Chapter 1 - Running from the shadows
The drive to my newfound home was all a blur, as the car drive put my tired ass to sleep instantly. Running on little to no sleep, in the hopes that moving would maybe leave any unwanted demons behind. Luckily after scrolling on craigslit for what felt like an eternity, a somewhat gothic abandoned Victorian styled home, seemed like the best option at starting a new chapter in Pennsylvania.
Thunder cracking, both startling Liz awake and announcing the arrival of her new life. The ad did the home no justice. It was definitely a fixer upper, but the foundation was immortal, as it was never tarnished over the years of abuse from nature. The home seemed right out of a movie, more particularly the black and white Adam families TV. As much as i loved black and white movies and shows, the home was beautifully Erie.
"Great way to run away from my demons", mumbling to myself, half hoping that there was no eerie presence within the house itself.
"Whats that ma'am?" Her cab driver looked at her questiongly in the rear view mirror.
"Nothing", trying to hide the awkwardness out of my voice, but after being startled awake, there was no hiding anything.
As the car finally came to a halt, after driving up the ridiculously long drive way after the gated entrance, i tried to jump out as fast as possible to hide any further embarrassment. Grabbing the one pitiful suitcase and small bag, which carried all my life belongings, Liz paid the driver and lugged everything to the wrap-around porch of this new“ home”.
Being a private investigator, the urge of wanting to snoop around this rare find of a house, overtook the lack of sleep. Wondering why nobody wanted to buy this dilapidated mansion that had been condemned, it was time to look around. Luckily the cab was gone, because I might've been drooling while looking around in awe of the exterior, which held pointed arches, a steeply pitched roof, a tower with parapets and lookout access, and the beautiful dark decorative molding, gables, and trim.
My life outside of Pennsylvania was dark and condemned, bound by the demons of the past, naturally allowing this house speak to me. As there's 5 bedrooms it might be huge for a single female, but was also dirt cheap. But what better way to try to restart her life, than in a house that resembled the Adam's family mansion, which she loved as a kid when watching the shows.
After finishing her investigation of the exterior, being beyond satisfied with her new home, i desperately wanted to get settled. Trying to lug my things inside, in the hopes of unpacking, and crashing. Luckily the home was furnished, meaning not much work, and a nap sooner rather than later.
Using her skeleton key given to her by her realtor, and opened the double black doors. They creaked open to showcase the beautifully enchanting foyer. To some, the foyer may have been gothic. morbid or out of style. To Liz, it was as if the designer of the house pulled the architect right out of her dreams. Growing up, I was always labeled "abnormal," as I have a deep love of anything gothic, paranormal, or in relation to Halloween.
The foyer had a dilapidated elegance to it. The architecture and elements inside have a very old and worn look, but the last tenants took great care of their home, however dusty. The desaturated color palette, coupled with darker, moodier lighting, and the mysterious atmosphere really brought this house to its final creepy, kooky, spooky, and ooky look.
There was a grand staircase, made by hand, with dark carved wooden features, which would invite anyone to awe in the simplicity of craftsmanship. As if levitating Liz was pulled right to the bottom of the stairs.
"f**k being tired", mumbling to myself again like a psycho, as I lugged myself up the stairs, in the hopes of finding a suitable room to unpack and maybe get some rest eventually or even finish some work.
The aura of the house had somehow woke her up, more than coffee would ever do in her lifetime. Mind you, my entire die4, practically consisted off coffee, emergy drinks, and any fast food but that came with the job. Being a private investigator, her life was overtaken by long work days blurring into nights, mixed with insomnia, meant coffee and energy drinks were my solitude in her life, than again I did choose to pursue this career and lifestyle.
A red velvet carpet, lined the upstairs hallway. The walls were painted with statement colors that most home owners would steer clear of. A mix of black accent finishings longed the dark Grey walls. Pictures of presumably dead family members, vintage weaponry, preserved specimens, and other morbidly antique odds and ends put a spin onto this home.
Oddly enough, the interior design of this household put me at ease. As she was running away from her demonic past in Manhattan, the true appreciation of how the morbid house truly reflected on the obstacles of my early years in life and allowed me ro have a new beginning to start somewhere where I truly felt like I fit in somewhere for once.
Stumbling, like the clutz she was, into the first door she's seen in this ridiculously long, enchanting hallway. Liz pushed the doors open, the creaked like the main doors adding extra character, or maybe extra work. By some miracle, she had stumbled upon what seemed to be the master suit, by the size of the room and the enqusit.
The room was painted a dark purple, which was a surprise in comparison to the rest of the house. It was near black but pulled the room together ever so beautifully. The large California king size bed, was clearly made by hand as it was carved out of dark wood, stood very tall, in order to hold the sheer black curtains that hid the sleeper, from anything lurking in the night.
An antique couch lined the end of the bed with some beautiful fabric woven in, a wooden closet looked like it was out of beauty of the beast, ready to open up to talk to you about your daily wardrobe. In awe i practically threw my stuff in front of it to save the unpacking for later. In a dream like trance, I walked towards the balcony. Deep red, French doors, with some spiderwebs carved into the corners took my breath away. Cautiously pushing the doors open, and walking onto her balcony, the perfect getaway to do work was awaiting her.
The balcony had two carved mahogany chairs all upholstered in a stunning custom sage leather fabric and looked very comfy to relax in. Walking towards the mantel, to over look a once beautiful garden, it was overthrown by very few weeds, she looked into the rose garden. Liv recognized the David Austin roses for their disease resistance, repeat blooms, and large color selection. She fell in love with these roses, as she found her own characteristics in them. Within the mix of colors she also found, a shrub variety mixed in, called Munstead Wood, is blood red and highly fragrant.
For now it was time to pull on a heavy cardigan, as autumn was soon approaching, and find her laptop. What better place to ease into her work life than her enchanting balcony.
