At least it didn't feel like living alone anymore, for Melissa. After the day Asher promised, he was true to his word, he didn't yell at her or ignore her like she did not exist. They were going pretty well. Melissa had continued her college after one week of marriage and it had been normal. Her friends did ask her questions like why wasn't she happy or why was she back so early. But she dismissed them every time. In her family, marriage ceremonies weren't too big so friends weren't invited. Only family was involved from both sides so all she could do for her best friend was to explain everything to her, but she didn't want to tell her and then gain pity looks from her. She didn't want that.
In past month, Asher had been cooperative with her or at least he tried to be. They would eat together, have coffee together or even watch TV together but both were still not at the stage of being friends. They would make small conversations also. And when Melissa sensed that he was annoyed or in no mood to talk, she would leave him alone to avoid any arguments. In this small time, Melissa realized how sophisticated and conservative he was. He remained himself all the time and he wasn't also much of a talker but he was a good listener though. She also noticed that he was a serious sort of person who smiled occasionally. In past one month, he might have just smiled twice or thrice at her. But maybe that was because he didn't even know her and perhaps he was more outgoing with people he knew. His attire and aura showed nothing else but arrogance and elegance. He seemed to be arrogant and egoistic but once she started talking to him, she realized that he was extremely polite person. And Melissa didn't know if she should feel lucky to having witnessed him showing emotions like when he yelled at her. Because he never yelled, not at anyone. He would just furrow his brows and frown at something he didn't like, but he never yelled. Asher helped her with her school assignments and even taught her somethings that she had difficulty in understanding. What they both ignored in past one month was the sour topic of one's brother and one's ex fiancé. Not even once did they discuss it and she didn't think there was any need to.
Melissa didn't know how he would react if she brought up the topic because he seemed to get annoyed over small things. So she avoided the topic and she didn't have any desire to discuss her ex fiancé with her husband. She at least knew it was wrong. No matter what the circumstances were but he was her husband now and no husband would want his wife to talk about any other man. Or maybe that wasn't the case and Asher just didn't give a s**t. She couldn't pin point his personality, she couldn't describe it to anyone. So when Veronica, her best friend asked about her husband she didn't know how to explain it to her. "So, when do I get to meet him?" Asked Veronica while they walked towards the exit. Veronica had her own car so she could drive but Melissa did not. Asher's family chauffeur picker her up daily and dropped too.
"I don't know V," she shrugged in nonchalance. She knew Asher would not like to meet her friends. No matter how good he was, they were still just acquainted yet.
"Why? Can't I at least see him, his photo?" She frowned. Veronica understood why Melissa was so conservative so she understood why she couldn't do that.
"I guess you have seen him on tabloids." Melissa smiled sweetly at her. Asher was a rich person, young, handsome and owner of family oriented business. So it wasn't a surprise that he was famous. The reason why Asher was the CEO was that he was the eldest son, he was two years older than Salah so his father handed him the company.
"Seriously? Tabloids? You could have told me that he was a celebrity Melissa! I sometimes think I am not even your BFF." She crossed her arms over her chest and frowned.
"I told you he was rich," but didn't tell you that he is my ex fiancé's brother. She wanted to add but stopped herself. "Okay I promise I will introduce you to him as soon as possible," she smiled sheepishly at her friend who rolled her eyes.
"Fine whatever!" Veronica sighed and tucked a lose piece of her blonde hair behind her ear. Melissa noticed that her friend had frozen and her eyes were fixed on a certain spot. Suddenly, Veronica whistled and raised her eyebrows in frenzy. Melissa frowned and followed the direction of her sight and she stopped herself from gasping.
What the hell is he doing here?
Suddenly, she felt nervous and didn't know how to act. Oh God why did he have to show up just like that? She pinched her eyes close and then opened them again to see he was not illusion, he was there. Melissa heard murmurs and gasping around her and her worries grew even more.
Did he really have to tell everyone that he was her husband? She liked to keep it that way, a secret, she didn't want any fan following of Asher trying to befriend her just because she knew him.
"What the..." Veronica asked. She was confused that why this man was standing like a boss, resting his body against his audi? He seemed to be waiting for someone.
Of course it would be her. Huh! That was new. Well, the damage had been done so she needed to make a move before everyone started gathering around her.
"I'll call you later," she told Veronica who opened her mouth to protest but by then Melissa was already in the middle of the road.
"Melissa! Where are you going?" Veronica yelled behind her and being extremely reckless Melissa turned around to face her friend and a car almost hit her.
