CHAPTER 1
What are you doing again? Kate asked her son Richard. I instructed you to stop drawing but you won't listen. This Passion of yours won't take you anywhere, you have to stop this nonsense because it's nothing but a waste of time. I can't drop this mum, it's my life and I love it, Richard answered. Kate looked at her son as tears flow down her cheeks. Ella walked in and assured her mother that this time it will be different. As she wiped the tears off her mother's face. Kate said, seeing Richard's drawing bring back unwanted memories that I don't like, she thought she had buried this nightmare. Richard continues with his artistry work, as he put the finishing touches on the image drawn. He picked the picture frame to go deliver it to his customer. He has a time target and he is running late. He board a vehicle but due to the heavy traffic he could not wait, he alighted from the bus and took a bike just to get to meet up on time. He arrived at the house, to meet the man on his way out. He apologized and promised to be on time the next time. Richard gave him the piece of art and counted the money, he discovered the money was not complete. This is way shorter than the agreement we both have, he replied and said this is just a pencil-drawn diagram put a frame and I'll give you your complete money, Richard was pissed off. The man drove off. Getting home, he saw the mother downcast, only to be told that the landlord has come to ask for his rent and he was like; "Oh not again". He has been saving money to engage in an art competition, yet he could not save up to $3000, and it's just 2 months left before the closure of the program. He already told Taylor, he would meet his role model Johnny Wilson, a talented and renowned painting artist. Richard was remembering all this as he gave his mother the savings. The savings is about 2,000 dollars, with tears in his eyes he watched as his mother handed over the money to the landlord. Ella followed her brother into the room. All through their time in the room, Richard was speechless and sober, Ella knows he could not meet up with the application fee again. It's my dream to meet Johnny Wilson he told his sister. This is not the lifestyle I planned for myself he said, as he locked his room after Ella left the room. He was not pleased with the lifestyle he is living, he wished he could live a luxurious lifestyle like what he watched on television. Richard decided to meet his friend, Taylor and they discussed the turn of events that has happened to Richard's dream. Taylor asked him to forget the past and pay attention to the present, nothing can change the past, just concentrate on the present because that is only what can change your story and bring your dream to reality. They both talked at length about high school and how they plan to keep up with the cost and lifestyle of college life. Getting home, he thought about his conversation with Taylor and decide to let the past be bygone. He thought of what to do to make his dream future a reality. To meet up with the cost of college, he decided he would take up menial jobs. He would combine this with his artwork. He remembered his late father's words, to achieve your dreams, you have to strive to make a difference in any sphere of life you find yourself. Hard work, dedication, and determination have to be your watchword and then the sky will be your starting point. He got home late from work and decided to take a rest on the couch. He switch on Television and saw the prestigious institution, Tiger's college with a jaw-breaking announcement. Tiger's College announced it will be giving out scholarship opportunities to those who could not afford to pay the huge tuition fee of the institution. Richard just laughed at the announcement because he knows the institution is not for his type. These people will just continue to deceive the people just to gain popularity, he said to himself. The following day he went to deliver a piece of art to a customer, he gave the man the framed picture and collected his money. As he turned to leave, his eyes went straight to the table and then he saw a newspaper. Tiger's College offers fully-funded scholarship opportunities, written boldly on the front page of the newspaper. He asked for permission if he could read the newspaper, and he was told to go ahead and read it. He read through it and concluded to give it a trial. He determines to partake in it and nothing will stop him from participating in the test this time. The scholarship covers the tuition fee, books, accommodation, and every other thing he will need all through his stay at the school. This also comes with the opportunity to participate in an annual artistic competition if he is admitted to the school. All these benefits make Tiger's College appealing to Richard, he would lay claim to this opportunity. He told Ella about the offer and said this is a one-time offer for me. He asked Ella to follow him to the school, so he could register. The next morning was not just like any day for Richard. A new day with the sun shining brightly, the freshness that comes as the air blow through his room window and he concluded, this is the day the Lord has made to change my story. The sun burned through the light fog hovering above the city, exposing, giant oaks, beautiful lakes, well-trimmed lawns, and a large array of granite and glass structures. The inhabitant of the city was already awake and buzzing in the early hours of the morning. Traffic jams were already beginning to form, and men and women were trotting happily, chit-chatting on their way to work. It was all calm. Richard was happy and Ella was glad about it, at least for once her brother found what gives him happiness. She prayed he is shortlisted, she whispered slowly to herself. They arrived at the institution and saw Tiger's College boldly written. The environment was serene, flowers, and structure were beautiful. Richard appreciated the architectural work. It was a huge masterpiece he told Ella, which she agreed to. Good Afternoon, Sir, Richard said to the security man at the gate. My name is Richard and here is my Sister Ella. Good Afternoon, and how are you doing? asked the security man. They both replied we are fine. We are here for the scholarship application form. We are told to come to the school to collect the form and fill in the necessary details, Richard said. They were both directed to the Administrative Office to apply and collect the form. What is your name? asked the secretary. My name is Richard Junior, he answered. How did you know about the scholarship opportunity program? Through the television and also on the front page of the National newspaper. I was able to read about the scholarship opportunity program in the newspaper. That's very thoughtful of you. The secretary gave him the form and requested $500. Richard was confused and asked, why the $500? and what will it be used for? The secretary said the $500 is to purchase the scholarship application form and to participate in the test. Richard looked more confused and asked, why is it not communicated to us on the television? Why didn't the newspaper also pass the information to the public? He inquired from the secretary. Looking at him with a straight face, she asked, are you ready or not? Disappointed Richard looked down as he head back to the gate. It then dawned on him that, this is real and without the $500 there was no way he could participate in the scholarship test. Is this the end of the road for me? Where will I see $500? How can I get admitted without writing the test? These are questions that were ringing in his heart with no answer.
