper. I looked around. It didn't seem to surprise anyone else. My heart stopped. Damon leaned closer. “Don't react.” “What was that?” “Nothing.” “That wasn't nothing.” His eyes glinted gold. “Please.” It was the first time I'd heard him say that word. I stared at him. The heartless multibillionaire was saying that a person must believe in him. I assume I nodded, but I couldn't tell you why. The ceremony continued. The moment had come and the officiant finally said, “You may kiss your bride.” The entire room was silent. Damon looked at me. His gaze fell on my mouth. Then he took a peek into my eyes. “There's no need to,” he whispered. I almost laughed. “You're the one who wanted this marriage.” His mouth tightened. “Yes.” He leaned closer. Our lips are just touching each other. Suddenly, there was a blast of heat between us. Damon sprinted off at once. He wheezed and gasped with his breathing. I touched my lips. “What happened?” He didn't answer. Rather, he fixed his gaze on the windows. The sun was about to set. Night was coming. His expression changed. Fear. Real fear. “Naledi.” “What?” “After we get home back into your room you stay in your room.” I frowned. “Why?” “Be sure not to come out regardless of what you are hearing tonight.” “Damon—” “Promise me.” I stared at him. Then I nodded. “I promise.” He let go my hand. But as I was about to walk, an old woman in the crowd suddenly came forward. She grabbed by my wrist. Her eyes widened. “The mark.” Damon's expression turned into one of shock. “Let go of her.” The woman didn't listen. She turned my hand over. A small silver symbol had emerged on my inside wrist. This was the first time I had ever seen it. “What is that?” I whispered. The woman turned as white as a sheet of paper. “The Moon Mark.” I followed along with Damon. “Enough.” The lady looked at him. “She has been chosen.” “Leave.” “But Alpha—” “LEAVE!” The air grew silent in the room. The woman at once bent her head down. “Yes, Alpha.” My stomach dropped. There it was again. Alpha. I looked at Damon. He shut his eyes for a while. He knew it was now an inevitable reality. “Come with me.” He took my hand. I made my way to the door of the room and followed him outside. “Damon.” He kept walking. “Damon, stop.” He finally turned. “What?” “You're a werewolf.” I spoke but he did not reply. My heartbeat started pounding. I knew something wasn't right,” said one. He stared at me. “This is not how you should've known.” “So it's true?” “Yes.” I stepped backward. Damon didn't move toward me. “Ahoo, I'm the Alpha of the Nightcrest Pack.” “Pack?” “Yes.” “And all those in the room?” “Werewolves.” I stared at him. The world was no more. I laughed nervously. “This isn't possible.” “It is.” “You believe in werewolves?” “Yes.” “And you?” His eyes glistened gold. “I am one.” I couldn't breathe. He stepped closer. “You're afraid.” “Yes.” “I won't hurt you.” “How do I know?” “You don't.” I was more afraid of his telling the truth than a lie. I glanced at my wrist. The silver mark was still glowing weakly. “What is this?” My eyes locked back on the eyes of Damon. His expression darkened. “This is the issue,” explains the problem. What does all that mean? He hesitated. You are my Wolf's choice. I shook my head. “I'm human.” “I know.” If it's not true, then it can't be true.” “It shouldn't be.” So, why did that happen? He looked away. “I don't know.” For the first time, Damon Knight had nothing to do. Then came a screaming noise throughout the estate. I froze. Another howl followed. Then another. Damon became rigid all over. “They're here.” “Who?” His eyes became all golden. “The rogues.” “What is it that they want?” He directly looked at me. “You.” The house trembled as the car collided with it. The windows of some of the houses on the street below were blown out. People began screaming. I was pushed behind by Damon. “Stay here.” “Where do you have to go?” “To protect you.” You assured me that you wouldn't hurt me. His eyes softened. “I won't.” Then his face changed to something frightening. I cannot guarantee that I will do anything to anyone who tries, but . . . He then looked in the direction of the hallway. I saw him depart. Then I heard something which could not be written. A growl like a deep animal's came out of him. His shoulders shifted. His fists were clenched into tight fists. As he vanished into the shadows I knew that my contract marriage had suddenly turned into a war. I put my wrist to my lips and peeped at the glowing mark that was on my wrist. It pulsed once. Twice. Then, a voice spoke to me in my mind. Run. I froze. The voice was heard once more. Before the Alpha's enemies find out what you really are.
