THE PRICE OF REVENGE
Robert was a young, vibrant man, barely twenty-eight years old, but the burden of the world seemed to rest heavily upon his shoulders that morning. He stood outside the doctor's office, his hands trembling and his heart pounding against his chest as he waited desperately for news about his sick father. Behind the closed doors of the hospital ward, his father lay almost lifeless on a hospital bed, connected to machines that beeped at intervals. His once-strong body had grown weak, and his face, which had always carried a warm smile whenever he looked at his son, was now pale and exhausted. Robert had spent the entire night praying that his father would survive. He had refused to sleep, refused to eat, and barely touched the water someone had offered him. All he could think about was the man who had sacrificed everything to give him a better life. When the nurse finally stepped out of the doctor's office, Robert immediately rushed toward her. "Please, tell me something. How is my father doing?" he asked anxiously, searching her face for a little hope. The nurse paused, and the expression on her face made his stomach tighten. "Mr. Robert, your father's condition is critical. His health is deteriorating rapidly, and he needs urgent surgery. However, we cannot proceed until the required amount has been paid in full." Robert stared at her in disbelief. "How much?" he asked, although he already feared the answer. "Fifty thousand dollars." For a moment, he thought he had heard her incorrectly. "Fifty thousand dollars?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "Yes. I'm sorry, but that is what is required before we can begin the surgery. We cannot afford to delay much longer. If his condition continues to worsen without treatment, I'm afraid we may lose him." The nurse's words struck Robert like a thunderbolt. He staggered backward, his legs suddenly feeling too weak to support him. Lose him? No. That was impossible. His father could not die. Not now. Not when he was the only family Robert had left in the world. "Oh, God!" he cried, running both hands through his hair. "What am I supposed to do now?" The nurse offered him a sympathetic look, but there was little else she could do. "I'm truly sorry," she said before turning to attend to her other patients. "Please, wait!" Robert hurried after her, tears gathering in his eyes. "Please, I'm begging you. You have to help me. I don't want my father to die!" The nurse stopped and turned around. Robert dropped to his knees in front of her, no longer caring who was watching. His pride meant nothing compared to the life of the man who had raised him. "Please, I beg you in the name of the God you serve. Help me save my father. I don't have fifty thousand dollars right now, but I promise I will pay. I will work for it. I will do anything necessary. Just please, let the doctors begin the surgery before it's too late." His voice broke as he struggled to speak through his tears. "My father is all I have. He's the only person who has stood by me since I was born. Please, don't let me lose him." The nurse looked down at him, visibly troubled by his desperation. "I understand how painful this must be for you, Robert, but there are hospital procedures we must follow. I cannot authorize surgery without the required payment. I'm sorry, but I have other patients who need my attention." With that, she walked away. Robert remained on the floor for several seconds, staring blankly at the space where she had been standing. The hospital corridor seemed unusually quiet, although people were moving around him. Somewhere nearby, a child was crying. A doctor hurried past with a file in his hand. A telephone rang repeatedly. Yet none of it reached him. His entire world had narrowed to one terrible thought: he might lose his father. After several minutes, Robert slowly rose to his feet and wiped his face with the back of his hand. He could not afford to waste another second. If there was even the smallest chance that his father would wake up and recover, he had to hold on to it. He hurried toward the ward. As he entered, he found his father lying motionless on the bed. His chest rose and fell weakly, and his eyes were closed. The sight made Robert's heart ache. He approached the bed and gently held his father's hand. "Dad," he whispered. "It's me. I'm here." For a few seconds, there was no response. Then, slowly, his father's eyelids fluttered open. "Robert..." the older man murmured. Robert immediately leaned closer. "Yes, Dad. I'm here. I'm right here." His father managed a faint smile. "My son." The simple words nearly broke Robert's heart. He bent forward and pressed his father's hand against his cheek, trying desperately to conceal the tears gathering in his eyes. "You're awake," he said, forcing a smile. "That's good, Dad. That's very good. You just need to rest, and you'll be fine. The doctors will take care of you." His father studied him quietly. Despite his weakened condition, he seemed to recognize the fear Robert was trying so hard to hide. "Don't worry too much about me, my son," he said slowly. "Whatever happens, I want you to be strong." Robert shook his head immediately. "Please, don't talk like that. You're going to recover. We haven't even done the surgery yet, and once we do, you'll be back on your feet. You'll see." His father took a shallow breath. "Robert, listen to me." "No, Dad. I don't want to hear anything about what might happen. You're going to get better." "Sometimes," his father continued gently, "life doesn't happen the way we want it to. If I don't make it, I need you to promise me something." Robert's eyes filled with tears. "Don't say that, Dad. Please." "Promise me you'll remain strong. And, my son, don't be too trusting of people. Don't allow your kindness to become the reason you suffer. I have learned that lesson the hard way." Robert frowned. "What do you mean, Dad?" His father looked away, and a shadow crossed his face. "I made mistakes in my life. Some of those mistakes have cost me more than I ever imagined." Robert wanted to ask him more questions, but the weakness in