"Snap!"

Aaron slapped me, forcing me to kneel on the ice surface at a chilling minus 20°C.

"Heather, you're truly vicious! Katherine is already pitiable with her cancer, and you stole her cancer report just to gain my sympathy!"

"I wish it were you who got cancer, and Katherine who was healthy!"

I looked up into Aaron's eyes, filled with coldness and loathing, and gave a bitter smile. Aaron, you're right.

It was me who had cancer, and I didn't steal hers; it was she who stole my cancer report to play the victim.

I thought Aaron would be happy to know the truth.

I had knelt in the snow all night, never imagining I’d freeze to death instead of succumbing to cancer. "Splash." Ice-cold water flooded the bed, snaking through my blanket and soaking my clothes. The biting chill ate away the last bit of warmth I had left. "Heather, slacking off today, aren't we?" I forced my eyes open, frost already forming on my lashes. Aaron towered over me, his gaze as cold as the morning air. "No," I stammered, my teeth chattering as I forced myself out of bed. Without bothering to change, I started my daily routine. Every morning, I prepared Aaron's breakfast, cleaned every corner of the villa, and did the laundry. Afterward, I knelt before his parents' portraits for hours, atoning for my sins. I'd had feelings for Aaron for nearly a decade and finally married him when I turned twenty. I imagined a life full of happiness, but those hopes crumbled on our wedding morning when I accidentally caused his parents' deaths. We’d been married for four years, four long years filled with revenge and cruelty. Over time, Aaron’s hatred began to fade, and his attitude toward me softened. I clung to the hope that one day he’d let go of his hatred, and that we could finally have a happy life together. Then came the cancer diagnosis. The doctor said I had, at best, a few weeks left to live. Holding that diagnosis report, tears streamed down my face. I'd never live to see Aaron forgive me completely. All I wanted was a bit of pity in my final days, a few moments of warmth with him as husband and wife before the end. But then, Katherine stole my medical report and falsely claimed she was the one with cancer. I knew Aaron despised liars. The goodwill I had painstakingly built up over the past four years crumbled because of this lie. His disgust flared up again. Aaron’s breakfast was simple. An egg sandwich and a cup of freshly ground coffee. As I prepared it, still wearing my damp clothes, I shivered with cold, yet my forehead burned with fever. I managed to place the breakfast on the table, but then everything went dark. When I opened my eyes again, I saw a pair of familiar Italian leather shoes standing before me. A cool hand brushed against my burning forehead. My pupils fluttered as I met Aaron's icy gaze. He frowned, his voice tinged with impatience. "Let the maid handle the chores today. After breakfast, come with me to the hospital." My mind was clouded by fever, and tears welled up in my eyes. “Aaron, you still care about me, don’t you?” His frown deepened. “Heather.” Before he could finish, Katherine’s soft, pleading voice interrupted. “Aaron, I don’t want to go to the hospital anymore. I can’t bear facing that despair again.” Hearing her voice, Aaron immediately left my side and went to her. My breath caught in my chest. I forced myself up from the floor. He reached Katherine and gently wiped the faint tear tracks from her face, his voice soft and soothing. “Katherine, don't be scared. I’ll go with you. Maybe it’s just a misdiagnosis?” “Don’t be afraid. I’ve contacted the best specialists. Even if it is cancer, I’ll fight it with you.” “I don’t want to go.” “Be good, Katherine.” “Kiss me, and I’ll agree. Otherwise, I won’t go.” A cold chill spread from the soles of my feet, slowly numbing my entire body. Yet, I couldn’t look away as Katherine clung to Aaron's shirt, her expression coy. Aaron frowned at her. After a pause, he sighed and leaned down, his stern face drawing closer to hers. Suddenly, he turned to me, his brows furrowing once more, his voice cold. “What are you standing there for? Go change and get Katherine’s coat.” My heart felt like it had been bitten by a poisonous snake. The same frown, yet it looked so different when directed at Katherine compared to me. For her, it was an indulgent helplessness. For me, it was cold disgust. “Yes.” Under his contemptuous gaze, I hurried to my room to change, then fetched Katherine’s coat. Katherine whined, “Aaron, why are you taking her?” “She even stole my cancer report! I don’t want to go to the hospital with her!” “She’s so malicious. I’m afraid she’ll hurt me.” “Katherine, be good.” This time, Aaron ignored her tantrum. Katherine sat in the passenger seat, so I had to bend down and get into the back. I watched as she coquettishly asked Aaron to fasten her seatbelt. He complied without hesitation, then patted her head and reassured her not to be too nervous or upset. I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat and quietly fastened my seatbelt, turning my gaze to the swirling snow outside the window. The snowy landscape blurred past. I thought that once we reached the hospital, the truth would finally come to light. When Aaron learned that I hadn’t lied, that I was the one dying of cancer, and Katherine was the healthy one… Would he be relieved?
