CHAPTER FOUR

Charlie couldn't sleep and she came downstairs to get water when she met her mom sorting out some documents in the living room. Alicia looked up and asked, "So, how did the date go?"

Charlie took a bottle of water and said, "It was fine mom. It was the best date ever. I can't wait for us to start dating."

Alicia nodded smiling, "I love your boldness sweetie, reminds me of my young self."

Charlie laughed and paused immediately, making the water she was holding drop on the ground. Alicia looked up and asked, "Are you okay?"

Charlie was panting really hard and Alicia asked, "Charlie, what is going on!! Talk to me!!"

Charlie almost broke down in tears saying, "Mother…..I….am a disgrace."

Alicia was confused already and asked, "What are you talking about Charlie?"

Charlie fell to the ground saying, "Kara….please mom...tell her to come right now."

    Alicia looked at the time, it was 10:30pm and said, "Charlie, it's late….but I'll call her." She took her phone and dialed Kara's number. 

Kara picked up her phone, "Hey ma'am Alicia. Is everything okay?"

Alicia looked at Charlie, "Kara, all is not well here. Charlie needs you right now. I don't know what happened to her. Please...I need you to come right away."

Kara looked at the time and said, "I really don't think I can ma'am. It's really late and I'm with my sister. Why don't I speak to her instead?"

Alicia sighed, "You really won't understand Kara. You know what….come with your sister." Then she cut the call.

Kara sighed and went to wake Beth up. Beth asked,"What is it?"

Kara took her jacket and said, "We need to go to Charlie's house. Her mom called me just now saying she's not well."

Beth yawned, "Oh come on Kara…..are you sure these people like you...cause from what I see, you're the help."

Kara threw Beth's white jacket at her and said, "Dress up and let's go."

Beth wore the jacket and asked, "Aren't you supposed to get a call from the company you applied for tonight?"

Kara, who barely heard what she said, answered, "Of course. Come on, let's go." Kara locked the house and they left. Meanwhile, Kara's phone was on the dining table. 

Kara got to Charlie's house around 10:52pm. She entered and saw Charlie still on the floor. She was crying now. She ran to her immediately asking, "Charlie, are you okay?"

Beth exclaimed immediately, "Woah! This is the most beautiful place I've ever entered!"

Alicia tapped Kara and said, "Take Charlie inside…..I'll take care of Beth."

Kara stood up with Charlie and took her inside. 

Beth was examining the glassware when Alicia asked, "Are they beautiful?"

Beth looked at her and said, "Yes...they are so beautiful. You must be Charlie's mom."

Alicia nodded and asked, "Is there anything you want because when you are at the Evans house, you get whatever you want."

Beth was open mouthed and asked, "You mean I can get anything I want if I ask?"

Alicia nodded and Beth smiled saying, "I would like to watch a movie...and I want a bucket full of chicken drumsticks and a big bowl of ice cream."

Alicia clapped her hands and three maids appeared. Alicia looked at Beth and said, "These are Jane, Brie and Nattie. They will give you whatever you want, they will provide whatever you ask for. Anything."

Beth went to hug Alicia and said, "Wow...thank you so much. Can I sit on the couch?"

Alicia laughed, "Of course you can, everything here is yours. Feel at home okay. I need to go check on Charlie and Kara." Then she left.

Beth smiled as she sat on the couch and said to herself, "Of course I would feel at home. It's no problem, no problem at all." Then she started ordering the maids.

Charlie was still panting when Alicia came in. Alicia looked at Kara asking, "Has she said anything yet? Any progress?"

Kara shook her head, "I really don't understand her ma'am. She hasn't said anything yet."

Alicia touched Kara and said, "I'm really sorry Kara for all these. I really don't like teenagers being out late hours like this. This is 11pm already."

     Hearing 11pm, Kara stood up immediately and said, "Oh God, I need to get my phone now." She ran outside and scrambled through her bag and jacket but didn't find her phone. She went back to Charlie's room but she didn't see it either. As soon as she wanted to leave the room, Charlie shouted, "Kara wait!"

Kara looked at her and asked, "Are you ready to talk now? I really don't have much time."

Charlie nodded and Kara said, "Go ahead." She was still searching for her phone with her eyes.

Charlie looked at her and said, "I am a disgrace to my followers on i********:. I forgot to tell them about my date with Max tonight. What would they think about me now? I didn't even take a picture of both of us or even a video. I……"

Kara cut her off asking, "Wait!! You mean you called yourself a disgrace because you didn't post on your i********: about you and Max and made me rush here on just what you could tell me on the phone?!"

