New Doctor In Town
Monday came too fast again. I literally rolled out of bed, put my hair in a messy bun, scrubs on, and ran out the door. Barely clocked in on time and forgot my lunch.
Sam peaked in my office as soon as I sat down. “Soooooo tell me all about Saturday night girl! I was waiting for you to text me, but didn’t want to bother you if you were enjoying your breakfast in bed all weekend…” she winked, and pulled her chair closer to my desk as she leaned in for the juicy details. Sam didn’t really have a filter, she didn’t care that we were at work, or if anyone heard our conversation.
“I’ll catch you at lunch I promise! Dr. Harvey has an emergency case I really have to get working on before he jumps down my throat again”. I said while rolling my eyes.
“Fine, but I need the x rated version, don’t skimp on the details like last time!” She said with a shrug. That girl. She lived for a good story, so she could live vicariously through anyone.
My phone buzzed and I glanced down to see Nick’s name “Hey gorgeous can’t wait to…” Janice knocked on my door before I could even finish reading. I hurried to put my phone away but she saw me. “Hey Lexi! Just a reminder not to be on your phone in patient areas. We have some guests and students touring today. Don’t want to give them the wrong impression of our office. Also Dr. Harvey needs you to get that patient’s cardiac clearance signed, can you take care of that first thing?”
“I’m on it!” I said.
The morning went by fast. Mondays were always so busy with all the doctors seeing patients in the clinic but two. I got Dr. Harvey’s surgery patient taken care of, scheduled several patients for some outpatient testing, and a few surgeries. 12:01 and Sam was knocking on my door “So I’m waiting spill…”
“I mean he was nice I guess” I smirked.
“And. Did you sleep with him” she snapped.
I jumped up to close my office door and clocked out on my computer. “Well let’s just say we tried. We both just had way too much to drink, and he couldn’t…you know… “ She spit out her green tea “Seriously?! He got whiskey ****! I mean did he at least have something good to offer you for next time?”
I laughed “he was average, but the conversation was just dead. We didn’t have anything in common. Pretty sure he only wanted one thing, but he couldn’t even make that happen”.
“Well time to swipe right on some more people, there’s plenty more where he came from. Girllll!” she exclaimed “let me tell you what Jaden did! You know how we’ve been trying to potty train him, Well John and I tried to sneak away from the kids 2 minutes to the bedroom, while they were watching a movie. We didn’t even get started and Ava came banging on the door to tell us he was peeing on the floor! I swear I don’t know if we will ever get a chance!”
I scarfed down a protein shake for lunch and got right back to work after. Things slowed down a little in the afternoon so I got my phone out to look at my social media. I swear it’s like everyone my age was getting married, having babies, buying houses. Gosh I felt like I was 30 going on 55, the only one out of my friends group with nothing exciting going on. I saw the lobby door opening and heard Janice’s unmistakable voice, and quickly through my phone in the drawer and pretended I was working on something.
Janice ushered a group of older gentlemen through the hall. All dressed in business attire with salt and pepper hair. She had been looking to find a new urologist for our practice for a while, but it was hard to find someone in the area that was young enough to be familiar with the robotic surgery procedures, but experienced enough to handle our unique patient cases. The last potential she made an offer to a few months prior fell through when the hospital couldn’t offer him as much money as he wanted.
As soon as the door shut behind them, it quickly opened again. I looked up to notice a young man rushing through. He couldn’t have been older than mid thirties, his black collared shirt was pressed tightly against his chest and wrapping around his biceps. His sleeves rolled up just enough to see his tattoos covering his forearm. His dress slacks were fitted in all the right places, leaving little to the imagination. He had a taper fade haircut, with a hard side part cut in his dark hair and the most gorgeous green eyes. There was no way he was with the tour group.
Before I had a chance to pick up my jaw from the floor he popped his head in my office. “Hey! I just lost the tour group of docs, did they go straight down this hall?” He asked. I stuttered out an “uh huh” and pointed, losing all train of thought. Two seconds later I got a message on our inter office app. It was Sam “Omg. Did you see the young one in the black shirt? Girl I’m sweating in here lol.” I responded with a quick overheated emoji face and finished out the rest of my patients for the day.
5 o’clock couldn’t come fast enough. Nick had texted me 3 more times asking if I wanted to get together for dinner and drinks. Nick has everything going for him. Well sort of. He was a bartender at a high end restaurant and club downtown owned by a local celebrity. He was tall, had a very athletic body, and beautiful blue eyes. He was nice, but there was just no substance there. I was beginning to think I didn’t have a “type” or that my type was just non existent.
I was married young when I was only 22 and after we divorced a few years later and I started dating I just had the worst luck. Not that I didn’t have plenty of fun at the same time, but never came across a guy I could actually see a future with. Honestly they were all just f*** boys, but at this point in my life I was perfectly fine with that.
I hadn’t answered Nick all day and as soon as I got to my car he called. I was bored and didn’t have any plans so I answered and apologized for being too busy to answer all day. He immediately started apologizing about Saturday night and his lack of performance. He was off Mondays from the restaurant and promised he’d make it up to me if I’d give him a second chance to take me out. He offered to pick me up at 6:30 and I agreed. Sam came our right behind me, so we stood at our cars talking for a minute before we were interrupted by the young doctor that was on the tour.
“I’m so sorry to interrupt you ladies! I went back to the office but the doors were already locked. I knocked but no one ever came and I think I left my phone inside. Could one of you possibly open the door or call someone to let me in? I would greatly appreciate it!”
“I’ve gotta run to get my son from daycare, but Lexi would be glad to let you in, right Lexi?” Sam said with a devilish wink. “Umm yeah no problem, I’ve got a key” I said as we walked back towards the building. My hands were trembling, I don’t know why I was so nervous around this man, you’d think I’d never seen an attractive man my age.
“So Lexi, I don’t think I formally introduced myself early when I stumbled into your office. I’m Dr. Roberts, but you can call me Drake”. “Nice to officially meet you Dr. Roberts.” I said as I unlocked the door to our building. I escorted him in, and showed him to the conference room where he thought his phone was, but we couldn’t find it. He asked me to call it from my phone and we walked around the office until we heard it ringing from the bathroom counter. He thanked me. We walked out I locked up and we headed back to our vehicles. Of course he was driving a fresh off the lot Range Rover that was all blacked out. Doctors always had to show off their money in the form of cars and houses.
“Thanks so much Lexi, I’ll see you around I’m sure.” He smiled and got in his Range Rover and drove away.