Asher heard a voice of someone calling Melissa so he lifted his head from the phone and faced her. There she was making her way towards him. Just when he straightened his posture, she turned around and a car almost hit her.
"Melissa!!" He yelled out of consciousness and his eyes went wide with fear. At the same time another woman yelled her name but thank God Melissa was okay. She seemed to be in shock as she jumped back and placed a hand over her heart. Asher noticed a woman running towards her and at the same time he mirrored her actions.
He ran towards her with his heart almost threatening to burst out of his chest. He jogged towards her and grabbed her both shoulders to check if she was okay or not.
"God! Are you crazy? Who the hell stops in the middle of road?" He shook her by shoulder and scolded her. "You-" he pursed his lips and sighed. She was safe, nothing had happened to her but that didn't mean that his heart didn't stop beating for a moment. If something had happened to her, her father would have dug a grave for him. He didn't like that he had to take care of someone now.
Melissa stood there shocked with her hands hanging by her sides. Was she crazy? What was she thinking being this reckless? She had already caused enough problems for everyone now if anything happened to her what would have happened to her family?
"You good?" He asked, as she tilted her head to look up at him. She nodded weakly and lowered her gaze. He sighed with relief and stepped back. Then he turned to come face to face with a woman with her jaw hanging to ground. He wanted to snort at her but that was the normal reaction people gave him wherever he went.
Melissa's heart pounded loudly in her ears and for some strange reason her cheeks were heating up.
She blinked and came out of the trance to finally introduce her husband to her best friend who had been dying to meet him.
"Um...Veronica this Asher. Asher this is uh...Veronica...my best friend." She couldn't even form correct words. It felt like her brain was on blank mode, it was not working. Veronica cleared her throat and thrust out her hand for Asher to shake.
"Nice to meet you!" She smiled sweetly at him. Melissa knew by the looks of her friend, she would demand an explanation. Melissa exhaled and watched them both, desperately praying that Asher would shake her hand.
"Nice to meet you too, Miss. Veronica" He nodded while shaking her hand and Melissa sighed in relief, she thought he would just ignore her and move on. "I would have loved to talk to you but we really need to leave. Our flight is in an hour." He said making Melissa frown.
Where were they going? He had not told her anything about going anywhere and besides that, she had university to attend, he couldn't just take her anywhere whenever he wanted. But she saved the questions for later.
"Of course, I understand." Veronica smiled at him and gave a curious glance to Melissa to which she shrugged and shook her head, telling her that she didn't know.
"Come, we need to leave." He turned towards Melissa and she saw over his shoulder where Veronica was wiggling her eyebrows with a huge grin on her face. She pinched her index finger and thumb together making a perfect sign, and mouthed 'hot'. Melissa had the urge to giggle but she suppressed it and pressed her lips to stop her laughter.
"Bye." Melissa waved her fingers at Veronica and turned around to go with Asher. He placed his hand on the small of her back and ushered her forward, oblivious of their small talk. Veronica signaled her to call her later and she nodded before going with Asher.
"Where are we going? Why don't I know about it?" She asked looking up at him, ignoring the heat from his hand on her back. Asher looked straight a head and ignored her question for the time being.
"Asher? Where are we going and why?" She had an urge to blush at the word 'we'. She prayed that he didn't notice it because that would be really embaarrassing. Like a gentleman that he was, Asher opened the door for her and she sat in without complaining. She knew she would get answers so she kept quiet. After sitting behind the wheel, Asher started the car and sped off.
"Unlike you sweetheart, I like to concentrate while crossing the road," well, that was offensive. She opened her mouth to answer him but decided against it as she wanted answers. "I am going to Australia for business trip and I don't want you to be here by yourself. You know, the paparazzi and all that stuff. Besides, you are not used to living alone so I decided to take you with me. Don't worry about your classes, it's just few days," he said putting on his ray bans.
He had explained everything but she still wanted to ask him why it was so important to take her with him? She could be perfectly fine by herself or he could leave her with her family. So, she voiced her thoughts.
"But I can go to my parents' for two days. In that case, I won't be missing any classes," she turned and faced him. She noticed the tension in his jaw which she refused to understand.
"For God's sake Melissa! You're married now! Your parents will ask thousand questions if I left you there. And I told you it's not a big deal." He sighed and massaged his hair with his fingers. Melissa gulped. She felt strange about it, why was he so persistent to take her? For all she knew her parents would totally understand and won't ask questions. So what was he thinking?
She didn't want to argue so she just nodded and mumbled a small 'okay'. After that she remained silent.
