Three of them stopped squabbling when they overheard Victoria’s outburst, who is usually gentle. They all gave her an odd look as if she had gained another head.
“Paul, Coco, and Dad, why do we have to dispute when we can just call the number?” Victoria said and three felt embarrassed for not thinking in this way.
While waiting for refreshments, Chloe pulled her phone out and dialed the number she had received the message from.
The man holding the phone that had been ringing for a long was plainly astonished, as he smiled at the screen and forgot to respond.
Chloe became frustrated when no one answered the phone and glanced at Paul, who suggested, “Let’s try again one more time.”
She gave a nod before dialling the number once more, this time on speaker mode. At the third ring, the phone was answered this time.
“Chloe? I thought you never con... contact me,” a frigid voice answered the phone, followed by a few coughs. The voice was almost whisper-like in its weakness.
Everyone presents may hear the person’s laboured breathing. It struck them all by surprise, and they all wondered what happened to him.
While debating whether to hang up or not, they hear a door knock, a door opening, and footsteps.
On the other end of the phone call, a charming voice questioned him softly, “Sir, hvordan har du det nå?” once the person arrived at Liam's bedside.
(Sir, how do you feel at the moment?)
“Er du ny her?”
(Are you new around here?)
He questioned the nurse, nodding his head.
She nodded her head and opened her mouth to say something, but he cut her off by adding, “Place the tablets on the table and walk out.”
“Ja sir”
(Yes, sir.)
She responded as she turned to the left. “Legen rådet deg til å hvile nok til å komme deg helt etter forgiftning,” she remarked as she turned to face him at the door before stepping outside.
(Doctor advised you to get enough rest to recover fully from poisoning.)
Only then he realized he was still talking to Chloe on the phone and noticed that the conversation was still active.
So, after clearing his throat, he asked Chloe over the phone, “Is there anything I can do to help?”
Chloe regained consciousness upon hearing his voice. She wanted to reprimand him upon dwelling on what he had done, but her father and brother restrained her.
“Would you mind explaining, Mr.Wulfric?” Paul didn’t want to mince words, so he got right to the point. After a little period of silence, Liam coughed.
“I didn't have much of the time, Mr. Paul,” he murmured faintly. He didn't give them much time, asking “So, could you point out what you want to know.”
“Liam, could you clarify about the messages?” Chloe’s wrath was obvious in the tone she used since she was unable to control it.
“It’s literal meaning,” he answered dismissively. “However, you can gain your answers at the banquet tomorrow,” he added.
“Also, p… please ask your people to st… stop locating this phone. i… its was… waste of time” he said in a stuttered voice and his breath becomes shallower. They can hear the beeping sounds of machines.
It is true that before calling Liam, Chloe urged her team and George to find the caller’s whereabouts. But, to their astonishment, he spotted it, and they couldn’t trace it.
Chloe and the others struggle to hide their dismay.
“Where are you?” Chloe inquired, her face expressionless suppressing her emotions. But her heartbeat was rapid, and she felt a twinge deep within her heart.
He grinned in a self-deprecating fashion and added, “I... I’m delighted that... you asked Chloe?” before responding to her query.
“I’m in the hospital recovering from slow poisoning,” he explained. He heard gasps coming from the other line.
Chloe and the others were startled by his statement. Victoria had a pondering expression on her face, Stephen had a poker face, Paul grimaced, and his brows were knotted. Her heart trembled wildly, yet no one sensed the shift in her demeanour.
Unconsciously, she exclaimed, “What?” All turned their heads in her direction with astonished expressions. As Chloe felt uncomfortable with other people’s gaze, she restrained her feelings.
Liam smirked at her questioning and reiterated that he was poisoned, and only then they believed him. Paul cleared his throat after having a thought, drawing the attention of the other people there.
He questioned him, saying, “Mr. Wulfric, you went incognito solely for recovering, is there nothing else?” Chloe's ears perked up at this statement from Paul, and she became more aware of the situations.
“You’re remarkable, Mr. Paul, but I’m sorry to disappoint you by not spilling the beans, and I’m only here for my rehabilitation,” he said truthfully.
He said, with a little cough, “But like I said, you’ll have all your answers tomorrow.”
“Liam, how is the healing coming along?” Liam was questioned about his health by Stephen, who was watching him at all times.
He slightly smiled as he questioned Stephen again after recognising the worry in his voice, “Will you believe I have only a little chance of survival?”
Chloe and the others were stunned by his question, and her heart quivered. She was baffled as to why she was still influenced by him. She has moved on entirely from her married life and Liam since she now has a loyal and loving partner.
However, her heart was impacted, and she inadvertently spilled a single tear. Before anyone could see, she brushed it away and answered, “Of course not! The physicians you picked should be of the highest calibre since you are the great Liam Wulfric.”
“So, the likelihood of your survival should be high rather than remote,” she said after pausing for a moment. At the end, she scoffed.
“Who knows? If my fate has already been determined, consulting world-class doctors is a waste of time,” Liam chuckled.
“Anyway, I’m only curious about your stance, and regarding my recuperation the doctor told that if nothing goes wrong, I’ll need at least one month to recovery,” he said.
“Ok, good then you take care,” Stephen remarked as he waved farewell. Before he signalled Chloe to hang up the phone, they overheard him saying.
“Mr. Paul, Ms. Priscilla De Rossi, the world-renowned psychologist who is now touring South Tarus. If you wish, I can make some arrangements for you,” he remarked casually.
This sentence triggered a chain reaction of emotions in Chloe. Even indifferent Paul’s face betrayed indications of astonishment.
Chloe only asked him to get a therapist today, but Liam already knows. Paul couldn’t stop thinking about possibilities.
“Well, then, Mr.Wulfric, I’ll have to bother you for this,” Paul remarked after calming down. Chloe stared at her brother, who gave her a profound smile.
Liam chuckled and responded, “It’s not a problem at all.” He then hung up the phone and texted Priscilla’s information and address.
Chloe looked up her brother after reading the most recent message Liam had sent. Understanding his sister's expression, he motioned for her to go. Only she then felt relieved.
“I don’t think he’s responsible for Pixy Media going bankrupt,” Stephen eventually said, breaking the awkward silence.
“I agree, Coco, I’ve got this awful feeling that tomorrow’s banquet isn’t going to be as straightforward as it appears,” Paul concurred.
“Well, it’s not our concern, so we can enjoy the show from the side-lines,” Chloe replied as she rose and headed upstairs to her bedroom.
Paul shook his head and reached for his phone, dialling a number. He rose up and went outside the living room to answer the phone once it was connected.
“Hello! Do you have time for a meeting tomorrow morning, Mr. Elliott?” Paul questioned as soon as the phone call was connected.
Colton Elliot, Elliot Group’s heir, grinned at the question and answered, “And I presume it’s not just for me, isn’t it?”
“Yes, please bring Ms. Smith as well,” Paul added after a few seconds of silence. “I’d want to understand something from her.” His response was direct and to the point.
"Ok, then be at ‘The Pearl Diner’, room number 2110 on 10 AM,” Colton replied, then hung up without waiting for Paul’s answer. Paul grumbled and turned around to see Victoria gazing at him, puzzled.