his father's voice frightened him. He squeezed his hand. "We'll talk about everything when you get better. I promise. You'll come home, and we'll sit together like we always do. I'll make you your favorite meal, and you'll complain that I've put too much salt in it." His father let out a faint, tired laugh. For a moment, Robert allowed himself to believe that everything would be all right. Then he remembered the fifty thousand dollars. "Dad, there's something I need to ask you." His father turned his eyes toward him. "What is it?" "You once told me that someone owed you a huge amount of money. You said he had refused to pay you for years. Is that money still outstanding?" His father remained silent for a moment before answering. "Yes. It's been six years now, and the man has refused to pay me a single dollar." Robert's expression changed. "Six years? Dad, why didn't you tell me how serious the situation was?" "I didn't want you to worry about things you couldn't control." "But I need that money now. Your surgery costs fifty thousand dollars, and I don't have it. If this man pays what he owes you, perhaps we can save you." His father's eyes grew heavy with sadness. "I have tried everything, my son. I called him countless times. I begged him to remember the agreement we made, but he refused to listen. I eventually stopped expecting anything from him." Robert clenched his jaw. "What's his name?" His father hesitated before giving him the man's name. "Do you still have his phone number?" Robert asked urgently. "Yes, I believe I do." His father struggled to reach for his phone, but Robert gently took it from him and searched through the contacts until he found the number. "Let me try calling him," Robert said. He stepped a short distance away from the bed and dialed. The phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. Nobody answered. Robert ended the call and tried again. Still nothing. He tried a third time, then a fourth. Each unanswered call seemed to deepen the anger building inside him. "Pick up the phone!" he muttered under his breath. "For once in your life, just pick up!" He turned toward his father. "Dad, I've been calling him, but he isn't answering. I'll keep trying. I won't stop until I get him to pay what he owes you." There was no response. Robert frowned and returned to the bedside. "Dad?" His father lay motionless, his eyes closed. "Dad, can you hear me?" Robert touched his shoulder gently. "Father?" Still nothing. A sudden wave of fear swept through him. He shook his father's arm, first gently, then more desperately. "Dad! Dad, wake up!" When his father failed to respond, Robert stumbled backward. "No. No, no, no. Please, God, no!" He rushed toward the door and screamed for help. "Doctor! Somebody, please! Come quickly!" Within moments, the doctor and a nurse hurried into the ward. Robert stood beside the bed, shaking uncontrollably as they examined his father. He watched the doctor's face, searching for some sign of hope. But the longer the examination continued, the more dreadful the silence became. Finally, the doctor slowly straightened. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "We've lost him." For a moment, Robert did not understand the words. He stared at the doctor as though he were speaking a language Robert had never heard before. "Lost him?" he repeated. "What do you mean you've lost him? He's right here!" The doctor lowered his eyes. "Your father has passed away." The words shattered whatever remained of Robert's strength. He staggered toward the bed and fell to his knees, taking his father's lifeless hand in both of his. "Dad?" His voice was little more than a whisper. "Dad, please. Open your eyes." He waited. Nothing happened. "Father, please! You promised me you wouldn't leave me!" Tears streamed down his cheeks as he clutched his father's hand against his chest. "You told me you would always be here. You told me I would never have to face this world alone!" His cries echoed through the ward. "Why would you leave me? Why would you leave me just like Mom did?" Robert had been only a newborn when his mother died during childbirth twenty-eight years earlier. He had never known the warmth of her embrace or the sound of her voice. His father had filled that emptiness with a love so complete that Robert had never truly felt deprived of a mother. His father had been his protector, his teacher, his friend, and his entire world. Whenever other children spoke about their mothers, his father would hold him close and remind him that he was loved. Whenever life became difficult, his father found a way to make things work. He had sacrificed his own happiness, abandoned the possibility of marrying again, and devoted his life to raising his only child. And now, the one person who had always promised to stay was gone. Robert lowered his head onto his father's chest and wept until his throat hurt. The doctors eventually gave him some time alone with the body. For several minutes, he remained there, unable to move. Then, slowly, his tears began to dry, and something unfamiliar settled inside him. It was not peace. It was anger. He remembered the fifty thousand dollars. He remembered the unanswered calls. He remembered begging a nurse for help while his father lay dying. And he remembered the man who had refused to pay a debt that might have saved his father's life. Robert lifted his head and looked at his father's face. "I will find him," he whispered. His voice was quiet, but every word carried a terrible certainty. "I don't know how long it will take, and I don't know what I'll have to do, but I will find him. He will pay for what he has done to us." He gently covered his father's body with a sheet and stood beside the bed for one final moment. "I promise you, Dad. I will make him understand what it means to lose everything." That day, something inside Robert changed forever. The loving son who had once believed that kindness could solve almost any problem disappeared beneath the weight of grief. In his place emerged a man who believed that revenge was the only justice left to him. And he intended to make someone pay.
