Chapter 3- A Spark of Purpose
Chapter 3: A Spark of Purpose
The silence in the cabin stretched out, heavy with the crackle of the hearth and the gravity of Justice’s words.
Blakely stared into the flames, her mind spinning. A princess. Royal blood. The target of a dark king. Every weird thing about her life—the plants thriving under her touch, the stray animals following her, the sudden, terrifying magic in the woods—snapped into place like pieces of a cosmic puzzle.
For a brief second, panic threatened to swallow her whole. She wanted her bedroom, her old routine, her simple, ordinary human life.
Then she thought of the iron-clad hunters, the cold menace in their glowing eyes, and the violence that had just invaded her world. Running away wouldn't make her safe. Hiding in the human realm was no longer an option.
Blakely took a slow, deep breath, squared her shoulders, and looked up. The fear in her eyes was replaced by a sudden, fierce spark of determination.
She stood up from the armchair, stepping right up to Justice so he couldn't look away.
"So," Blakely said, her voice steady and ringing with newfound strength. "I'm the lost heir. Which means the Dark King knows I'm still alive because of what happened back in the woods."
Justice raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her quick recovery and steel-spined resolve. "The second you manifested that light and those vines, your signature echoed across the veil. The Unseelie Court knows you've awakened."
"Then sitting around waiting for them to find us is a death sentence," Blakely said, crossing her arms. "I'm not hiding, Justice. I want to know what we need to do next. How do we keep me safe, and more importantly... how do we stop the Dark King?"
A slow, genuine smile broke through Justice's brooding expression—a look that made his striking gray eyes soften.
"Well," Justice murmured, a note of respect creeping into his voice. "For a human-raised girl, you adapt fast, Your Highness."
"Don't call me that yet," Blakely shot back, though a faint blush warmed her cheeks. "Just Blakely. Now, are you going to help me or not?"
Justice chuckled, turning toward a large, intricate map laid out on a heavy oak table in the center of the room. He beckoned for her to come closer.
"Help you? Blakely, I've spent the last three years tracking down remnants of the royal guard, looking for a way to fight back," Justice said, tracing his finger along a winding river on the map. "You just gave us our missing piece. But if we want to survive long enough to challenge the Dark King, we can't do it alone."
"What do we need?" Blakely asked, leaning over the table.
"Three things," Justice said, looking up to meet her gaze. "First, training. You have royal magic, but right now, it's a wild fire. You need to learn how to control it. Second, allies. We need to find the underground loyalists hiding in the Silver Mountains. And third..." He paused, his expression turning grim. "...we need to find the Sunstone amulet, the only relic capable of breaking the Dark King's throne protection."
Blakely looked at the map, then back to the fierce, steady rogue standing beside her. The road ahead looked dangerous, impossible even—but for the first time in her life, she felt like she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
