Chapter 1 : THE CONTRACT
There were three rules to the contract.
The rules: Don't fall in love with a Damon Knight.
Rule Two: Don't ask him where he goes each full moon!
Rule Three: Don't get pregnant.
I couldn't get my eyes off the third rule!
“Is this a joke?”
The man opposite me didn't laugh.
Damon Knight just put his hands on the armrest of his black leather chair as if he had all the time in the world.
“No.”
I swallowed.
The office was gigantic. Everything inside was expensive, the dark wood, the fancy paintings, the marble floors, the furniture – it all shouted money and glittered with the lights of Johannesburg.
Never had been in these places.
But I had to be right in the middle of one because I needed $100,000.
My sister needed it more.
“My attorney drew up the contract,” Damon replied. “For one year you will be my wife.”
“After a year...?”
“The marriage ends.”
“And the money?”
“It comes to you right after you sign.”
I gripped the rim of the chair with my hands.
One hundred thousand dollars.
That's enough for my sister.
That's enough to give her a chance.
Make me think about marrying a stranger as if.
But what's the point of having a wife?
Damon's jaw tightened.
“My grandfather's inheritance.”
I frowned.
“My grandfather gave me controlling interest of Knight International, with one condition,” he went on.
“Must be married.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“One year.”
I scanned through the contract again.
It sounded ridiculous.
I also got a hospital bill waiting for me.
My younger sister Liana had been suffering for months. Each day the doctors were saying that we require more funds. I observed and watched her grow weaker every day.
I had done all the things.
Extra shifts.
Loans.
Begging.
We sold practically all of what we had.
Nothing was enough.
Two days before, I had been approached by Damon Knight's assistant who had offered me something I never would have thought of.
A fake marriage.
I was hoping for an elder statesman.
Not him.
Damon was as young as 30. Tall and wide chested and wore all black with dark hair and dark eyes which gave me a lot of discomfort.
He was not a very pretty guy, a very friendly guy.
He was dangerous-looking.
A man who never had to beg anybody twice.
“Why me?” I asked.
His eyes fixed on my eyes.
An odd thing flashed through them for an instant.
Gold.
I blinked.
His eyes turned back to brown.
“You have to pay for the money,” he explained.
“What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.”
“That's enough for it to answer.”
I didn't like him for being so arrogant.
I just needed his money, though.
I got my pen.I took my pen.
“What is the point of having just three rules?”
However, there are three rules that are important.”
I paused.
What will happen if I break one?”
His expression changed.
“Don't.”
The one word made shivers run down my back.
I signed my name.
Naledi Mokoena.
Damon was ready to take the deal.
As soon as he put his finger on mine, he stopped moving.
His breathing stopped.
His eyes widened.
The billionaire was truly as if he'd been slapped.
After that his students got darker.
Not brown.
Not black.
Something almost golden.
His hand clutched my hand.
“What do you think I am, 'cause I’m not a human,” he whispered.
I withdrew my hand.
“What?”
He sprang to his feet and his chair rolled back!
His nostrils flared.
He looked at me like I was a ferocious, new animal.
He then whispered a word that I couldn't identify.
“Mate.”
I frowned.
“Excuse me?”
He was quick to turn his face to stone.
“Nothing.”
“You said—”
“I said nothing.”
He took the job and went on his way.
However, I saw that his hands trembled.
His anger was not as alarming as his fright.
Damon Knight seemed to be a man who could run an entire corporation without breaking a sweat.
But somehow, he was disturbed by touching me.
The door to the office opened before I could ask any questions.
A tall man entered.
He glanced at Damon and then at me.
His face went pale.
“Alpha.”
I stared at him.
Damon's face turned into a mask of death.
“Leave.”
The man didn't move.
“Alpha, the pack—”
“I said leave.”
The stranger immediately backed out.
The door was banged closed.
I slowly stood.
“Who was that?”
Damon didn't answer.
So why did God call you alpha?
Silence.
I glanced at the papers on his desk.
Then at him.
“There weren't any secrets, was there?”
“That's not what I would ever say.”
“You're hiding something.”
His gaze met mine.
I saw something crawling under the skin of his face for one horrifying second.
Something animal.
Something impossible.
Damon came to me.
He came to a halt within inches of her.
“It is important to ignore what you heard.”
“Why?”
Less they know about me, safer you are.”
My heart pounded.
“Threatening” you?
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“I'm warning you.”
He left and opened the door.
Our wedding day is next day.”
I stared at him.
“Tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“That soon?”
His gaze came back to me.
This time, it seemed like desperation was behind them.
You'll need the cash.”
I didn't like that he was correct.
I went to the door.
His voice was the last one to stop me just before I left.
“Naledi.”
I turned.
It was impossible to tell what his face was saying.
If tomorrow night we find anything, it will be, “Whatever…”
He hesitated.
Then his eyes glinted for a moment, gold.
“…don't let me come near you at night.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
Damon looked away.
“So it's a full moon tomorrow.”
I came out of his office without a word.
I don't know what Damon Knight was.
I did not know the significance of his name Alpha being given to a stranger.
I didn't know why he looked at me like he was expecting the answer to a question he asked his whole life.
However, there was one thing that I knew.
I'd just signed a contract to be wed to the most dangerous man I'd ever known.
I didn't know that I'd find out his secret by tomorrow night.