Charlie stood up and walked towards her saying, "I just needed to tell you face to face."

Kara yelled, "What are you trying to tell me Charlie?!!"

Charlie looked afraid, Kara has never yelled at her before. "Oh come on Kara, don't get mad at me. You are the only one I could tell, besides you answer me every time and I knew you had nothing to do so you came here. Is your sister………"

Immediately Kara slapped her hard to the surprise of both Alicia and Charlie. 

Alicia stood up, "Kara….what was that for?"

Kara looked at Charlie angrily and yelled, "I came here rushing because I thought you had a big emergency…...and because of that, I left my phone at home making me lose my job opportunity!!! You brat!! Don't talk to me Charlie!!" Then she walked out of the room slamming the door hard.

    Beth was still watching her movie and eating chicken drumsticks when Kara came out with her bag and yelled, "Let's go."

Beth looked at her and asked, "For real? We haven't even spent an hour. Come on Kara, let's wait a little."

Kara shouted, "Beth, I said let's leave this instant."

Beth sat up and groaned, "Now we're at it again Kara. I'm enjoying myself here. I can't even have a good moment."

She looked at the TV as she stood up and said, "Who let the dog loose out now?"

That rude statement flared Kara up the more and she went over and slapped Beth. Beth held her face and raised her voice, "What was that for Kara?"

Kara looked at her, raising her voice as well, "Whenever I am angry and I tell you something and you refuse, I am really going to slap you."

Beth was almost crying and yelled, "I do not know what is wrong with you Kara! If you are angry at something, you really don't need to pass anything on me!! I am not leaving this place!!"

Immediately Kara pushed her to the floor, grabbed her hair and started dragging her out. Beth tried to fight back, screaming and yelling until Alicia came out and pleaded, "Kara, that's enough! Stop, please!!"

Kara stopped and Alicia went to help Beth up. She faced Kara saying, "I know you are angry with Charlie for making you lose your job opportunity but please do not take it up on your sister."

Beth released herself from Alicia and asked, "You mean she lost her job opportunity."

Alicia nodded and Beth looked at Kara and said, "But I reminded you to take your phone before we left and you said you took it."

Kara roughed her short straight brunette hair and looked at Alicia saying, "I'm really sorry to disrespect you ma'am, but we need to get going now." She grabbed Beth's hand and left. 

Alicia immediately went to Charlie's room and met Charlie looking at her cheek where Kara had slapped through the mirror and was crying. 

Alicia hissed and said, "You really need to stop crying Charlie."

Charlie looked at Alicia and said softly, "Mom, Kara slapped me for the first time."

Alicia sat beside her and said, "Listen to what you just said Charlie. Kara has never raised her hand on you. How would you let something like your stupid i********: followers cloud your judgement? Kara lost her job opportunity because of you and you know they do not have parents and she's struggling for her sister. She even beat her sister today….because of you!!!"

Charlie sniffed and hugged her mom. "I'm really sorry mom. I didn't mean to. I guess I cared more about my followers than my best friend."

Alicia pulled out of the hug and said, "Find a way to apologize to her. I need to sleep, have an early appointment with some clients tomorrow. I love you." She gave her a kiss on her forehead and left.

Kara sat down on the couch at home staring at her phone. The company had dropped a message for her already. It read;

   "WE ARE REALLY SORRY MISS KARA TURNER. WE CALLED YOU SEVERAL TIMES BUT NO RESPONSE. YOU WERE ONE OF OUR BEST SELECTIONS BUT SOMEONE ELSE HAS TAKEN YOUR SPOT. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME."

  Kara dropped her phone on the table and buried her face in her hands. Beth, who was watching her from the dining room, went to the table and read the message. She came in front of her and yelled, "But I told you to take your phone before we left and you said you took it….now look at what you did to my face!"

Kara looked at Beth and said softly, "I'm really sorry for hitting you Beth. I didn't mean to."

Beth went to sit beside her, "What really happened to Charlie?"

Kara told her everything and Beth shook her head saying, "You see Kara, I told you….you're the help."

Kara sighed and Beth said, "It's okay Kara. You don't have to worry, another job would come your way. I know how hard you're trying for both of us, and I'll help you get a job."

   Kara looked at her tearfully and Beth wiped her tears, "It's okay Kara. You are weird and ugly when you cry." She laughed and Kara hugged her saying, "Thank you Beth and I'm really sorry for hitting you."

Beth giggled and said, "Stop apologising. It's weird when you do that, because people always apologise to you."

Kara patted her head and said, "Come on, let's go to sleep." They switched off the lights and went to sleep."
