Chapter One
Chloe: It's been two weeks since I came back home, I instantly went back to work at the cafe and unfortunately have not heard anything from William since then. I stood in front of my bathroom mirror and stared at myself. Slowly I put my t-shirt on and tied my hair back into a pony-tail, I grabbed my phone and left the bathroom shutting off the light. I went over the my bed and sat down to put my shoes on then I got up and left my apartment for work, I made it to the cafe in about ten minutes and found my manager waiting over by her car. "Where have you been?" She asked, I shrugged and looked away "I decided to walk today, but I'm early for my shift." I replied as I walked up to her. She smiled and laughed slightly. "Alway's are, how was the walk?" I nodded and returned the smile, though it felt fake I thought it was the right thing to do. "You ready for today?" I asked, "Of course!" She responded as we walked to the door of the cafe together. We had fifteen bulk orders due by twelve PM today and that only gives us a few hours to get that done. After a couple of hours I paused from the coffee I was making and looked up at the clock, it read eleven thirty so I made a note that I only had half an hour to get the rest of the order done. "Excuse me?" a customer called out from the counter. I turned to explain that I would be there in one minute and I found Mae standing there smiling. She waved laughed slightly and waved. I quickly wiped my hands on my apron and walked over to her, "Hello?" I asked raising an eyebrow, "I have news!" She stated. Mae: After the ball father gave me the option to go back to work where I was moved to by him or if I wanted to work in the office with him, after thinking about it I decided that I wanted to stay as close to him as possible to keep working towards trying to figure out what happened to my brother. I walked into the office, my heels clicking against the floor tiles. My father set this office up for me when I chose to work alongside him like William did, I try to make the office look more lively and more colorful, but once I find something that I like and add it something else gets changed to a duller color by my father. The office is decorated however, with two couches, a coffee table, some bright green plants and flowers. I have beautiful big windows on the left side of the room, and my desk is on the left side facing the windows. I also have two chairs facing my desk. I walked over to my desk and sat down, I turned on the computer and leaned back in my desk while it warmed up, my father gave me the task that William had received from him, which was to find others 'like us' however that's just the people that found the same plant my father did. Unfortunately, I have been coming up extremely short, which has been making my father angry. Once my computer loaded up I started getting to work with the search, after about two hours my father's secretary Anna walked in carrying a stack of papers. "Your father requested that I give these to you to file, there's some that need to be shredded, some need to be put in the right areas, and there are sticky notes for everything." She grinned and placed the piles of paper down on the desk. "He said you may take your time, but get it done by the end of today." I gave her a small smile, but I decided not to respond, It's hard, as not only is Anna her fathers secretary, but they are also....Well, the term lovers not does quite suit my father. Once she turned to leave I looked down at the stack of papers and let out a sigh. "Isn't this supposed to be your job?" I asked raising my eyebrows, "It is, but he said you could do it." She replied letting out a barking laugh. As the hours went by I flipped through the paperwork, each sticky note had a new message and each one was clearly written for Anna. A lot of "cant wait to see you tonight" and "see you later." Until the very last one, "William" Was all it said. I quickly removed the sticky note and looked over what it said. Then almost just as quickly as I picked it up I flipped it over and stuck it under the rest of the papers. Pressing the buzzer I waited for Anna to respond, once she did I responded with"You need to take care of these." William: Twenty-five thousand, seventy-five hundred, eighty million, one hundred seventy-five, two...I counted, I thought it made the time go by so much quicker. Time, a thing I never knew I would ever take for granted, is not something I knew I had always taken for granted. Time was something I thought I would always have, but now, nothing except white. White, like the colors on the walls, white like the clothes that the people wear here, white like my thoughts. I shook my head, my hair that once was combed neatly now brushing down into my eyes. My eyes...I looked around, the walls were all white, so white I could hardly tell where the corners of the rooms were, I knew, I knew since the night I got here. I looked at each of the four corners of the room, one, two, three, four. The door in the middle of the right side, is it the right side? The left? I'm not sure anymore, I'm not sure of very much now. Thinking, I'm not allowed to think, do I even have time to think? Time...I narrow my eyes at the door, I think about trying to open it, knowing full well that if I did I would be electrocuted again. I had to wait, wait for something, for someone...Who, I wasn't sure. I sat against the wall, my head leaning back against it, and stared at the wall in front of me. I dared not to close my eyes, though I know if I did, this room would still be all that I saw. I heard a small click and the door opened. "Get up." a man said as he stepped into the room. I hesitated. "Get up." He repeated. I slowly got up and waited, "Let's go." He said, motioning for me to move. I didn't dare. Not only was I not sure of where I was, I didn't know who had me there. Was it my father? The authorities? I didn't do anything to break the law of our kind, if we even are a kind. "Let's go!" The man said a little bit harder. I drew in a deep breath then quickly moved toward the man who grabbed me by the arm and stuck handcuffs on me. He then grabbed my arm and started guiding me through the hallway.
